Taffy for me too. I would have been 9 in 1975. I had my grandma sew a number 11 onto my 1st Burnley shirt the year before. My first sporting hero. I was even more upset when he scored against us for Derby on the turf in our last season in the old 1st division.

If I had to pick one then it would be Ralph Coates, May 71. A sad day for our fans.

Mine would be Brian O'Neil. I think it would have been about 1970. I remember the Longside chanting 'If Brian O'Neil goes, so do we'. So I thought there was no way Bob Lord would sell him and upset the fans! Naive or what?

David Eyers for me, wasn't the most high profile player, but I seem to remember he went for just £40,000 which was incredible at the time.

For some strange reason, us not being able to complete the signing of Luton Shelton due to work permit issues, only for him to sign for Sheffield United shortly after. I was excited by the potential signing
I was gutted when Blake left though.

Ralph Coates - there'd been denial after denial but my dad, bless him, did his best to prepare me for the inevitable. I was devastated.
Martin Dobson being sold to Everton to pay for a stand wasn't far behind.

Billy Hamilton. I was gutted.
Peter noble to Blackpool. I knew he was at the end of his career but I was Peter noble mad. I idolised him.
I suppose this thread was started after what’s happened in the last day or so.
Just so you know, I’m ok with what’s happened this last 48 hours.

Dobson for me. Not just because we sold our leader and obviously best player at the time, but because it was done to finance the stand and none of it was ever going to be recycled into the team. A hammer blow which had repurcussions for years.

Re: Which transfer disappointed you the most
I remember being extremely underwhelmed when we signed Ian Helliwell. As for outgoings, my only real disappointments have been the ones which appear to have been acrimonious and left a bitter taste (Robbie Blake and Andy Gray spring to mind). It really irks me when players say they don't want to play.

Andy Gray to Charlton.
Not the biggest name but he was our only attacking threat at the time. Lethal with his back to goal and spinning defenders.

Having just watched him against us for Stockport I was incredulous at the thought we then shelled out £1m on him.

Another vote for Billy Hamilton here. Idolised him as a kid. And to lose him to Oxford Utd!
Curiously gutted about selling Gareth Taylor to Forest too. Stan was trying to build something in the Championship and we were more than competitive. We just didn’t have the proverbial pot to p*** in. Life didn’t seem fair when slightly wealthier clubs nabbed our most effective players. Gutted.
