Way back in the 1972/73 season we set off on a season with high hopes ..older wise players like Keith Newton etc...and young hungry players like Leighton James Paul fletcher etc alongside Martin dobson ..a genuine great .....we won promotion to the old 1st division playing scintillating football ....hope history repeats itself ๐Ÿคž

Not sure it was 'high hopes'. We 'd finished the previous season with 6 straight wins but despite this the attendance for the first game at home to Carlisle was four figures and we just managed to scrape a draw. The next home game v Villa offered up a little more optimism though.

The plan was to cover this season on the 50th anniversary but I brought it forward two years because I couldnโ€™t get to the library to research the alternative feature.

Certainly was a cracking season, we could only have used about sixteen players as well. Still rankles that in four years, we'd dismantled that side and had a thirty three year wait for a place at the top table.

I have a feeling we only used 14 players.

I always thought the Villa home game was much later in the season. When it was obvious we were both challenging for promotion.
Was that not also the game Brian Miller played how far can you chuck a Villa fan into the stand.

I know it was a while ago but itโ€™s a shame that such a big game doesnโ€™t appear to have had any match footage recorded by anyone.

I had a look on YouTube, but could only find some rough home cinecam type footage with no real match action.

We and QPR were the outstanding teams that year, both full of top quality players, and both went on to have excellent first seasons in the First Division. Completely different times though.

If you are referring to that Villa home game, then decent highlights are - or at least were - available on YT.

I was 13 and I think lean on me was the summer hit, along with the worst but most sung song ''my ding a ling'' playing football at the field back of tilitsons of manchester road, going to my Grans on a saturday doing jobs for her hetting lunch then at 1:15 would walk from her home on a street where halfords is to the turf so as to be able to get in at 1;30 when the gates opened

only used 14 players all season! ;)

โ€ฆincluding Dave Thomas (who scored 4 goals for Clarets), then transferred to QPR.
He won both a Championship winners medal for us and runner-up medal for QPR - a unique achievement!

What a terrific season! 8-)

Villa away was on New Year's Day and we won that one 0-3. Real belief after that. Played Liverpool at home the following week in the F A Cup and earned a replay with a 0-0 draw.

Here you go.

It was such a great performance. 4 terrific goals and all different. They had just come up as champions and were well fancied to go straight through. We saved our best for them home and away.
Andy Lochhead getting the assist for their equaliser. With his head of course.

I trust your memory better than my own.

I might be confusing it with the cup game, didn't we play them at home on the way to Hillsborough 74.

The 3-0 win at Villa was on 6th January

In 60 years of watching us, this season and the next are probably my favourites. Watched through the eyes of a 17/18 year old though! Myself and 3 mates had the great pleasure of spending an afternoon in the company of Colin Waldron last summer. They say you should never meet your heroes but Waldo is an exception. Great bloke with some fascinating tales to tell!

Off to university that September. As a reward my parents took me to the evening home game against Preston a couple of weeks after the Villa game. Won 2-0 to move towards the top of the league, a position we maintained to the end. A memorable season from my all time favourite Burnley side.

You are right. We played Villa at home in the 5th round of that cup run. A 1-0 win saw us through to a last eight meeting with Wrexham.

1972-73 was my favourite season, probably due to the fact I was only 18/19.

We played Pompey at home late on that season, a 4-0 win. Pompey made Ray captain for the game. My favourite all time Claret.

And the majestic Keith Newton. Wonderful.

There are a lot of old farts on here.

My first home game was against Sunderland and the queues to get in were enormous.

In my memory, it was a 2-2 draw but looking at the site CT has posted it was a 2-0 win.

I was -20 at the time and wasn't the fully formed dinosaur I am now.

That didn't happen for another 40 years when I was 20....!

I know the youngsters on here will spend the next 15 minutes pondering how (-20 )+ 40 = 20 but I can assure you back in the day there was such a thing as universal truths like Mathematics...!

And if there wasn't how else would I be 27 now?

You went to your first game aged -20. That's some achievement. Mine was about minus three months I'm told, at Gillingham around 1953. I don't remember who they played or what the score was but I probably did some kicking.
