Unfortunately another RIP thread for an ex-great of European football.

It's being reported in German press that (the original) Uwe Seeler has passed away aged 85
According to this coverage- 404 goals in 476 games at club level (1953-72) and 3 times player of the year in Germany.

If my memory serves - he played in the 1966 WC Final and v BFC in the 1961 European Cup.

Was captain of that Hamburg side I think and definitelyn captained West Germany. Wonderful, wonderful player.

Scored twice against us in the second leg of the European Cup tie in Germany in 1960/61.

Astonishing goalscoring record

404 for Hamburg in 476 games and 43 for West Germany in 72 games.

As dougcollins said, a brilliant header of the ball but he was tiny at 5ft 7ins.

We'd won the first leg on the Turf 3-1 in January of 1961, but remarkably had to wait some two months or more before the second leg in Hamburg in March. I recall his two goals all too vividly as we departed the competition.

Exactly eight weeks between the games and Pilky, having scored twice in the first leg, had been sold before we played the second leg.

Just a great club and international centre forward. I've banged on a bit on here in the past about the brilliance of Jimmy Greaves but Uwe Seeler's record is also astonishing and incredible. Isn't it strange how players that 'have done for us in the past' can retain a level of appreciation and admiration.His brother, Dieter Seeler, was in the Hamburg team we played in 1961.RIP Uwe Seeler.

I too was there. Two of the most exciting matches ever at the Turf. And two of the best performances ever by the Clarets. Seeler and Kopa (Rheims) were two of the best strikers in Europe at the time.

I have to admit that I didnt realize how highly he was esteemed as a person (as well as a football player) in Germany but the "uns Uwe" (OUR Uwe) really emphasises that aspect & is being widely used in German press coverage this afternoon (not just in Hamburg).

Doesn't show it on the footage, but didn't Jimmy Mac hit the post in the away leg?

Or am i mixing up my European games.

Did he play in the first leg at the Turf? Was at the game but can’t remember if he played. Great player RIP

And rightly so. You think back and realise what a privilege it was to see such world class players on the Turf.

The home game v Hamburg wouldn't have gone ahead now. The night before Hamburg practised on a frozen pitch only to turn up the following night and see a quagmire after a sudden thaw overnight. Of course it was considered normal back then and as already alluded to Burnley fans were able to view first hand the likes of Uwe Seeler and Charlie Doerfel for Hamburg. As for Reums they had a star studded forward line but I don't think the great Juste Fontaine played in the first leg. Pity they were reliant on Kopa, Piantoni and Gene Vincent.

I was another who saw Seeler play at the Turf and also in the 66 World Cup Final.
Hamburgs posts were square and the only other ground I can recall seeing them at the time was Hampden Park. My recollection was MCs shot hitting the goalies bottom left side post. Although Seeler was small in size, he was built like Francis Lee of Man City. During our away leg, he did a lot of overhead kicks, which made it awkward for Brian Miller to defend.
I was on Brian’s testimonial committee and a fellow Claret had a German business contact in Hamburg, who was friend of Uwe. I asked if he would mention to his contact, that Brian was having a testimonial and would he see if Uwe would pen a letter, to be read out at the main event dinner, which he gladly did.

I saw him play v USSR at Goodison in the 1966 World Cup Semi final a great player.

Sad news. Remember chanting "Uwe, Uwe" at our own Peter Noble who was given this nickname on account (I think)of both heading ability and baldness.

He spoke well of his visit to Burnley even though they lost on a mud heap).

Has anybody got a copy of the photo (taken by Richard Moore?? A freelance photographer) prior to the home leg against Hamburg.

Evidently the Hamburg team had checked in at the Keirby hotel and had a stroll down Yorkshire St to check out the Turf. On the return walk he was to join in an impromptu footy game with a couple of Burnley urchins. Moore was lucky enough to capture the moment with his photo receiving widespread acclaim.

HSV legend Uwe Seeler is dead. The former player (1953-1972) and president (1995-1998) of Hamburger SV died at the age of 85 surrounded by his family. Uwe Seeler is survived by his wife Ilka as well as three daughters and seven grandchildren.

"Uwe Seeler stands for everything that characterises a good person: Down-to-earthness, loyalty, joie de vivre, plus he was always approachable. He is the epitome of HSV. I personally have special memories of our get-together on his last birthday. He talked shop, asked about his HSV, gave me tips and a few sayings. We will never forget him and will always cherish him. Now our thoughts and sympathy go out to Uwe's family, to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences," says HSV board member Jonas Boldt.

With Uwe Seeler, HSV has lost the greatest sportsman in its club history. Seeler was registered with HSV on 1 April 1946 by his father Erwin with membership number 1725 and went on to become one of the best centre-forwards in the world. In 587 competitive games for the Rothosen, he scored a whopping 507 goals, making him the club's undisputed record goalscorer to this day. With HSV, the long-time captain won nine consecutive Oberliga-Nord championships (1955-1963) as well as one German championship (1960) and one DFB Cup (1963). Seeler also played 72 international matches (43 goals) for the German national team, captained it 40 times and in 1972 became the second player ever to be named honorary captain of the DFB team.

It was not only Seeler's sporting successes and records that were unparalleled, but above all his down-to-earth, fair and loyal manner that earned the Hamburg-born player a reputation as an absolute man of honour and coined the phrase: "I'm no better than anyone else, I'm just a normal person. I just played football." In 2003, Seeler was made an honorary citizen of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Our deepest sympathy goes to the family and all friends of "Us Uwe" Seeler.
