Hunky Dory - 50 Years Old
David Bowie's classic album Hunky Dory is 50 years old today. What a corker!
It's definitely one of my all time favourite albums of all time.
It's whimsical, lyrical and brilliant.
Who managed to buy it first time round?
What are your standout tracks?
Memories of listening to the music?

Ziggy Stardust was my first Bowie purchase in 1972. I bought Hunky Dory soon after … Changes is my favourite but every track is a classic.

I bought it when it came out.
For me it's one of the very few albums I have ever bought that has no stand-out tracks. They are all brilliant.

I’d have bought it just for Life On Mars. Super album.
Re: Hunky Dory - 50 Years Old
I’ve never liked Dave Bowie. I remember me and a mate first seeing him performing Starman on TOTP and all we could do was laugh at the mega long sideburns on his on his guitarist.
Couldn’t take him serious after that

To follow Hunky Dory...with The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust & Alladin Sane was Bowie at the peak of his power, can't ever recall anyone in musical history bringing out 3 consecutive albums out that were flawless, unless any posters on here can come up with 3 by another artist.

Re: Hunky Dory - 50 Years Old
So as I see it, you never liked one of the most successful, influential and long lasting artists - ever - because his early guitarist had long side burns?
Re: Hunky Dory - 50 Years Old
Daft question really because it’s your opinion that those albums were flawless. I bet there are any number of people who would say that their own personal preferences produced flawless albums. I get you’re a Bowie fan, but others may not agree with your flawless assessmentSteve1956 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 12, 2021 8:47 pmTo follow Hunky Dory...with The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust & Alladin Sane was Bowie at the peak of his power, can't ever recall anyone in musical history bringing out 3 consecutive albums out that were flawless, unless any posters on here can come up with 3 by another artist.

Yep, but maybe his pretentiousness had something to do with it as well.CaptainKirk wrote: ↑Sun Dec 12, 2021 9:02 pmSo as I see it, you never liked one of the most successful, influential and long lasting artists - ever - because his early guitarist had long side burns?

I agree with your assessment of these tremendous albums but I'd offer up Bruce Springsteen with Born to Run , Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River.Steve1956 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 12, 2021 8:47 pmTo follow Hunky Dory...with The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust & Alladin Sane was Bowie at the peak of his power, can't ever recall anyone in musical history bringing out 3 consecutive albums out that were flawless, unless any posters on here can come up with 3 by another artist.

Re: Hunky Dory - 50 Years Old
I had a request in to a radio show this week and on the penultimate song tonight (after 3 hours waiting to see) he actually played it (Xmal Deutschland). And then
I was feeling all pleased with myself and for the FINAL track he played Bowie’s “I can’t give everything away” the last track from Blackstar which is such a lovely, finite song. It was really moving. And i don’t get moved by too much music these days.

Re: Hunky Dory - 50 Years Old
I'd probably go for "Born in the USA" myself JUST pipping "The River" , but we're getting off topic. In terms of "Hunky Dory" my girlfriend in the late 70s had an original copy and we played it regularly. She's probably still got it!Stalbansclaret wrote: ↑Sun Dec 12, 2021 11:04 pmI agree with your assessment of these tremendous albums but I'd offer up Bruce Springsteen with Born to Run , Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River.

Re: Hunky Dory - 50 Years Old
Probably not as commercial but difficult to think of three consecutive albums that were more influential than the Berlin Trilogy - Low, Heroes and Lodger
You can hear so much of the seminal post-punk bands in there - The Fall, Gang of Four and Joy Division in particular
