I don’t actually remember him but I must have seen him play as I was at the Chelsea and Man U games. He certainly had a long career in football and being national coach in Libya must have been an interesting experience.
Rest In Peace Dave and thanks for all you did for football.

Very sad news, RIP David.
Always tough for him in his early days behind the likes of Jock Aird and Harold Rudman and later, of course, John Angus. He was very popular among both the players and supporters and always found time after training to sign the autograph books of us youngsters.
He was versatile too, in that he was comfortable in either full-back position and it's ironic that in the season prior to the Championship win he virtually made the left-back position his own. Then along came Alex Elder and the rest is history.
Always known as David whilst he was here and I know he treasured that one and only goal he scored for us against Everton at the start of the 1956/57 season. A really good bloke and badly missed when he left.
RIP David.

A throw back to my early seasons watching the Clarets. He certainly had bad luck with his injuries, however, he did well to remain in the game he loved for many years.
RIP Dave Smith.

A loyal reserve just before my time 1959, 5 broken legs is an amazing, unlucky experience. He must have had some fortitude to come back from these. RIP

RIP David Smith
Was an excellent full back and saw him play several times including the 4-4 draw with Chelsea when we made 10 changes due to European Cup game and FA Cup game sandwich around it.
Thanks for the excellent post Tony with all the details of his career as player then coach and then Manager , most of which is news to me.
Condolences to his his family and friends

He certainly did one on us in the home game v Southend in 81/82. They ran riot and it could have been worse than the 3-5 it ended up even though they went down to ten men before half time. At least we got our own back a few weeks later in the game that mattered. Always seemed like a decent lad.

A few years back l managed to buy his 'contract' Dated 12th June 158 Starting salary £17. Signed on behalf of the club by Henry Smith in the presence of Harry Potts. Interesting read.
