Positives from last night…

:D Couldn’t resist a thread…

Few alternatives to the obvious ones already discussed:

- Team spirit was still there. I didn’t know how that would fare given all the changes but VK seems to be true to his word and building on that.

- Work rate was outstanding. Football aside, these lads grafted and we’ll need that to continue.

- Reception has been unreal. I was having a look online after and not just in the UK but abroad the compliments were flowing. A lot more people will tune in to our games this year.

- Style-wise, hopefully it convinces the players we want to join.

Sorry, two more to add:

- Subs well used, I thought. I don’t like too many changes. Looking forward to better use of the squad this year but not to the excess. Thought the subs he made were at the right time & didn’t disrupt the game.

- Clean sheet. Hardly any chances conceded. Something for the defence to build on.

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere but looking to take quick free kicks (although they didn't quite come off) was refreshing.

Love the thread 😀 ignoring the performance I loved Kompany’s interview afterwards. Not bothered about style of play but will try and keep the ball so we can effect the game all about hard work. Gonna be some ride from now until the end of the season it won’t all go well but I think we are back to being the hardest working side.

A few people have mentioned Udders were bad but 100% the majority of that was down how we pressed and harassed them.

All the "old" players fitted perfectly into the new system - giving us experience along the spine of the team

The fans in the away end matched the amazing performance on the pitch. Best away day since Watford last season 🤣

Another point to add on this, I saw some quick long balls up as well. Mainly by the senior players actually. Old habits die hard & all that.

But I want a mix. I like the passing it around but like to mix it up with some long balls forward to get attacks going.

Considering the work ethic and press were always seen as 2 of the main cornerstones in the Dyche system, I thought we looked fitter than last season and "hunted in packs" very effectively last night. (Albeit against poorer opposition than last season).
If we can maintain that level of work rate and that style of football were in for a very good season.

Mobility and fluidity the two biggest positives from last night.

Absolutely loved it last night. I was Dyches biggest fan but that was as refreshing performance as I could have wished for.

Cullen and Maatsen look absolutely amazing but the overall quality was fantastic. Over 500 passes. In one game. I think we waited 20 games for that stat last season ;) :)

The main positive for me was that we looked far better than was ever expecting. Incredible considering the short amount of time the team have had to gel.

Definitely. There is still room for a quick forward ball. Barnes ran the channels well for that quick outlet. Get a pacier striker in and we will get a few more "direct" goals too. I'm still blown away by how good that first half was.

Charlie Taylor at LCB. Never any concerns and always look comfortable. Almost as if he’s made for the role there

One positive for me is thinking about how we could be playing in a couple of months time when this system has properly bedded in.

Reminiscent of when Ben Mee moved to centre half, that worked quite well also😀

I was fearing the worst a bit beforehand. To be that cohesive with very little preparation and some players literally arriving just before the match was quite an achievement.

Of course, Huddersfield may prove to be absolutely bobbins and it’s not much of a barometer but still a very enjoyable watch.

Watched it this morning and thought they were fantastic. It was a weight off my mind to be honest as I had no idea what we were going to look like. A good start to build on.

Positives... It's still shorts and T-Shirt weather, even for a night game.

1 nice thing to hear as I left the ground was 2 Huddersfield talking and they said
"Sometimes you've just got to hold your hands up, they were better than us all over the pitch, they were excellent"

Not heard that from opposition fans, makes a change from the usual sour grapes, it made me smile thats for sure.

I will be absolutely over the moon if we play that kind of football mixed in with some more direct play at the right times. I’m loving the new style but also enjoy moving possession to attack very quickly.

Also thought Muric balanced it well with playing it out from the back and going long.

Clean sheet.
Debut for Costelloe.
Surprisingly cohesive given the number of debutants.
Maatsen opening his account, he looks like he'll provide plenty of threat down the left this season.
Cullen looks a class act.
Good use of subs when Hudds where threatening to creep back into the game.
Twine will be a threat from set-pieces, something we've lacked for a long time.
An away win on the board already.

I'd fallen out of love watching Burnley based on the past couple of seasons. It was in the main a tough watch and that is no direct criticism of Dyche more a reflection of the situation we were in. The fact it was Prem football was no consolation to me.

Based on last night and if we can keep up that standard, the bug will very much be back.

I was impressed with many all the debutants but I was delighted to see Josh Brownhill have such an impact on the game. Full of energy and product and looked to be enjoying his football so much. If he carries on like this he will be a big factor in our season.

Ben Mee came on to replace David Edgar for his Burnley debut. He was always a CB, he was played out of position at LB

Cohesiveness, fluidity across the park and hard work (on and off the ball). I can see why VK decided to play one pre season game in front of spectators. This performance came from the collective efforts of everyone on the training pitch. A word for Maatsen and Cullen, they stood out for me. A very good first impression, a marker has been set for the rest of the season.

That performance was a breath of fresh air, even though I doubt we will witness a performance as poor as Huddersfield 1st half and we have to be honest because they were abysmal

One could put forward that it might have been that we were excellent in the first half or a combination of factors, rather than it just being a case of Huddersfield being abysmal.

Been there and got the t shirt to prove it. A perfect example is our 1st game of the season in 1982 at Ayresome Park when we beat Boro 4-1. We went on to get relegated that season and I was once again there at Palace on that awful night in South London.

We all need to calm down and take things into prospective and realise that this is only our 1st game of the season

I'm not sure what 1982, or the rest of what you say above, has got to do with the point I was making which was clearly specific to last night's game and not how the season may or may not play out.

The quality of lyrical adaptation to popular music tunes performed acapella to a live audience for the first time to herald players of the club that have arrived just a few weeks ago and in one case just days ago was a sound to behold. I reckon some of those responsible have been having private sessions with Paul McCartney during the summer.

82/3 completely different. We made no additions to the squad (or indeed deletions). Some good young players certainly but key weaknesses among the older players which were cruelly exposed. We started well because of the promotion momentum but had a terrible run after the first three games.
And the first game against Bolton (Phil Ray’s one and only!) was actually pretty awful if truth were told.

The new signings all look superb and have settled in amazingly
Costello looks an absolutely class act.
The realisation that VK is going to amazing for Burnley as is belamy
Loving football again.

The premier league is a vicious circle for me. Will be wanting to win this league to go up but then hating it once there. Who knows though under VK, it might be different up there next time. For the last 7 or so years though its been awful on the whole.

Couldn't stop smiling last night. Absolutely superb

Were you at the Bolton home game before Middlesbrough? We drew 0-0. It was turgid.

Individual positives:
-Bastien in the first half looked quality, N'golo Kante meets Mason Mount. Faded second half but really impressed me in the first.
-Cullen looks like the perfect unfashionable centre midfielder. I almost wasn't noticing him at times, then I'd check the stats and he was everywhere. Can see why Kompany wanted him, he ticks us over like Jones used to do but with Marney's graft and bite. He'll be a good one.
-Maatsen is electric and I just wish we had him on a permanent deal. He was more a winger than a fullback, really impressed.
-Costelloe didn't have the best night in front of goal, he should have scored 2 and was clumsy with a couple layoffs in the final third- but this is all pressure scenario stuff. For a 19 year old making his debut, he was not shy of the ball at all, happy to get involved, moved well, and had moments of promise. I expect him to go to the bench when Jay or Twine are fit (Or ideally, Cornet comes back in as that role is made for him) but with further involvements he'll hopefully grow in confidence and composure and the end product will come.
-Taylor did far better than I expected as LCB. Still don't think it's his natural role and he will struggle against teams that can get into our area more, especially physical sides, but he did well.
-Barnes didn't look likely to score but looked brighter than he has in over 2 years. His dummy for the goal really surprised me, maybe he still has more in the tank than I thought.

Team positives:
-The pressing and energy we had under Dyche from 2015-18 was well and truly back. Back then we looked like a wolf pack, unbelievably organised and hard-pressing. That was in display again, and it's been long missed.
-Kompany was proactive in his subs and on a more personal level made the exact subs I wanted to see at the exact time I wanted, it regained momentum as I hoped, Dyche was hesitant with subs but at least the first few years, when he made them it again would be the exact change I'd want to see and this persisted a little (I was screaming for 433 with Vydra vs Chelsea last year, it worked). Can't help but take a bit of satisfaction when the change you want to see happens and pays off, and good to see that Kompany is starting off positively in his substitute approach even if that bench was thin on attacking options.
-We look far more on speed with this system than I ever expected. I went into the game genuinely fearing a 3-0 loss between our lineup, inexperience of the players, unfamiliarity with each other and the system, and instead we should have had a 3-0 win. Teams won't be caught offguard as much going forwards but if we can get even more comfortable with the system, I hope that doesn't matter.

The biggest thing for me was the way the defence and midfield held the ball and passed it off when under pressure. Last season it would have been hoofed forward and possession given away.

Now the opening round of fixtures has concluded, Burnley were the only side to take all 3 points on the road.
