I may have missed it but I have not seen any mention of the fact that Putin made his name in the KGB becoming head of an organisation that is the equivalent of the Gestapo so why the surprise at what he is doing now now he has ultimate power? In any other parlance he would be described as a gangster. Lets not forget that any journalist who stands in his way is quietly liquidated. There is no effective opposition to him from within Russia for the same reason. This is the same man who authorised terror on GB soil by murderers in his regime coming over here to do just that, commit murder with impunity so why are we surprised at his actions now?
It has been evident for some weeks that he was making fools of all those European leaders who thought they were 'negotiating' with him when in fact he was playing them for fools.

Good job. I think the only decision he could make is when to have his afternoon nap or when to change his colostomy bag. Absolutely no doubt that Putin is happy to strut his stuff whilst the US has no leadership.
Putin is no leader, he is a deranged dictator.

I’m well aware of what Putin is. I never said anything about what he is, beyond suggesting he’s emboldened.

All very well banning Aeroflot flights when I can still seemingly hop on a BA flight to Moscow tomorrow.

European airspace should ban any commercial flight taking off from or landing in Russia indefinitely.

I heard on the radio the other day that he wasn't that big of a deal in the KGB.
He made his name after the USSR collapsed though, basically being a thug for hire and then started working his way up the ladder

FIFA and UEFA need to be kicking them out completely. Vettel has also said if they don't get stripped of their F1 race he won't be competing.
How about kicking Chelski out of the league? It's an edifice to Russian money for sure.

Shouldn't just stop at commercial, just as important to target rich private individuals on private jets

The US has issued 3 NOTAMs effective immediately prohibiting US airlines from operating in Ukraine, Belarus, and in Russian airspace within 160 nautical miles of the border between Russia and Ukraine within the Moscow, Samara and Rostov FIRs.

It won't be long until the rest follow

Give them a week's notice, they can return or after that get a train or road route to a friendly nation.

We have to accept anything we do will have consequences to our own. Wealthy Russian elites have bought up property across Europe, make it as hard as possible to access them. Trap them inside Russia with the maniac they back.

Quite laughable… you’ve got the rest of the week to get your assets out…. Wonder what the Ruskies are doing, waiting for a knock on their doors?
They need to shut every corridor in and out of or into Russia with immediate effect, with a definite short window for British evacuees still gormless enough to be in Russia.

All from open source.

There’s a lot. But a lot of it is unverified and can’t be confirmed.

So just trying to stick to reports that either get reported by multiple, genuine, sources or are at least geolocated.
Geolocation in the key

There will be a shed load of misinformation out there, and it will be spread by pro-Russian accounts

Not really true. What is true is he cut through from nowhere - i seem to remember he did everything he could to get noticed in the system, think he even worked in the Stazi (East Germany SS) for a time. He was top of the pile by Gorbachev. I remember the smiling face s the wall came down, close to Gorbachev re-shown as the West welcomed him to power…

Suspect that might have changed… it’s the notice they’re being given that is laughable. This country is under threat and the time to prevent it becoming a serious direct threat is now, not later. Stop worrying about markets and and start thinking of lives, because if anyone still thinks this is about Ukraine needs to wake up.

PUTIN HAS STATED he wants the Russian Empire returned… that is NATO, that is World War.

An expectation that there will be large scale airborne operation tonight.

Ukraine keeping hold of Gostomel for now is a big win.

Unless something is done about Russian air dominance the Ukraine’s on a hiding to nothing. They need to find a way to win… like Finland did when Soviet Russia looked to gobble them up. There cannot be a no fly zone, but their can be effective anti-aircraft system that could be deployed, up several notches above where we have currently set the bar.

There was a good documentary about Putin and Russia on the BBC a good few years ago. It might still be on iplayer.

Edit - It is still on there. It's called Putin, Russia and the West. It's worth a watch anyway.

Vlad the Invader. Meantime the western leaders are at Diversity conference where they are currently discussing personal pronouns and how Russia can reduce its Carbon emissions. John Kerry - what a man - has just said that Russias invasion of Ukraine has adversely affected the Russian peoples real aim of saving the world. Honestly its true.

I’ll probably have seen it thanks JM - I had a lecturer that was very much into the Cold War despite the fact I was doing Eighteenth Century… to the point I still keep a watching brief on the goings on our our long time allies… the parallels with Hitler are quite frightening. How long before Russi turns on its Jewish populations (again).

I would absolutely be knocking the Gostomel runway out of action. Purely based on it’s close proximity to Kiev.

However, there is a real concern that without further supplies from the West, Ukraine will run out of ammunition.

And that means the need for functioning runways. The next question is how you get those supplies in with Russia dominating the skies. I can’t see any EU/NATO country willing to run that risk now.

Russian forces are already reportedly trying to cut the land border to Poland.

A real tricky situation.

the West aren't flying supplies into Ukraine that's for certain. There's been a lot of action this week and today in Romania and Moldova. I suspect stuff is going in by road

Is it going in by road?

Who is transporting it?

Any large logistics movement via land will still attract Russian attention.

I just can’t see how Ukraine are going to adequately resupply.

Shock horror where you get your news from

#USBiolabs has been trending. The account claiming that Putin may have attacked US biolabs in Ukraine, presumably in response to covid conspiracies, is a follower of Q, has called for the execution of police, media, officials, and doctors, and has pushed past racist rhetoric.

Any reason why the Ukrainians didn't just fire a shitload of missiles at the Russians while they were loitering around the border? Could've wiped a load of the ******* out before they got started.

Because there was a theoretical, if not realistic, avenue to de-escalation. Aggression toward Russia would have given Putin's invasion a slither of legitimacy. But those forces weren't attacked, he invaded on a bogus pretext, and so he's yet again proved he's the criminal we all knew he was.

2 big fish with one cast. It’s too easy
Today hundreds If not thousands of people are dying , I have seen picrures of Russian tanks hit by Javelin missiles we supplied. The lads inside, sons of mothers incineratorated
Villages attacked by planes firing missiles, kids and women killed for no reason at all.

And you think it’s a joke. Seriously.

You've got to be some sort of special biscuit to fish on this thread.

Some of the videos and images on social media are truly disturbing.

Looks like this is going to be a difficult time for a lot of people across the world.

I believe china have also flown in Taiwan air space. Not good for anyone

No country from the west will be putting boots on the ground in Ukraine. The sanctions aren’t seen as a deterrent, not in the short term at least. If that remains the case, is there another outcome other than Russia taking over Ukraine?

Are we simply going to end up with another country run by a regime that we don’t officially recognise, as with Afghanistan?

China has been unsurprisingly quiet on Russia’s actions - they’ll surely be a key part of Putin’s thinking and maybe a crutch to lessen the impact of any restrictions from the West.

Would Putin, assuming he takes Ukraine, dare to push into one of the ex Soviet states, now NATO members? I wouldn’t put anything past him.

Frightening times and the impacts are going to be felt for years, if not decades.

China are watching closely, they want to annex Taiwan just as Putin is doing with Ukraine.

Once they see we are weak, they will attack Taiwan.

That’s why we have to cut off Russia , it would be the only deterrent to China.

Russia will re take Donetsk, Lugansk and Odessa and let the West 'take' the rest back.

That's my forecast. :geek:
