2 years is maybe a bit of a surprise but it's fine, really. Nowt to get too excited or upset about.

I've just added Jay's quotes.
I have only spoken to him once since he came back and that was the week after he'd scored his worldy at Old Trafford. He told me then about the togetherness in the dressing room and how easy it was to come into it because everyone was a decent, down to earth lad. Over two years on, he's said the same thing.

Wasn’t going to renew with Dyche still here. He’s one of the OOC I would have wanted to keep regardless of league.

Guess it all depends on the T&Cs of the contract. If he’s still on the reported £50,000 a week he’s currently on I’m not so excited, but if on a much lower wage can see why they’ve done it.

Seems a strange move from the club. This season was definitely the time to part company with him.
This looks like a Dale Stephens type move from the club.

Last time he was in the Championship he scored 22 goals. If worst comes to worst, we have a proven player at that level. If we manage to stay up, he’s a useful player to have in the squad.
I’m surprised at two years personally, but one would assume it’s on vastly different terms to those which he initially re-signed for us on.

With Barnes and Vydra likely to move on, I don't mind Jay staying as a squad man. Not sure it was realistic those who were expecting us to replace 3 strikers this summer.

Odd comment. Decent squad player. We’re losing Vydra and likely Barnes. Surely we can’t lose 3 strikers on a free, no chance we can replace that with our limited funds?

Good news. He’s got a good mix to his game in that he can compete in the air, link play and create space. Though his goals have dried up in the prem I do think if we do go down Jay would score goals at champ level due to his intelligent movement. If we don’t go down then we know we are getting honesty, hard work and commitment to the cause.

I was under the impression Barnes was staying?
Plus Cornet has played up top a lot. Just seems a strange move. He’s scored 3 goals in over the last two seasons.

Personally I'd be surprised and a bit disappointed if we offered Barnes a new deal. You'd think our next manager would like plenty of freedom to refresh the squad.
EDIT- unless there's a 12 month option that has been triggered?

Absolutely not, you build a squad around players like Jay, Bardsley etc.
He’s worth every penny.

According to CT's list of players there is an option for a further year in Ashley Barnes' contract. Not sure if it is in the Club's favour or his.

We can’t let 3 strikers go in summer, so one of vydra, Rodriguez and Barnes was always going to get an extension and maybe another will. Can see Vydra being offered a deal but maybe he’ll want to go..?
Jay is a goodun to keep as he’s a decent player and a fan favourite.

I’d hope now Jay has renewed, Barnes renewal waits until a new manager is in and whether he suits their system. For example, Knutsen plays a 4-3-3 which would not suit Barnes but Kompany plays 4-4-2 which still would.

Makes sense. Need to find the right balance in the number of out of contract players who are retained and that will also be influenced by what league we are playing in.

That’s a fair comment. I might be wrong but I swear I read somewhere a while back that Barnes had an option of another year.
Out of of the three of them I would prefer Vydra stays.
I’m happy jays got a deal for him personally but think for the club it’s a poor move. He’s been below average for at least two seasons already.

Happy enough with that
Looked much more like himself recently, and lets hope he can find the goals
Not too impressed with the Barnes staying it has to be said (though looked back to the Barnes of old in the last two games)

That's what the club reported and I was told that it was triggered based on a set number of appearances. Not sure whether that includes any cup appearances though.

Well I’m pleased, I thought he was USA bound so I’m guessing SD’s leaving has perhaps led to a change of heart.

I'd heard that rumour, also a rumour that he'd agreed a deal with a current Championship club, but I think that's all they ever were.

Agree re. Vydra but it seems there’s quite a lot of interest in him in England and overseas. Perhaps how underused he’s been over the years with Dyche has made his mind up already.

I've not really commented but I'm really pleased with this news. I think he offers a lot at Premier League level and if we did go down then he'd be an outstanding player for us in the Championship.

I’m not against Jay getting two more years - it buys us time to find a replacement and he’ll be a useful squad member over that period. Quite what we will need up front (I’d have thought at least one) will very much depend on keeping Weghorst and Cornet and also, how we are going to line up, next season.
Cornet is the big conundrum - I’m still unsure what his best position is! Assuming he stays, I’d expect to see much more from him next year after a full pre season.
He’s been red hot or stone cold in his time with us so far, although more recently I’ve seen a few signs of him hitting a bit of the middle ground. He’ll be far more useful if he’s regularly turning in 7/10 performances than a few 5’s and followed by a 10.

Love Jay, he is one of our own, but I'm surprised by this. He has flashes of his old self, but not often enough to get another 2 years. I just can't see him being better in 12 months or 24 months time, and we need someone who will be better.
I'm pleased for him, but we need new blood, younger blood, and this inhibits us moving forward.

Always loved Jay , but 50k a week seems a bit much for a player who's 33 in July . I'm sure he can still "cut it" in the championship but not sure about the Premier .

Decent Championship player but you’d like to think he would be bit part if we stay up. His goal scoring record recently is abysmal(discounting 4 vs Rochdale)

He may have a more settled position with a new manager.
I think ACON took a bit out of him, along with niggling injuries as he's had to adapt to a faster, rougher league etc.
I agree about a general lack of middle ground with him

Just what I was thinking. Would be a waste of money if a new manager was to come in and decide Jay (or anyone else signing a new deal before the appointment) isn't part of his plans.
