The public have shown time and time again they can’t be trusted with anything, they’re the last people who should be deciding anything. You’ve got people on here suggesting capital punishment for vandalism ffs.

Capital would certainly be excessive even though these are probably no hopers. They will probably be given some voluntary counselling and free vouchers. Corporal punishment would suffice. It works well in other countries as a deterrent.

It’s a massive leap from 1 person on this forum suggesting that capital punishment is appropriate for vandalism to the instant assumption that rest of the population would follow suit, I’d suggest that roughly well over 90% would only consider capital punishment for murder & suchlike. We do have idiots in society of course we do but it’s massively overwhelmed with decent folk who are more than capable of making sound pragmatic decisions with fair judgement.

I agree. They can't even be trusted to accept the results of elections etc, so why should we trust them with anything else?claret2018 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 8:42 pmThe public have shown time and time again they can’t be trusted with anything, they’re the last people who should be deciding anything. Anyway, maybe capital punishment is a bit much. It's as far the wrong way to go as letting them off, giving them counselling or a few hours community payback is in the other way.
We have that because of all the "loonie liberals" that maybe haven't actually been in power, but have lobbied and harassed so much that they have got their way. The phrase isn't restricted purely to members of the liberal party, but to those who just can't wait to `help` someone, even though they either don't deserve it or even want it. Can't believe people can't actually see we are reaping what we have sowed for so many years, and by consecutive governments.
Read something the other day that suggested identifying criminals on community payback was being considered? I remember when folk were in uproar about this years ago!
My take on it is simple...Get 'em out cleaning the streets, picking dog toffee up, cleaning up graffiti etc, and make them wear something that identifies them as someone who has a debt to pay to society. Even if one out of the ten is embarrassed enough to not want to do it again, job done. I bet there's folk who will still complain about that being demeaning! To me, that's crazy.

It's one view, as is the view suggested to me by a serving Senior Police Officer a couple of years ago that we should employ the SAS/SBS to eliminate Albanian, Turkish and Jamaican Drug Gangs in London ... he reckoned by legalising Cannabis and disposing of around 150 people, the Government would send a strong message to them and anyone who wanted to follow ...claret2018 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 8:42 pmThe public have shown time and time again they can’t be trusted with anything, they’re the last people who should be deciding anything. Litter picking is a bit of an easy ride though isn’t it?! Why not parade them through the streets naked whilst onlookers hurl chants of ‘shame’ and throw rotten vegetables and human excrement at them?bobinho wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 9:29 pmI agree. Who decides who sits on this sentencing committee? Is it an elected position? What’s the criteria - a certain level of education, owning property, in employment? Do you volunteer or are you conscripted? Should children be treated the same as adults?Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 9:12 pmYou’ve made that assumption that I’ve never been called upon for jury service, of course I trust myself, we need democratic decisions based on personal input.

Re: Bus shelter vandals...
We already have laws to deal with this sort of thing. The problem is that there's a reluctance, throughout the system, to criminalise adolescents, and this only stores up problems for our society. The delinquents grow up believing themselves to be untouchable and go on to commit far more serious crimes in adulthood.

I'm far from qualified to make an accurate statement about this, but I can't imagine that young people who get a criminal record for petty crimes or misdemeanors go on to contribute more to society. I may be completely wrong, but I would say it's unlikely.Billy Balfour wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 9:30 amWe already have laws to deal with this sort of thing. We also don't know whether the miscreants in this case were adolescents.

Great thread
Putting people in work gangs clearly doesn't work, and the current system clearly doesn't work
About time we tried something different, but that won't go down well with, er, the "more reactionary" part of this board
