Your most memorable Sports Commentators lines ....

Post by Clarets4me » Fri Jul 09, 2021 2:21 pm

I'll kick off with a few ......

" He's getting a tremendous reception, you've never heard one like it at Liverpool, he's coming up to win it like a fresh horse, Red Rum wins the National " - Peter O'Sullevan, 1977

" Don't bother even looking for that, let alone chasing it, it's gone straight into the Confectionary stall and out again ! - " Richie Benaud 1981

" Damon Hill exits the chicane and wins the Japanese Grand Prix .... and I've got to stop because I've got a lump in my throat ! " Murray Walker 1996

" Carole Vordeman ! I was watching her on " Countdown " the other day and I got aroused ! Seven letters .... not bad for a lad who left school at 15 ! " - Peter Alliss 2011

" I'm not sure I've seen anything quite like this before, and I've been fiddling around with this old stick and ball game for quite some time !" - Richie Benaud 2000

Stewart Machin : AP McCoy takes a look between his legs and likes what he sees

Ted Walsh (father of Ruby & Katie) : This is a really lovely horse & I speak from experience since I mounted her mother

We came in our thousands to bury a football legend… and stayed to sing their praises.

“Yes, he just didn’t quite get his leg over.” Aggers on Botham's hit wicket dismissal in 1991.

And what followed was comedy gold as even the great Bill Frindall & Brian Johnston creased up laughing hysterically at Agger's distress.

The most famous one of all surely-

Some people are on the pitch! They think it's all over!

It is now, it's four!

Don’t know the commentator, but at Wimbledon, a women’s’ game, it had rained and the grass was slippy. As a player went for the ball she lost her footing and her skirt flipped up, displaying her “frillies”

The commentator said “ooh, you can see the skid marks from here”

Given your taste for " Trivia " and Quizzes , I thought you'd appreciate the following .....

As Bill Frindall was known for statistics, it is apt that he was born on the first day of the last " Timeless " Test, between England and South Africa ( 3rd March 1939 ), the game spanned 12 days ( 9 days play with a day lost to rain and 2 " Rest " days ). It was declared a draw, only because England's ship was leaving the following day ..... Frindall's funeral was held on 13th February 2009, the day of the " Shortest " ever Test, when the game between West Indies & England in Antigua was abandoned after only 10 balls due to an unfit outfield .... Strange but true !! :D

Wow! that's a great trivia stat, and no I wasn't at the South Africa marathon. :) Bit of a different attitude to cricket in those days, 12 days for a test blimey!, and after all that they still didn't get a positive outcome.

Was Frindall only 70 when he passed, for some reason I always imagined him as much older.

I should remember that WI abandonment, but it doesn't ring any bells with me, I recall the WI test in the 90's when play was annulled due to a dodgy pitch shall we say, and Alec Stewart batting for about an hour while enduring short-pitched bowling on what can best be described as a minefield.

It was Clive Tyldesley

One of my favourites.

Goodness me, what a goal. From Paterson. If that's the goal that takes them to Wembley, you cannot argue with that.

Not a quote from a commentator but after the 1964 FA Cup Final Ronnie Boyce, scorer of West Ham's winning goal with a header was asked to describe it and in a rich Cockney accent just said 'well, over it come and in it went'. Priceless.

Brian Johnston again when an Australian batsman was hit in the box off the fifth ball of the over who I think might have been Rick McCosker. He was in some pain and Johnston was telling the listeners he couldn't possibly continue. When he did, Johnston said something like: "My word, he is going to continue. One ball left."

“One or two cracks starting to appear now” Jonathan Pearce commentating on one of the Women’s World Cup Games a few years ago.

Also Jonathan Pearce from an England women’s game “Well played Ellen White, she went early, planted her feet in the ground and she knew she was going to get a right old hammering from behind”

Very recently

Jamie Carragher as co-commentator on the Everton v Burnley match "It's just like watching Brazil" as Burnley strung some passes together and attacked the Everton goal. We were wearing our yellow strip and he even remarked "similar colours."

I always forget the name of that commentator but he's such a brilliant one. He did the Blackburn V Burnley and the Reading v Burnley game. His voice sounds into it without overdoing it. The transcript above is all he said from the Leicester penalty miss to the Watford winner. Great commentating.
