Scottish Premier League

Post by TommyJohnson » Sat Aug 22, 2020 3:59 pm

Just watching Rangers on my perfectly legal stream and it's an absolute Dog & Duck league.

Celtic & Rangers would be mid table Championship teams at best and the rest are league 2/National league standard.

To be be honest I find these slightly gloating, predictable and tiresome comments about how inferior the Scottish league to be, er, slightly gloating, predictable and tiresome.
We’re not that great ourselves.

Scottish football is probably further behind English football than it’s ever been

Rangers won 2-0 and then lost 0-1 in the other home game in the Scottish Premier League.

To be fair to Scottish football we didn't exactly rip Aberdeen to bits a couple of years ago and we're in supposedly the best league in the world.

I don’t think you judge the difference between two leagues on a couple of games. They’d already kicked off their domestic season too which was an advantage.

I go to watch Queen of the South five or six times a season. They are in the Scottish Championship.

I would say the Scottish Championship is English League Two level, at best.

We tend to not rip teams to bits, even with 70-80% possession (another rarity).
You could probably count half a dozen games or so where we have scored 4 or more.

I think it’s fairly evident the Scottish league is of a lower quality than the English. So what? It’s not exactly a revelation. I find the subject rather tedious.
Plus the fact its said from this superior, gloating position, as if it makes us somehow better.

It has its own charms. It's not been completely screwed by diving players, refs booking players for the slightest contact, VAR, or shady plutocrats in the same way English football has.

Micky Mellon doesn't think it's a tin pot league, or Stephen Gerrard, it's worth noting that Celtic reached the last 32 of the EL. and Rangers the last 16.

Which is much further than we ever did on our European foray a few years ago, and as has been pointed out, those Aberdeen ties were well in the balance over the 2 legs.

And both Old Firm teams have reached European finals in the last 20 years.

Also there's been several England-Scotland battles in European competition in recent years and they've generally been well contested, admittedly there is a gulf between the Old Firm and the rest, but Celtic & Rangers would be top half PL clubs, and they'd attract players if they had the TV monies afforded to the rest of the PL teams.

Comparing the cash-rich EPL, and the SPFL, is like comparing apples and oranges, PL recent TV deal £4.5 billion, SPFL recent TV deal £150 million, those are rough and ready figures, but they just emphasise the huge financial gulf that exists between the two leagues, and most of the revenue up here is driven by the Old Firm teams.

Bill Shankly's advice to his team was, "Don't look at the opponent till you see the full breakfast round the eyes"... :-) Especially when playing Celtic... :-)

Went to see rangers v killie Year before last. Left before half time.... it was really, really bad.

Went to see Celtic v Greenock Morton in the cup a few years ago.... that was also shocking. The upside? Morton won....

Top half of EPL? Comedy gold that....

its popular for pathetic bigotry in glasgow, and although many scots love football, the rest are miserably terrible.
