Wood has missed gilt edged chances, this season. Reminds me of Salah, Kane, Aguerro etc!

His lack of chances is the key.How many times gas McNeil gone down the wing and crossed on his head? Probably none or near! That is a major issue. McNeil wandering about in the middle and not beating players and crossing.

That being the case it could be that a replacement for Wood is in the pipeline. The speculation regarding the potential transfer of Wood was around prior to this week. So maybe the club has been working on something.
It was around for a few days as speculation that I don’t think many of us took seriously. The consolation is that it could be our decision.

It has become clear since last night that any release clause is for a summer window only.
Three local journalists have said that the release clause was triggered.

Chris Boden: ‘Just had it confirmed at this end that Wood’s release clause was triggered by Newcastle - it wasn’t due to kick in in the summer. Nothing Burnley could do. Believe it is £25m, which is good business to be fair - but only if SD can reinvest all or most of that’

I assume when a release clause is triggered they have to pay it in full, up front?

Excellent deal at £25m, if so.

Hi CT, thanks from me - and maybe many others - for merging all the "Chris Wood" threads.

Others, please make it easy for all of us, including the MODs to read your "words of wisdom" by keeping them all on the one thread.

Thanks.

Rumour has it that he might have failed the medical. Something about an in growing toenail. If so, that would explain a lot of things.

No. Until the first half of this season our strikers have scored enough goals. It has always been goals from midfield we were lacking.

Wood scored 12 (late flurry of goals at tail end of season)
Vydra scored 3.
Barnes scored 3
Rodriguex scored 1 (1 more PL goal than he has managed this season thus far)

This clearly shows that only Wood scored anything like enough goals and if he sustained a long term injury we were scuppered.

Luckily Cornet playing out of position proved a revelation.

If he has ingrowing toe nails then he should have been onside more often with us

God knows why Eddie would stretch to 25m for Wood on recent evidence.
I honestly think we've had their pants down here.

But it's still a negative for us if we don't get someone better in...and I suspect we won't.

£25m release clause met, could be activated any time.

Decent fee undeniably, but that's still a low release clause for our main striker IMO.

It’s a huge fee considering the season he’s having and his age.

Once the sawdust has settled CT all will become clear. ;)

So many conflicting reports and ridiculous statements being made about this transfer and it's impact on both clubs.

When we know who and if anybody will be joining us then we can evaluate.

Settle back and have another slice of birthday cake. :P

If it keeps them up & sends us down it’s money well spent from their point of view & it’s very possible that could well be the case, I don’t see any negatives from a NUFC perspective but boy ours where do I start!

given he'd previously been linked with West Ham etc, there's every chance he would have pushed for a move in the summer if we do go down. 25 Million is an outstanding fee for him imho and should easily allow us to bring a couple in, we could end the window stronger if our recruitment team does it's job.

As a Newcastle fan I'm very happy with this deal. Wood is an average Premier League striker and that's a huge improvement on what we've got. Wilson is class, but injury prone. Gayle was a Championship striker at his peak, but he's past that stage now. And that's your lot.

Hopefully Trippier and Fraser can provide the ammo for the big lad.

Ok lost track of everything that’s been poster about Wood now but does anyone think this could just be the mother of all head f#cks from Newcastle.
Find out about the release clause.
Make enquiry.
Agree to meet release fee.
Agree personal terms.
Get medical done.
Then pull out at the final minute???

Screwed Woods head.
Screwed our heads.
Wasted BFC time sending us searching for replacements and not concentrating on chasing more important players??

He is an average PL striker but he's an average PL striker having a very poor season.

The likelihood is that new surroundings, a fresh challenge etc will see an improvement in his form (I really hope not) but if he continues the season as it has gone so far, you're going to be very disappointed.

You should be worried we all should be especially the people who still think we’ve got a chance of staying up, apart from Newcastle weakening us I think you’ve answered your question with your post, if wood is the best Newcastle can attract & go for it’s illogical to think we could get better like for like. Without questioning the rights & wrongs we have been stitched up like a kipper at the worst possible time by our closest relegation rival just let that sink in.
I don't understand why people should be worried. You've already acknowledged that were going down, in which case it's perfectly fine to sell while his value is at its highest and the perfect time to get someone young with potential in.
For years posters have been saying how many good deals can be had in the foreign market yet now it's, we'll never replace Wood. Personally I don't buy all this nonsense of we'll never replace his ten plus goals a season, if we brought a striker who only scored 3 but got ten assists I think we'd have happily replaced him.
A midfielder we signed for 15m has outscored him upfront this term, let that sink in. Waiting for the comments of Cornets not a striker so I can counteract with- I'd happily take another 15m midfielder up top if this is the result. I'm sticking my neck out, I think a couple of seasons down the line this will be like the Thomas transfer and a great bit of business.
While we may not get a stiker who scores as many, if we get one who can also bring others into play and get some assists, we'll end up with more goals across the pitch. There is some very old fashioned thinking on here.
I think we've stitched Newcastle up.

Ok so for all those happy to see Wood go I set you a challenge as I could do with a laugh.

The challenge is simple.

Please suggest a list of PL strikers who have scored 10 goals plus for the previous 4 seasons, who we could sign costing less than £25m and who would play for us on wages between £50k and £60k a week.

I'm not denying £25m for us is good for a 30 year old but what strikers are we left with. Most PL defenders will say that playing against Wood is an absolute nightmare and he is highly regarded in that respect. Its not a good deal given our current plight and we had all hope we can get replacement strikers in that save our season.

Okay I understand your point but in reality it is pointless as we have a striker who wanted to leave and a club who were prepared to match his release clause. If he wants to leave there is no point keeping him. I would also say the same for any defenders who maybe thinking the same way.

Aye, McNeil's been filling Wood's boots with led all season so his touch is gash, pushing him beyond the past defender so he's offside countless times, shouting at him before he takes a shot so he fluffs it and straps blinkers on him before each game so he doesn't appear to realise there's anyone else around him. Yes, it's Dwight's fault Wood has been rubbish.

we wont be looking in the PL, it's a ridiculously pointless question. Just to remind you when we signed Wood he had scored 1 (one) PL goal for Leicester. The flapping from some folks is embarrassing

We don't have to get a player that has done that though, we just have to find one that is capable of doing it now or in the future. I'm not saying it will be easy but Cornet cost us just over half of what we are selling Wood for and he looks capable of doing it. Find another 1 or 2 of them and we will have played a blinder. Get in some dross and we're sunk.

It's well and truly down to Pace and the recruitment team now: We have the opportunity to make this a good deal if we don't blow it.

Bang on Vegas.
None of these people seem to acknowledge we signed a player for 15m at the start of the season who hasn't been in the prem, isn't a striker and hasn't scored x amount of goals over his career. Yet he's come in and out done Wood easily and is looking with a full season under his belt at ten plus goals.

Another one bang on.

I'm guessing your other username is Norman, as you have made nearly word for word identical posts from yesterday...

Stupid question.

Chris Wood had scored 1 premier league goal when we signed him.

Players capable of playing in the premier league and scoring regularly don’t necessarily have to be already playing in the premier league and scoring regularly.

Emmanuel Denis cost Watford relative peanuts and he will score ten goals this season.

Cornet didn’t cost us the earth and would score 10 goals over a full season.

Talk of buying a 50 prem goal striker - we don’t need that. Wood isn’t really a 50 prem goal striker, just we gave him a platform to succeed. We need someone who will fit our style and get 6+ goals this season. Cornet has 6 in about 10 games..!

So if Newcastle stop up at the expense of us due to CW goal or assist contributions will that still be a stitch up?

Sure he is. Probably more so with Wood for deserting us than Pace, given it was a contractual clause.

Stop flapping about Newcastle. Us staying up/going down wont be on who Newcastle sign it will be because we can't win games - all of those so far this season have been with Wood in the team. Selling Wood won't weaken us in the slightest given his performances and the way we play with him in the team
