A 4-1 victory away from home in those strange closing weeks of our first Premier League campaign.

Wasn't that the day our relegation was confirmed due to other results, surreal really winning 4-1 away from home, and yet it counting for nowt.

And then we slammed 4 goals past Spurs on the final day, after falling 2-0 down early on,

Sadly that glut of goals came when it didn't matter, as our fate was sealed weeks prior.

No, incredibly that result took us within 4 points of Wigan in 17th with 4 games still remaining. As the table turned out, we were a win at the JJB/DW away from surviving relegation that season.

Ah! right must be getting confused with 14/15 season then.

What killed is that season, apart from the obvious Coyle shenanigans, and some key injuries, notably to Chris McCann, was our poor results against those teams in and around us.

We lost to Pompey, Wigan & Wolves home and away, and those 6 games should, and probably could have yielded several crucial points.

Now you mention it I do remember the Wigan game at the DW, we battered them for 90 minutes that day, and yet somehow couldn't put the ball in the net, then they nabbed the winner in the dying seconds, Jensen at fault I think, and that was the vital game, even if we didn't know this at the time, purely the manner of our loss stunk of a relegation side.

Not to mention a dismal performance away at Bolton when we came up against Coyle for the first time.

Yes but TBF to Brian Laws anything that could go wrong that night did go wrong, McCann went off injured early, and I'm fairly certain he didn't play again all season after that defeat, plus I seem to recall at least one other player going off with an injury, and we may even have finished the match with 10 man, due to having made all 3 subs.

If I recall correctly we did finish the match with 10 men after Frederic Nimani was brought on.

Hasn't that too often been a problem for Burnley? Or perhaps more accurately, that we seem to raise our game to often beat the better sides, but lower it and lose to the poorer ones; I've watched us do it in all four divisions, so hardly a new phenomena. :(

The defeat at Wigan was all out own doing, we had a free kick late on and a chance to grab a win but Laws told the centre half’s to stay back and not go up……a minute later we conceded and it was game over. Terrible management.

We've got better under SD at taking care of those key games generally, last season perhaps not so much, but we still we took enough points when we needed to.

Agreed, for the most part we 'took care of them' but life would be a little easier if we could instead beat the bottom four or five clubs, rather than having to rely on winning at Anfield or Goodison Park; six points off both Wolves and Palace obscured a multitude of sins and failures last season.

I wouldn't necessarily pay much heed to last season's results, that was a unique campaign for many reasons.

I do agree we need to ensure we pick up several wins against those lower sides this season though, as we're unlikely to win 6 away games this time.

& Sheffield United & West Brom & Fulham didn’t, if the other 3 are just as bad we should be ok again, Watford & Brentford will start dropping & that’s without Norwich who haven’t even started yet.
