The weather

Post by lakedistrictclaret » Thu Oct 28, 2021 2:09 pm

What's it like down there?

I live in a village four miles north-east of Cockermouth, and it hasn't stopped raining for thirty hours. Cockermouth itself is on flood alert.

My usual route to Turf Moor, down the A591 through the Lakes, is impassable between Grasmere and Rydal, so unless it improves I'll have to go A66-M6 on Saturday.

That's the only thing wrong with living up here. Once it starts raining it doesn't know when to stop.

It's not to bad.

I heard the weather forecast last night say Cumbria was getting a months rain in 24 hours.

I hope everything is alright up there and people are safe.

I drove up from the south, expecting torrents. Just drizzle near Charnock Richard services and a wet road M65. No rain!

Been fine for most of the day, apart from a bit a drizzle earlier on this morning.

Lakedistrict. We’re just outside Skipton. Been fine here but very windy, had a slight shower a few minutes ago but otherwise nothing, perhaps we’re due some wet stuff later. Another lovely part of the country you live in, hope it clears up for you in time for your journey on Saturday.

Just "topping up" the lakes. It needs to do that every now and again.

I love the drive from Keswick down to Windermere, then on past Kendal and south over the Trough into the Ribble Valley. I guess most Clarets could say this.

I'm just off the banks of the River Kent in Kendal and just waiting for my car to drown.

I’ve done some travelling this week and Glasgow and the surrounding areas have been terrible in the dark, all the fields and roads flooded in some areas.

Just wondered how things are with you today lakedistrictclaret. It looked bad on the news last night, has it relented at all?

Thanks beddie.

It stopped raining yesterday evening causing the river level to drop. It has started again though, and it's now raining heavily. However, it's not going to be as prolonged and I understand the situation is under control.

A few houses in Cockermouth have been flooded though.

It looks ok for my drive to Burnley tomorrow.

Thanks for the update lakedistrict. Hopefully as you say things will ease off and you’ll have a safe journey tomorrow. Make sure you’re there as we’re about to witness a home win. :)

Apparently there was fourteen and half inches of rain in one day up there yesterday, which is incredible. There are now very strong gusts of wind in Nelson.

Certainly different.

Slightly off topic, has the lorry been cleared from the M6 northbound ?I wonder if it affected anyone's journey/ commute.

edit, Just seen that it opened around midnight last night. I'm sure it must have made the a6 and the roads round the lakes a lot worse. Especially with the flooding added to the mix.

Up in Cumbrian Pennines near Kirkby Stephen. Thought the roof was coming off Wed night. Rivers are close to full and rail disruption everywhere. Back end of it is about to go through now, howling wind and peoples rubbish flying everywhere. People alarmed by storms and equate it to climate change but the weather is just **** up here. BTW: Typical autumn in these latitudes...
