Good article as usual. Didn't recall that their goal came from our thrown in. Had a few poor throws last night, and even the successful ones we took too much time over

Fair report on a poor performance. I am getting concerned they any team who gives 100% and presses for 90 minutes against us has a good change of not losing.

I was wondering why parts of the ground was under cover.
Is it an old stadium ?

Hard to believe it held 65,000 for an FA Cup tie v Spurs in the early 60's.

From where I was stood it also looked like whoever was marking Deeney slipped which allowed fat boy to lay off the ball using his feet to their winger. Without the slip it would have been a 50/50 header with no guarantees where the ball lands even if he had won the header! Small margins

City lad Bellis slipped and let Deeney lay it off
Muric slips at Preston and we drop two points and also
another two dropped from a slip

Aye. There sideshow Bob from Utd seemed to ‘slip’ quite a few times last night as well!!

It was a poor throw in from Vitinho which gave Zaroury no way out, THB then slipped but I'm not sure he'd have stopped the Deeney being able to lay it off anyway - the overarching problem was the moment the throw in went backwards instead of into Jay to we had too many men ahead of the ball, so we weren’t able to stop the ball getting to Deeney and were short manned to deal with the counter. Either the throw had to go to Jay to pen them in, or we needed at least one more player back - as much to give Zaroury a passing option as anything else.

That being said - Birmingham appeared to have spotted something in the way we set up for throw ins all night - we rarely got an easy ball - and they executed the move for the goal really well. Deserved credit, they were a good, well drilled team. Point gained on this occasion.

Do you really think they're all that analytical during the course of play? Or, are they more like us, simply wondering why we're so crap at throwing the ball back on to the field of play?

They may play that way every game for all we know.
I would say that Birmingham were strong and energetic throughout, hardly ever let us settle and thoroughly deserved their point.
As I saw it the only passage of play where we took control and looked comfortable resulted in JR hitting the post.

Interesting that their game came from a badly taken throw-in. I had noticed that previous to this error that our throw-ins this season have been much better than previous seasons. Oh well.

Having watched highlights of some of their recent games I was worried that they would catch us on the break and so it proved. You have to give credit to Eustace as his subs changed the game. A good point against a team who were really up for it and who had some quality and pace. I think it was a game where we needed more of a focal point for our attack. Not a criticism of Jay as that is not the role he is asked to play.

I think Eustace identified some patterns to our throw ins and blocked them off. I think generally Championship teams view throw ins as a chance to box teams in and get the ball back of cheaply but Brum did it particularly well. I've no idea if teams focus on stopping a cheap restart from a throw as much in the Belgian league, but it was noticeable that Vitinho struggled particularly, and arguably Zaroury did a little when receiving throws. Perhaps part of the learning curve.

They should keep Vitinho away from throw ins. He has little strength and no idea, never a good combination :(
