Burnley v Ajax 1992

Division 4 Champions v UEFA Cup Winners. I was in the Longside.

I can't find any record of the line-ups. The Burnley players are instantly recognisable to me, but who was playing for Ajax? Van Der Saar definitely, but who else?

And here are a few highlights. Good to see John Francis speeding past top players!

I was there too. Ajax had a very young team out, but I remember quite a few of the names becoming stars in the proceeding years. I think the goalscorer for them was about 16 if I remember rightly. Nordin Wooter possibly, but I could be mistaken.

Sounds like van der Sar was in goal from the commentary.

My only memory of the game, other than being there, is the sight of the Ajax squad sat on the extra bench that had to be brought out and positioned next to the dugout to accommodate them all.

Wonder how Seascale managed to get this arranged? Very prestigious for a 4th division team

First time I'd seen a luminous pink goalkeepers shirt.

Strange what sticks in your memory. I too thought Brian Roy played.

Ajax were over here looking for a game but not sure how they came to play us.

That's one of my main memories.

van der Sar took dog's abuse and reacted really well to it! I remember thinking he seemed to be a good character.

Thank you to the OP. In digging out the programme I found this photo. The only copy I haveon file has a nasty crease down the middle. It can now be replaced.

I recall the stadium announcer introducing pronouncing Ajax with a hard J, as per the cleaning product 🤦‍♂️

The Chairman of Ajax was a business associate of Mike Naylor, the Endsleigh boss. It was Mike who persuaded them to play us and he was prepared to cover any shortfall, if the costs weren't met.

One of their star players was Denis Bergamp, who later played for Arsenal. He would never fly and as it was a friendly, was excused from playing against us.

The world record I mentioned above, was the biggest Edam cheese ever made. That was brought over by the Ajax Chairman, as a gift to Bfc and he verified it as a world record. There used to be small circular tables in the sponsors lounge and it covered the whole table and from what I can remember, was a good 7 or 8" deep and would need 2 people to carry it upstairs. Frank Teasdale was handed a knife to cut into it and we were then all passed chunks of it to taste.

It was an incident in 1994 that led to Bergkamp’s fear of flying. He didn’t play against us because most of their first team didn’t.

Must have been a horrible incident to have such an impact on him given how much he otherwise would have flown

Some team mates had been in a crash in the 1980s but he decided he would never fly again after a problem with a flight during the 1994 World Cup.

Must be horrendous to be like that when you are probably required to fly numerous times.

Came back from holiday in wales to watch this in the longside then my dad drove back after. We had a really good team. Could have played the league higher and been contenders imo

Yes didn’t he have to travel separately for European football for club and country? What a fantastic player.

Obviously missed some games because of it but he travelled overland when he could for Arsenal’s European games.

Unbelievable player
