Nationalities of players who've played for Burnley

Post by tiger76 » Wed Aug 25, 2021 2:17 pm

All the talk of signing the Ivory Coast chap Cornet, got me thinking how many different nationalities have worn the famous BFC colours throughout our glorious history.

Obviously all the 4/5 home nations.

England
Northern Ireland
Rep of Ireland
Scotland
Wales

But who else.

Of the current squad.

Czech Republic
Iceland
New Zealand
The Netherlands

Previous Clarets

Australia (Aiden O'Neill)
Belgium (Defour) (Vossen)
Cameroon (Bikey)
Canada (Arfield)
Denmark (Lindegaard)
France (GKN)
Germany (Hennings)
Norway (Ulvstead)
Zimbabwe (Darikwa)

That's the few I've come up with, is there any more, surely there must be.

Also, depends how you look at it. Arfield represented Canada, but I'd undoubtedly Scottish. Edgar might be a better example for Canada.

Yes as I can't edit the original post.

Just to be clear I'm basing it on the nations they represented at full international level, and they also must have made a 1st team appearance for Burnley, hope that clears things up.

So for instance Ashley Barnes if he represented Austria at international level would count as Austrian and not English.

Edgar's a good shout forget about him.

Are we looking for players who have made an international appearance or just the countries they are from/would have represented?

If we are basing it on caps won though.... it makes the list.

Guess we wouldn't include Tony Cascarino on a list of Great Sporting Irishmen, mind

I was initially just asking for the countries, but it appears to have snowballed into naming specific players, however that's fine as well if you want to identify particular individuals.

To simplify they must have made a full international appearance for any particular nation, and also have played for our 1st team. Cup games count also it doesn't need to be league games, just any 1st team appearance is required.

Hope that clears any confusion up thanks.

It's really the number of different countries I'm interested in, considering we're deemed to not be a very diverse club it's illuminating how many different nationalities have played for BFC, and this list should hopefully dispel some myths about how inclusive we are as a club I hope.

If you require the players to have made a full international appearance why did you put Rouwen Hennings and Aiden O'Neill in your OP?

Yes your correct, I never checked them first, they have represented Germany & Australia at youth levels, but neither has yet made an appearance at senior level, apologies I never said they were all 100% did I, they were just amongst the names who came to mind.
