Bury vs Burnley, League Cup first round, 1985/86

Evening Clarets. A bit of a long shot, but can anyone remember who scored for Burnley in their 2-1 win in the first leg and their 3 goals in the 5-3 defeat at Bury in the second? And what was the pattern of the goal scoring in the second leg? Did it go to extra time? Thanks in advance for any help.

And the Taylor is Alan Taylor who moved to Bury at the end of that season.

Also the night that the Bury manager brought himself on as a sub and received an incredible reception from the Burnley fans. A certain Dobbo.

Was it Dobbo who asked you? He’s someone I have so much time for. I’ve said it many times and never tire of saying it but no one at our club has ever shown me more respect than Dobbo.

Craig Madden he was a decent striker at that level as I remember. Remember how odd it was to see Dobbo come on, and especially not for us.

I remember the away game at Gigg Lane as our chances were dented almost immediately with Wayne Biggins slipping on the touch line in front of us trying to keep a ball in play and pulling up injured, without him it was going to be a very tall order.
We went to Bury very often around that time cause of the Burnley connection and especially Dobbo in charge and Frank Casper as his assistant, luckily we tended to be away when Bury were at home.
I think (could be getting the years mixed up) Bury went on to play Manchester City and I was on both legs of the tie with the Bury home game being played at Old Trafford.
Trevor Ross was a hard nut at full back and he had a real shot on him, he loved nothing better than smacking a free kick (and penalties) with everything he had.

Bury did indeed go on to play City in the second round, with a whisper over 11,000 at OT presumably looking a bit lost in a ground like that. Still more than Bury could get into Gigg though after the capacity had been cut to 8,000 in the immediate aftermath of Bradford.

James have you watched any of the games played by Bury AFC, I believe they are playing in the NWCL?
I saw that Gigg Lane has been put up for sale, any hope that it might be bought and used again for football or have housing developers got their eyes on it?

I was lucky enough to attend a few AFC games which took place under restrictions last season, yeah. I really enjoyed them, though the split in the fanbase between AFC supporters and those who think the original club can be saved rumbles on. I think AFC have been in contact with the council about the feasibility of using Gigg in the future but it's still such a complex situation.
As for Trevor Ross's shot as mentioned above, this picture of him scoring a penalty against Blackpool in March 1985 is one of my favourites in the book.

It’s a shame about the split when everyone should be pulling in the same direction.

Yeah, I don’t think they were all that pleased at Leighton James going to ground a bit too easily to win the penalty too. The Bury Times coverage of what was comfortably the worst hooliganism ever seen at Gigg was brilliant.

A few familiar names floating around there. Bury's Lee Dixon, his sister used to come to Mummy toddler groups at my house. And for Burnley - Kevin Hird - teaches at my step daughter's school and his son Sam is my plastering partner....excellent plasterer and fantastic musician, here's him and his ex now Hannah performing, definitely worth a couple of minutes of your time..

Interesting about Hirdy’s son being a musician. I was told Kevin Hird himself was a brilliant classical guitarist.

Yes I've heard that about Kevin. Sam is multi instrumental, he was considered a prodigy. He's also a fine football player and he has in common with his father ridiculously small size 6 feet.

Never gave up on Burnley, but we did go to Gigg lane a few times during their promotion season, including Hartlepool away as we lived in the North East. Just to see how Dobbo was doing as Player Manager. Really enjoyed it unlike our sad demise to the 4th Division.

We went to Gigg Lane two or three times when we didn't have a game. It was like watching the ex-Clarets at times with Frank Casper on the touchline alongside Dobbo and then goodness knows how many former Burnley players in their team.
