When David Icke Played at Turf Moor.........

Post by Polesworth » Fri Jun 05, 2020 5:47 pm

.....it was David Hartley that took the headlines back in 1968.

Spotted this while looking at some old scrapbooks I kept as a kid. If memory serves me right David Hartley never played first team football for us. David Icke went on to play for Hereford I do believe.

According to other reports, Coventry's goalkeeper was Dick Deighton. I can only assume that Deighton was injured because Icke was just a couple of weeks past his 16th birthday when the final was played.

As for Hartley, one of only two, the other being goalkeeper Gerry McEvoy, who didn't play in our first team although Hartley got more mentions in the Burnley Express over the years than a lot of those players. He worked for the CPS and was often reported as the prosecutor in local court cases.

I was a colleague of David Hartley for a couple of years. I returned to Cumbria in 1983 as a Prosecuting Solicitor. I was based in West Cumbria and David was in Barrow.

We used to meet at the Christmas Parties. It turned out we'd met much earlier though; we were born within a couple of days of each other in the same nursing home in Reedley.

Wasn’t Gerry McEvoy one of Saddam Hussains British hostages? I feel sure he was but can’t find the proof.
