Apparently Putin is trying to mobilise medical students, this is clearly not how he expected things to go

I don't think we've seen the lows yet, but it depends whether this volatility means the fed can rethink rate hikes. It was selling off before this kicked off because liquidity is drying up, but as you say the first big drop was priced in on fear, historically when an invasion is actually underway it rallies. I certainly wouldn't be going all in long at this point though.CombatClaret wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 8:35 pmBuy The Rumour, Sell The News.
A lot of the negatives of the short term will already be priced in with the dips we saw from the fear of war.

What would Russia potentially want that Ukraine could give them? Would Ukraine agree to give up any land?

Just possible, just possible, that one of the generals (it would have to be, as they are professional) has had the balls to explain the reality on the ground to Putin and the unreality of what he expectsBordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 9:48 pmNot sure what they could gain from them.

Course, it could just be another ploy to try to divide the international response (which is hardening by the hour)
I hope its true, because this is needs to stop as soon as possible

When he annexed Crimea, to be fair , no one gave a ****.
Don’t think the people were really bothered.
I think he thought taking Ukraine was going to be similar.
But he underestimated the peoples support for Ukraine .
And maybe the internet and the real streams we would see.

It might also be the impetus that Western Europe in particular need to make radical swift changes to their energy sources and security (which everyone knew was fragile) to ensure they're in a better position to fight back and simultaneously cut a lot of Russia's funding through buying their oil and gas, which is a high proportion of their income as they don't sell much else.Lowbankclaret wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 5:20 pmIf it goes back to normal, next will be a NATO country, I think the leaders now understand that.
They would remove them from SWIFT but the lights would go out across Europe.
Petrol already went up by 6p to 160 at my local garage.
It will have impacts here, but we need to suck it up.
The problem is Biden is worried about fuel prices increasing and upsetting the public, mid terms don't help in regard to timing, Europe as you rightly point out is worried about the the power situation, if Russia cut's the gas off then both sides suffer, clearly one immediately but the other very soon. Hence my commenting about hurting both sides if I was in the Ukraine, my plan would have been to ensure the supply was cut very early in this debacle, once I realized help beyond rhetoric was not going to be forthcoming.

Problem is if Ukraine cut the gas supply, Russia immediately get the high ground saying was their plan all along. Ukraine have to leave it open to avoid that.KateR wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 10:02 pmIt might also be the impetus that Western Europe in particular need to make radical swift changes to their energy sources and security (which everyone knew was fragile) to ensure they're in a better position to fight back and simultaneously cut a lot of Russia's funding through buying their oil and gas, which is a high proportion of their income as they don't sell much else.

I wish I could come off them all, on Facebook with family and close friends, on Instagram because I have to be, on Twitter because it's the only source of factual news (when following the right people). Also, Twitter tends to be at least an hour ahead of the TV channels !!!KateR wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 10:27 pmthanks, I don't have Twitter or Instagram, I'm on FB but more for family and storing pictures. Re: Russia Invades
Russians protesting on twitter #stop the war. Surprised Putin hasn't banned twitter yet.
#нетвойнесУкраиной #нетвойне #StopWar
Friends and mutuals from democratic countries.
Russians do not want the war! Only Putin's government wants it.
Now thousands of Russians are protesting, but our protest on the streets is brutally oppressed, and our voices are small

As sad as it is to see what’s happening, escalating it at the moment isn’t going to help.
Of course it’s quite a leap to suggest we let him start “taking” NATO countries.

we've all seen the protests and how it's being handled, they are of no consequence to Putin at this moment, he really is indestructible he thinks, hugs task to sway him from this path, just one crisis at a time, no problem they (the West) wouldn't dare go beyond posturing and a few weak sanctions.

Heartbreaking this in there will be countless acts of heroism and sacrafic made tonight. If Kyiv see's the dawn a free city it will be a monumental achievement.
But then there will be tomorrow night, and the night after that. God help them, or better and more tangible, the free countries of the world.

When Putin wakes up tomorrow and the day after he is going to see a huge force amassing on the border. Canadian's have reached Scotland, US etc all on their way. On a Friday afternoon you wouldn't typically see much US AF traffic over America.........current situation.......they are moving a lot of people, aircraft and weapons to the East Coast, already onward transports on their way to EuropeCombatClaret wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 11:19 pmGod help them, or better and more tangible, the free countries of the world.

I’ve reconsidered the decision to lock this thread and decided to re-open it. It will remain so if everyone is respectful and that means keeping the topic to one thread and with no personal posts aimed at individuals.
What happened last night was the starting of a sub-thread that shouldn’t have been which received reports that were dealt with. I was then subjected to personal comments from one poster that I found offensive.
If you see any unacceptable posts, please report them.
Thanks.

99% of people on this board are aware of what is acceptable and what is not.
Take a moment to think (and count to 10) before posting something that will either be deleted or get the thread locked, it's not rocket science.

Hopefully the anti war movement in Russia is gaining pace, talk coming out that the Russian army are uncomfortable fighting what are in essence very similar people to themselves.

I've thought that from the very beginning.
Pretty sure if it was Poland say that they were going into, it'd be more of a bloodbath and they'd have gained more ground.

Re: Russia Invades
I see Germany have finally started offering more support than just helmets ..
Interesting that they retain final say on any weapons they've manufactured and sold.
Other countries haven't been able to send things to Ukraine because Germany have refused to let them, even Finland who purchased some howitzers from someone else who'd decided to get rid of them for new stock, Germany still had final say on them.
They don't appear to be budging on anything financial though.
