No sign of Obafemi or Churlinov. Although squad is that bloated could easily be others i've forgotten about!

Pretty much what I expected. I don’t think Parker will trust Edwards in a wide position this year. Messi role for him, I think.

Foster 9 suggests what I expected - Foster to start up front as squad stands.

Sonne and Sambo probably off on loan. Benson loses 10, also likely to leave.

Edwards in the number 10 shirt is not the same as Edwards in the number 10 role.

The “number 10” role in a Parker team is a highly demanding role physically, and you have to be the one to lead the press. Brownhill and Hannibal shared that role last season, occasionally with Sarmiento earlier in the season.

There is no way that Edwards will be played in that position as some are suggesting, despite being given the number. If we play a version of 343 then I could see him taking up an inside right role.

Fair point. I don’t actually think we’ll play a traditional 10 actually as per last year, but I think if he does play, I don’t think it will be on the wing. I’m more of an attacking midfield role, as you say.

I think it’s significant else he’d have left Foster with 17 or whatever he was and left the 9 free for a new signing. He also started in the stronger team that played Huddersfield. Only a few weeks to go now and we’ll find out if he starts him, anyway.

I think it’s quite likely that players were given the option to change shirt numbers. I really wouldn’t read anything into it.

I’m not convinced we played with a traditional 10 last year either. It was more of a third centre mid who got himself up with the forward without the ball.

If Edwards is selected in an attacking mid position, he’ll need a lot of legs around him. 2 deeper in midfield and then Hannibal to the left of him probably. It'll be exciting to see how we line up at Spurs and then against Sunderland.

In that case wouldn’t some of those players fancied 1 and 8?

You can definitely read the players that are likely to be moving on from those squad numbers so not sure it’s true that nothing can be read in to the promotions either.

Well the number 1 shirt only became available yesterday and would always likely be reserved for our number one goalkeeper which we now don’t have. The number 8 shirt was presumably reserved for Brownhill, and again has only just become available. Like I said, Foster taking the number 9 shirt does not in any way suggest that Parker will start him as our centre forward for the opening game, ditto Edwards playing in the number 10 role - a shirt number which Benson (not a ‘number 10’) previously wore. You’re reading far too much into this.

Yeah, I agree, so not sure why I said that. My thinking was, we likely won’t play him on the wing or start him, but expect he might come on in more of a ‘free’ role depending on whether we need a goal.

Will definitely be exciting to see how we line up.

Okay, will agree to disagree. My money is on Foster starting and Edwards playing more centrally though as things stand.

Couple of things really:

I don’t think he’ll have the stamina to do all the tracking back Parker will want in the Premier League, or just be generally strong enough defensively, so I’ve thought for a while that he’ll start more centrally this year.

But taking the 10 and not the 7 may also be a sign of how Parker intends to use him this year, yes.

I'm sad about Benson. He's as good a player going forwards as you're likely to see at Championship level. Unplayable on his day.

The argument over the number 9 shirt is dependent on Zian Flemming. If he also wanted the 9 then there would be weight in the argument for Foster starting ahead of him. What I do think, is that the group we have will have bigger priorities than which number they are wearing, they seem to be a level headed bunch.

Trouble is it's about a day a year now. He was brilliant, but he's just not strong enough for the PL, sadly.

It does surprise me to see Foster getting the number 9 shirt regardless of people saying he may or may not play.

It does suggest that we are banking on him playing a major part this season . Maybe the striker we are trying to sign is a little younger than the others and this could help take the pressure off by giving a different striker a more senior standing

Do they not get to choose their number? I know I have seen on the videos previously when they sign they tell them what numbers are available. Foster will probably have chosen it as it was free not been given it. Doesn't mean he has to be the main striker.

Will be a bit of both from the players and club but Benson was 10 last year and that’s been taken from him. He most certainly won’t have requested it be given to someone else. Which suggests to me he’s leaving

I think that’s the point he’s trying to make to show how daft it is that a lot of people are putting a lot of emphasis on the numbers when it doesn’ really mean anything, saying the players 1-11 are the first choice

As we’ve currently no 1 or 8, Wiess (13) & Humpreys (12) are “next in line” for those positions

But imagine the selling point of leaving the number 9 free for a potential incoming striker. "We can offer you the Burnley number 9 shirt, as worn previously by Peter Mumby."
