Tony. Did he play just one game less than
Remco Van Der shafted?

Was there a reason for this?

He is the kind of signing I tend to think of when you see the clamour to sign someone from abroad simply because it is someone from abroad.

And not many have come close to being successful

Marco Gentile didn’t have much of a playing career it seems, and retired as a player in 2001. Coaching and various managing roles since, currently assistant manager of Dutch second tier club Excelsior Rotterdam.
That’s unless the various sites I’ve just looked at are lying!!!

To be fair, according to Wiki, he'd clocked up over 200 apps in his home country before coming to Burnley when he was 28, for whatever reason that didn't work out. He retired around the age of 32 after going back to Holland and playing for another three years.

He was the best man-marker in Dutch football, according to Marco Van Basten. At least, I seem to remember reading that back in 1997. I remember being really excited by his signing.

I seem to remember reading that he was paid a significant amount per game played so that may be one reason he never really featured.

Good interview with him from a few years back.

just a suggestion CT, but instead of ARTICLE: as a prefix for old articles, perhaps you could use ARCHIVE: instead. So we can differentiate between what is an archive article and what is and could be news about the club. I know for this one its quite clear that Heath isn't manager, but as a first glance across the forum the "capture of Dutch defender" does stand out.

Good article though, thanks

Interesting read. This shows he has an interest in us. Or he did a few years ago.

I’m sure I read that once although I’m not sure it was the case.

Our record with Dutchmen isn't great, is it?

No is the simple answer but I do wish Erik Pieters hadn't got injured

We never got to know how good or bad he was, but when the likes of Blatherwick, Moore, Winstanley and Howey are being picked in preference to you.......

Interesting to read that he went on to play Champions League football after leaving us. I refuse to believe he could have been any worse than some of the players Waddle signed and played that year.
