I see what you’re saying but I think if Wood or Rodriguez got injured or suspended Dyche would undoubtedly change to a 4-5-1 as opposed to starting either Vydra or Wells. I think the time has more than come to get them off the wage bill - and I never expected us to recoup good money but looks like we will.

I think a lot will depend on the nature of any potential ins and outs. An experienced attacking midfielder like Brownhill would work well in a 4-4-1-1, which would allow us to play Wood up front on his own. We could also play Brownhill out on the right, a position that he has done very well in before. That would allow us to give Hendrick more game time in the centre and we could swap him with Brownhill / JBG when we want to focus on the qualities he adds to our play.

More game time for Hendrick in the centre of the pitch could work well for us, because he is probably the closest we have to an energetic box to box midfielder at the moment.

The fact that we haven't heard anything regarding offers for Hendrick in this window leads me to suspect that he will be signing a new contract. If we don't have any positive indicators to suggest that, and we are looking at losing him on a free transfer in the Summer, that would represent a very costly mistake.

The mention of Vydra and Russia was interesting, because a few of the transfer windows in that part of the world don't shut until the end of February. If everything went okay with Barnes, and it was a minor surgery, he could be back in the team by the end of February.

That would allow us to move Vydra on before the Summer, but it won't help us with any immediate incomings. It might be an option, but if it is purely about putting cash into our bank account that we can't spend until the Summer I would rather keep hold of Vydra. Cash in the bank, without an incoming player attached to the deal in some way, would only make life easier for the recruitment team at the expense of our on the pitch options.

Long has been with us through 4 managers and aside from loans none of them have tried to sell him. Nobody should be rated on Saturdays performance or we’d be looking for 11 new men.

However, if we are simply selling players to " give our transfer funds a shot in the arm for the Summer ", like we did in the last Winter window, that strikes me as problematic in more ways than one.

Selling one of our strikers is something of a free hit. Sending Nahki on loan to QPR helped us out financially, but it didn't really affect our " on the pitch " performance.

Now is a good time to sell Nahki. Everyone stands to benefi from a sale, but if the sale isn't accompanied by an incoming player ( in a position that we urgently need to fill - like central midfield ) it will be very disappointing. And by incoming player I don't mean another last contract, hold the fort player, with no holding value.

Selling two strikers would have an element of risk, although not as much risk as we shouldered last year ( by selling Vokes and signing Crouch ), if we do it when Barnes is back fit and firing.

Personally, I really can't see the point of shouldering that lesser risk unless the money is " out of this world generous " or the deal has some other factor tied to it which means we definitely need to act on it now.

Then again, the whole Vydra to Russia ( Nixon titbit ) seems somewhat implausible.

BTW Nobody in the squad is cheap. As last years figures showed every first team squad player earned over a million.

If we are facing facts, then we should face the fact that the squad is threadbare. Losing all those players, and being unable to attract replacements, would leave us in deep ****. Wether its now or summer we need to improve the squad in small steps, there isnt an alternative.

Kevin Long has been a great servant to this club and been extremely unfortunate to have the likes of Duff, Shackell, Keane, Mee, Tarkowski and our joint record signing Ben Gibson ahead of him in the pecking order during his near ten year stretch at our club.
Also remember he tore his ACL on his Premier league debut and has, lets be honest, been a pretty decent defender undeserving of some of the horseshit on here.

Not really. Long has started a handful of Premier League games in his 10 years here- less than 50 appearances in all competitions. He’s never even played Championship football regularly.

By and large Dyche has had him at 4th choice, particularly since our most recent promotion. I can only assume that’s because he prefers to have someone else he can call upon in the event that either of his preferred pair are injured.

If the survival margins are tight and Tarks or Mee get injured, I’d rather rely on Gibson, than Long. That’s not scapegoating Long. It’s looking at their experience and the fact that Dyche himself appears to rate one over the other.

There’s a good reason why so many clubs appear to want to sign Gibson and Long is very rarely linked with anyone.

No problem with Long at 4th choice. I just think it’s a big risk selling Gibson and promoting Long (or Dunne) to 3rd choice.

2 premier league games ago people said we are doomed, now people think we are safe...we we're by no means doomed then and are by no means safe now. We won't think so until we hit the 40 point mark and perhaps even until we're mathematically safe.

People look at fixture's thinking we have the best chance but football doesn't always work like that. Norwich are rock bottom and can still beat any team on their day yet they have worse remaining fixture's than us. Surely the last 3 results shows that any presumptions should be taken lightly and that games against Bournemouth and Newcastle can easily see us beaten?

There's always one team that gets sucked in and we must make sure it's not us.

Given the rumors (if they are too believed) any incomings are not going to be players that walk into the first 11 anyway and given players under scrutiny have been performing a lot better I don't think they are due to be replaced any time soon.

Yeah we really need a right back and a central midfielder but I just can't see it happening with the turnaround in form.

Yes I think clearing the deadwood to allow for a makeover in the summer is smart, threadbare squad? We have 4 senior goalkeepers, 5 strikers and 5 central defenders. We are overstocked and lacking qualities, players need to leave and get off the wage bill to make room for new additions.

What purpose does Joe Hart serve that Peacock Farrell couldn’t? Hart should go, we don’t need him.

What contribution do Vydra and Wells make? We have 3 strikers ahead of them, I take your point about Barnes injured but Dyche would play 4411 with Hendrick over starting either of Wells or Vydra. They aren’t contributing so let’s get them both off the wage bill and recoup £8m-13m combined to sign 1 forward so we have 4 not 5.

Gibson another, no doubt one of our highest earners and what has he contributed? Nothing. We don’t need him, he’s an expensive luxury we don’t need draining our resources. Mee and Tark rarely miss games, Gibson is made out of wet tissue paper, he’s supposed to be “cover for injuries” when he’s always injured himself. We have Dunne and Long, if they aren’t deemed good enough to cover for injuries then ship them out too (I think Long is more than good enough cover).

Lowton Brady Lennon id wait until the summer to ship out because they’re actually needed as cover/bench options, in Lowtons case actually first choice atm and seems to have refound a little form of late.

I agree been a good back up in the shadows but you also have to ask yourself why not go and have a career in the lower leagues playing week in week out ? He basically has not had a career.

Well he wouldn't be earning as much in the lower leagues, would likely have had inferior training facilities/coaching staff and maybe wouldn't have been a regular in the Republic of Ireland squad for the past three years. Overall I'd say he's had a pretty good career.

Salary. Nobody would pay him what he gets from us. You’ll probably turn that around and say “well he can’t be worth it” but he is. These guys don’t get £30 slipped into their boots after a game. It’s a new world.
