Brilliant Arfield interviews
Obviously not our player any more but very clear why he and we were so successful. Great to see this feedback from Gerrard. And the interview with Arfield himself.

Miss having the likes of him and Boyd in and around or squad.

Great technique.
Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
always like him, but let’s not forget the tin pot level he is playing at. In 86 premier league games he netted 5 times. In 70 SPL games he’s scored 19 goals. Huge difference. We need to be aiming higher

Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
Premier League was always a stretch for him but overall what a fantastic job he did for us, particularly in the two promotion seasons. Still can't believe he was released by Huddersfield and was off to a League Two club until we stepped in but it was time for him to go when he moved to Rangers.

Let’s also not forget how amazing Barton was for us in the premier league. But what a disaster he was for rangers.
Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
I still remember being so underwhelmed by his signing and thinking he was nothing more than a body to fill the bench. How totally wrong. What a player he was for us. Not just someone playing out of their skin for a couple of years, he had real ability and quality.

Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
He scored a winner at Ewood, and for that he'll always be a Burnley legend. Ditto Gray & Ings.
It doesn't surprise me he's doing well in Scotland, but the gulf in quality has to be factored in, plus Rangers will dominate most domestic games, so his chances of netting are much higher, he's really impressed in Europe also though, and that's what has caught the eye.

Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
Find it funny when people suggest it's in a tin pot league when he's doing the business in Europe too, let's not forget Aberdeen were not particularly tin pot when we played them.
With our current problems on the right Scott would still be starting for us.

Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
Rangers attacking style suits him far better.
Barton was great in the championship but looked way off it in the premier league.
But you would have to say for both of them that our style doesn't bring the best out of CMs and they're normally outnumbered in the centre.

Scotty was a great player for us and such a great lad. Remember bumping into him in the car park at back of Turf once and he was great with us. Good fun and had plenty of time for us for a good chat. Remember well the Championship season when we sat in the JH lower against Leeds, a load of his mates from Scotland were sat in front of us as they were down for a stag do in Leeds that night. They'd come to watch their mate and have a good night out with him. He scored in the 1st minute and we won 1 0. They were so chuffed and we had great banter with them. Seem to remember they were nearly all Rangers fans.

football opinion s are always subjective, but I couldn't disagree more. He was more than capable . If I saw his name on the team sheet I was delighted. He was tenacious, committed and occasionally ruthless. Those around him often let him down , and frustration became apparent. top class player for Burnley.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Dec 04, 2020 11:16 pmPremier League was always a stretch for him but overall what a fantastic job he did for us, particularly in the two promotion seasons. It's all opinion but he was nothing like the same player, in my view, when he stepped up a level. It's not a criticism of him, he did a fantastic job for us when he was here and I wouldn't have anything wrong to say about him in terms of what he gave us.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Sat Dec 05, 2020 12:03 amfootball opinion s are always subjective, but I couldn't disagree more. Absolutely, he's on my list of players I've seen score at Ewood.

Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
fair enough, my point mainly was that he was not stretched in the top tier, but if fans agreed on player assessments, there would be no fun or debates. We all have our reasons for seeing something in our players that others might not agree with.
same thing with barton, I had fans around me who detested him, when it seemed obvious he was pulling the strings in our midfield and elsewhere.

Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
If we are talking recent midfielders then I'd throw in David Jones. He was central to both our promotions, absolutely brilliant alongside Dean Marney and then Joey Barton. Yet the moaning about him was incredible.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Sat Dec 05, 2020 12:13 amfair enough, my point mainly was that he was not stretched in the top tier, but if fans agreed on player assessments, there would be no fun or debates. As for Joey. I can understand fully why people didn't want to sign him initially given his past record but I wonder how many of those who said no at the time had changed their minds by the time he left us. Another player who was superb for us.
Now remind me how much Sean paid for those three in transfer fees.

he paid exactly ten bob, and if you counter my costings, you will be looking at a lifetime ban. Couldn’t agree more. I thought Jones was superb for us but he divided opinion. I didn’t like Barton before but as a Burnley fan you can’t help but see how great his contribution was. Arfield was a very good player for us but playing in the SPL is nowhere near PL standard. Some players shine in the SPL but can’t don’t realky cut it in English leagues ( I can think of a former manager ).ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Dec 05, 2020 12:16 amIf we are talking recent midfielders then I'd throw in David Jones. Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
I loved Scotty Arfield, but the final year for us made me realise we needed to move on. That’s just progress, and didn’t mean he was poor, but just not what we needed. Burnley being Burnley though we never quite replaced him properly.
For me the Scottish League is mainly Championship level and below, but for 2 clubs which are clearly, IMO, mid-table Premier League standard. You then usually have Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts pushing for 3rd place, who seem to be top end Championship, bottom of Prem standard. After that there seems to be a huge gulf.

Payers like Scott Arfield are always needed in a successful squad.
He puts in 100% every single time he puts on the shirt, the passion desire and effort is always there regardless.
It's so easy to like players like Arfield as he is so humble and a top bloke.
Was a great player for us, and will be a Burnley legend forever for that goal and celebration.

Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
Probably my favourite player of the Dyche era and still on here underrated by some. I thought he did okay in the Prem, better than I thought he would. Anyone that scored a winner at Ewood and 2 winners against Leeds is good enough for me.
Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
As I said I really like Arfield. He’s clearly a top bloke and like CT says his performances during our promotion was brilliant. I did think Premier league was a step to far for him but that’s not a criticism, he was capable but just no where near as good at the top level.
I am very happy he’s continuing to have success.
Also as for the SPL not being tin pot because we made Aberdeen look half decent, I think that says more about us than them

Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
It proves the direction the club is heading when some of our fans are wanting Arfield back who was an excellent servant, during his time at the club
Lets hope the proposed takeover happens sooner rather than later, then we can add some quality that is desperately needed to our squad

Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
In the Prem, he was asked to run back and forth up and down the wing, for 90 mins, to make attacks and protect tge fullback. Same for George Boys.
At Gers, he is right behind the striker. More often and marauding across midfield. Makes a huge difference.
They are also playing good Euro teams and winning.
24 undefeated must have rung a bell for him!
Re: Brilliant Arfield interviews
Hardly a stretch. At that time, our entire team could be described that way and in that group, he and George Boys had the best engines in the league.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Dec 04, 2020 11:16 pmPremier League was always a stretch for him but overall what a fantastic job he did for us, particularly in the two promotion seasons.
