Sky said the ref had decided to give a red, but VAR checked it before it was awarded and agreed with the decision.
So Pawson made the call, and once he'd decided to give a red, then it was unlikely VAR would overrule him.

I still think Leeds will have a case to appeal this decision though.

Makes me wonder, is there an official policy that if any (fair) challenge results in a bad injury then a red card is issued. If so I think this is grossly unfair. If the challenge is deemed “fair” how can you possibly penalise the player who’s made the tackle. The laws of the game would need to change to make all tackling illegal.
Well, it seems we’re going that way…

From the Bbc website:

The Premier League have clarified to The Athletic that Leeds defender Pascal Strujik was sent off due to “the intensity and endangerment of Harvey Elliott”.
So, play without intensity, is that what players should do now?

Just shown it again, it's never a red, if that is a red card offence then football is finished, again best wishes to the lad but I can't put any blame on the Leeds lad

It was an excellent tackle and just an unfortunate tangle of legs has injured Elliott. Shame as he looks an awesome talent. It's not even foul though, never mind a red card.

Dirty Leeds are at again
Straight red for this ankle dislocating tackle
The ref was very weak and needed to clamp down much earlier to prevent the game escalating into chaos
The good news from the match was another defeat for the most despised team in England.

No way on earth was it a red card. As said, if this is how football is going it's a big concern.

Get ready for the candle light vigils with the players wearing matching t-shirts with Elliots name and number on the back of them all. The scousers might even do a minutes silence too.

Was watching it with two liverpool fans. Both said it was never a red.

Not a red for me. Yellow at a push… they applaud tackles like that week in week out, that it was mistimed and resulted in a bad injury was just very unfortunate, not malicious or out of control.

TBH I thought it was brilliantly timed, he won the ball cleanly with his leading foot and Elliott, unfortunately, collided with his trailing foot.
I hope Leeds appeal this red card, though I doubt they would have success.

I’m amazed how many have an opinion. I only watched it live and thought it was a hefty challenge but would need replays from various angles to decide intent and endangerment.

Just seen the incident on SSN, it didn’t look like a red to me, more a mistimed, silly tackle.

The Harvey Elliott tackle - was it a red card?

Post by gandhisflipflop » Sun Sep 12, 2021 9:58 pm

Seems to be dividing opinion today. The end result is unfortunate I am sure everyone will agree but I don’t see it as a red card offence personally. What are other people’s opinions?

Only seen it tonight on MOTD. The commentator says great tackle on the ref plays on and only stops the game when alerted to the injury. So if he’s saying he’d decided to send off the Leeds player before VAR ‘confirmed’ it why on earth had he not given a foul in the first place.

It’s a hugely unfortunate incident for Elliot but I do hope the red card is rescinded, it’s fortunate it didn’t really affect the result.
