Waddle's sides were a pushover.

We lacked every basic quality to win a game of football for much of the season.

I got the feeling City were told to take their foot off the gas after the third goal so as not to embarrass their hosts.

Wasn't Bradbury dubbed the South Coast Shearer?

I saw Eddie Large walking up Brunshaw Road after the match.

He was in the army when his sergeant recommended him to Portsmouth. Also took over as Bournemouth manager when Howe came to Burnley.

Quite a big crowd for a pre season game at the Turf. I don't remember many bigger?

Plenty there from City.
CFS was pretty much full if I recall correctly.

It was a stifling hot day- Wellington too hot and sweaty went to the Cricket club for some fresh air. Good turn out if Clarets due to the Waddle factor- still thinking he would take us back to the top, especially after a spate of quick signings on arrival.
City brought a good following as usual- max 2,000 who were very vocal throughout the game. Not surprising really given the ease of their win.
It was probably the first sign of how the season was going to pan out with the Waddle management team.

Didn't City end up getting relegated that season, and Bradbury turned out to be a disaster? We made them look brilliant that afternoon

Yeah they did, I think it was also the season that both Crewe and Stockport beat them as well as finishing above them

Hard to believe with that squad but they did go down with Stoke and Reading while Stockport finished 8th, Crewe 11th and Bury 17th. Frank Clark was replaced by Joe Royle as manager in Feb that season. Players such as Kinkladze and Rösler left at the end of the season. They went on to play league games against Macclesfield in the following season.

I mean we've signed some amazing players, and they've smashed us. I'm off to the bookies to back both teams to win their leagues.

There was some story that they called Bradbury No R's - or something like that, cos if you took the R's out of his name he became Lee Badbuy

They did - always known as Badbuy at City - wish I'd remembered that for the article.

I remember this game being on the infamous ‘Live TV’ channel on NYNEX cable TV. I’d been playing cricket for Burnley 3rds somewhere and came back to the club and watched the remaining minutes on the TV.

And us - 2-2 away and 0-6 at home :(

He was certainly universally known as “ Lee Bad-buy” by Citeh fans . I think he ended up at Bournemouth

That game should have signalled all wasn't well at TM, little did we know just how bad our fortunes would become as the weeks progressed.

It must be incredible for younger fans to believe Man City played in the 3rd tier relatively recently, but indeed they did, and they only just squeezed through the play-offs by the skin of their teeth.

However as CT alludes to in his article even in those days it was the haves and have nots regarding both clubs financially.

He played for another nine clubs after City and finished at Bournemouth. His last game for them was Eddie Howe's last as manager in his first spell after which Bradbury became manager.

Lost 1-0 at Macclesfield that season I think.

Not wishing to spoil a good story but they beat Macc 2-0 at home and beat them 1-0 away. Shaun Goater and Gareth Taylor scored at Maine Road and Goater again at Moss Rose.

I thought this was referring to the 1-6 debacle at home in 2010, and was puzzled as to why it was worthy of an article in August 2022, but it turns out being well beaten inside the first 15 minutes at home to Man City isn't that uncommon!

We played City in a pre season a couple of years before this. My bar was very quiet when in walked Eddie Large. There were only the 2 of us in there for a good half hour and I had a real good chat with him, mostly about football, City, Burnley links. He didn't know we signed Dennis Tueart, who I also saw take 3 penalties in a 0-0 in 1976. I found him to be a genuinely nice bloke, no airs and graces. The only time he did a bit was when Malcolm the accountant walked in who wore large glasses and was very slim, so of course Eddie said steps back in amazement, its Supersonic.

Of course, I meant more like why would you write an article of the 1-6 home defeat under Laws in (march?) 2010 in August 2022, which you haven't, but I thought that's what the headline was referring to, because it's the first 'early Manchester City onslaught' that came to mind.

With you now - and then there was the 6-0 defeat under Stan too in 1998/99

The Stan one was awful - It was funny because as the 6th goal went in my dad got up to leave, which never happened before (or since), so I followed him, and we just stood on the landing of one of the bob lord stairs still watching the game. Seemed pointless to 14 year old me.
I forget which came first, City 6 or Bob Taylor 5, but they seemed to be in the same week (City midweek?) and then I think we hammered Preston 3-0 on Sky?

Some of that is bound to be at least half true.

Bob Taylor 5 came first. They were actually ten days apart but we didn't have a game between them.

Bit of a gap between the two hammerings, we were due to play Wigan away but was called off I think.

We lost 1-0 to Preston just after.

It was two weeks later against Macclesfield on a Sunday when things looked doomed but we turned the season around after that.
Or during that I should have said.

We lost 1-0 to Preston shortly after. Didn't a certain Kurt Nogan score a worldy?

Maybe we hammered Preston 3-0 after being done over by Blackburn and Bolton in the early 2000's.
It definitely happened. I'm almost certain that I'm 99% positive that I think it happened, at least.

We beat Preston 3-0 at home on the Friday after the Sunday when things didn't go to plan at Ewood.

I'm not sure about that but it was another disastrous away day - we'd conceded 7 at Spurs too and there was a 6 and a couple of 5s that season.

Enjoying these trips down memory lane even if they aren’t the most pleasant.

Richard Huxford seemed to feature a lot in this pre-season but don’t recall him playing for us in the league?

Huxford was Heath's replacement for Parkinson - think it's fair to say he didn't have a long Burnley career.
