Not been down there for a long long time… last time I walked over the wooden bridge it was to a breeze block changing room and Mick Doc’s office… it was just a bog with lines marked for a pitches.

Hardly anything left of the little woods in the middle of the training ground.
We used to camp out in there as kids with our 2 man tents.
These were the only goals with netting in 30 years ago so it was like playing on Wembley when we woke up.

I was down there a few times back in the old days when we used to bring youngsters down for trials, the changing facilities
we’re embarrassing to be honest especially when the kids parents came down. The toilet facilities even for the first team were appalling. I was down there one day when Adrian Heath was the Manager and he made me a brew, the first team lads had just come in from training. I had some great banter with them when they were getting changed, Hoyland was funny, the likes of Eyre’s, Paul Barnes, Weller, Marlon and Gary Parkinson were so down to earth, great lads. How those players would love the current facilities now, it looks very professional and I imagine will be a nice place to go to work.

I went round the centre on a tour by Barry Kilby and the centre manager, apperntly at least one of the pictures is a replica of the turf, as I watched the footage I reaslised it was one from the 60/70s with brown grass and standing water or at lleast I hope it is

The club reported that they were switching the sponsorship from the trading ground to the stand but then continued to refer to the training ground as Barnfield.

It's liable to be a so-called green roof and planted up with stonecrops (sedum spp.) which hold water but tolerate drought rather than grasses species. https://www.homebuilding.co.uk/advice/green-roofs

I was also impressed by the retained areas of wetland which are presumably also sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) ponds.

I like that my club has considered environmental issues in its investment discussions (although admittedly, this might also have been driven by obtaining planning consent).

Usually not grass on “turf” roofs but a plant called sedum. It’s a succulent which is very resistant to drought and can grow in virtually no soil. It’s ideal for roofs which may tend to dry out quite quickly. The colour varies depending on whether it’s in flower.

Looks like a sedum roof so that’s perfectly normal and should return to green in spring/summer.

That's interesting to know, thanks. Always been puzzled by it being brown (I used to walk along the other side of the river quite often when I lived at River Drive).

It is quite a nice sight nowadays, and must surely tick the box of many players who we approach. The floodlight ‘top pitch’ is missing from the bottom of the aerial shot, but our training facilities cover a fairly large area in total.

The green roof in this case is for ecological purposes only. The idea is that they replace the 'green' that the building's footprint removed. In other words they produce oxygen and remove CO2 like a plant would.

However the negatives are that they are heavier then a standard roof - to hold the soil and moisture - and need garden maintenance like other gardens/lawns. As a result they cost more to build and maintain. Often no consideration to access for maintenance is made.

I used to look after one or two roof gardens. One had been neglected for years and was accessible via laboratory windows which we weren't allowed to use. We had to rig up a set of ladders then climb up them with whatever tools we needed. The garden itself was supposed to be mostly ivy but there were lots of 'weeds', mostly grass. I set about removing this grass which seemed quite deep rooted. I used a fork but the soil was quite shallow and on one occasion when I pulled the fork out not only was the grass attached but so was a big piece of insulation material!

The plant used at Gawthorpe, Sedum, tolerates drought but when it's brown it doesn't photosynthesise - it's effectively dormant.

I’m not sure they’re all full size on that side? Could be wrong as that drone footage looks as though a couple of smaller ones have turned 90 degrees since the original plan. There are the pitches on the other side of the river as well; the floodlit 4G and floodlit ‘top pitch’.
