This is proper Dycheball.

Imagine the reaction from our fans if it was Joe Hart that did what Nick Pope did today. Awful.

He fell into a Newcastle player and dropped the ballclaretburns wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 3:48 pmHe didn't drop it though did he? It was safely in his hands and it popped out due to the collision with the Newcastle player.

I actually thought we were the best side for most of that first half
Trouble is now, they can improve and not sure we can

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
We’re still in it. Just need a bit more calmness on the ball. We’re perhaps getting carried away by the atmosphere.
Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
If he had a class touch and could score regularly he wouldn't be here. Would you swop him for Joelinton? Would anyone on here? Didn't think so!
Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
Say what you want about the goal but we are absolutely inept going forward. Don’t have any faith that a single cross will result in an effort on target. None.

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
Game has turned sharply.
First 35 we had them & the crowd subdued. Half chances but they were all ours, they didn't get a sniff.
Suddenly Cornet is off and we gift them a goal. Going to be a struggle to come away with a point at this rate.

Agreed. It’s pick up ball. Pass around a bit to get in a good crossing position. Pass back 20m cause scared of trying to beat a man. Hoof back upfield.tarkys_ears wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 3:50 pmNever seen such an immobile team or one so reluctant to go forward.

The only time it was different was when Cornet was on the wing as he’d have a go at beating his man. Unfortunately it turns out he’s got hamstring issues so can’t run.

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
Clarets dominant in terms of possession (for once), territory and numbers of touches, but what we haven’t done is make enough touches in the final third. Especially on our left the attacks have petered out before then.
Need to get more men forward and ask more questions of that poor defence.
Context - McNeil nor Taylor have touched the ball once within 20 yards of the byline on the left hand side.

Pope had the ball until the players head took it out of his hands.
Not the best decision from Pope, however, a worse one from Mason. FK Burnley.

Funny because when he was actually playing he was scoring.jedi_master wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 3:51 pmNo he has played plenty for two seasons and spurns almost every opportunity he gets.
How many minutes has he had this year?
Could you also remind me how many goals he got last year as he spurned nearly every chance?

Gudmundsson excellent, McNeil far too safe, wood and Vydra awful. Cornet looks our only goalscorer these days. What’s happened to wood, he is miles off it. I’m a big fan of his but he’s ******* awful at the moment.
Praying cornet isn’t out for long, you could tell he’d score today.

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
Totally don't deserve to be behind here. But Vydra simply HAS to get that on target there. He had loads of space
Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
Thought he was a little unfortunate - claimed the ball with two hands but landed on the opposition player causing him to spill it. Never a foul though. Hard to overly criticise and suggest he should've punched it given how proficient and consistent he is at claiming high balls.Milltown1882 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 3:52 pmImagine the reaction from our fans if it was Joe Hart that did what Nick Pope did today. Its not a foul on Pope for me - always thought keepers are overprotected - but in the vast majority of cases those sort of incidents get given as fouls.

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
We played ok for the first half hour, then Cornet goes off injured and we look toothless up top, even so it took a huge error by Pope to gift them their goal, and we have created chances, we just need to believe we can get back into this Newcastle are no great shakes, but we need to step up 2nd half and trouble their defence, a true test of character now for this team, but it is only 1-0, and it's been an even contest, so all isn't lost yet.
Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
Commentator said “ Newcastle have been poor but they have the lead”. Says a lot.
Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
It’s the inconsistency for me. If Vydra heading the keepers hand a few weeks back (keeper punched Vydra of course) and keepers gets the free kick then surely Pope was fouled there. He wouldn’t have “spilled” the ball (from 2 hands) without the challenge

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
I agree but had 3 good chances with Cornet's header and early one. First goal was crucial in this game. Turned out to be a disastrous half now with gifting them a goal, and cornet off who couldn't even walk up the tunnel unaided.
In saying that they'll be nervous as hell trying to get this win so if we stay calm,. We've a chance..

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
From Law 12:
Yet again, VAR has gone against us.
It's a foul. There's little room for ambiguity in the laws of the game there. The Laws of Football wrote:A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball with the hand(s) when:
the ball is between the hands or between the hand and any surface (e.g. ground, own body) or by touching it with any part of the hands or arms except if the ball rebounds from the goalkeeper or the goalkeeper has made a save
holding the ball in the outstretched open hand
bouncing it on the ground or throwing it in the air
A goalkeeper cannot be challenged by an opponent when in control of the ball with the hand(s).
Yet again, VAR has gone against us.

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
He’s got 7 goals in 71 games for us in the competition that matters (league). A lot of sub appearances there, but he misses sitters in those too (3-3 with Palace a very good example) so they’re just as relevant.
To put this into context, James Tarkowski has scored the same amount of league goals in the same seasons Vydra has been here. From centre back. I would also never even think of terming Tarky a ‘goalscoring defender’.

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
No foul
Pope comes claims the ball as as he comes down the ball hits off the head of the Newcastle player.
Pope if anything should have punched the ball clear.
On the game over all. Two bad teams. Easy to see why both are in bottom 3.
Not confident at this stage we can score.
No invention. Long balls to strikers. Nothing else

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
Not relevant to be thinking in terms of "x fell on y"
Relevant rule is "law 12" which is as unambiguous as possible.
It's a foul.
VAR should be informing the referee to disallow.
Pundits "opnions" on it are neither here nor there. The law is unambiguous about this being a foul.

Key part here "A goalkeeper cannot be challenged by an opponent when in control of the ball with the hand(s)."
He wasn't challenged, he fell into an opposition player.

McNeil 1 assist in 15 games. Works really hard defensively but surely his best asset is going forward and getting great crosses in. Has Dyche changed him to a defender ?
