Good report Tony but I think we are done now. We've got to touching distance and bottled it too many times this season now. Just as you think we turn a corner we realise we're in a maze and it's a deD end.
I'm done with this season now sadly.

Re: REPORT: Inept performance ends in defeat at Norwich
Apart from Wednesday against Everton, every time we've gone into what you would call a really key game - and I'm thinking Newcastle, Leeds, Brentford away, we've lost them and that's what's happened again today.BabylonClaret wrote: ↑Sun Apr 10, 2022 10:01 pmGood report Tony but I think we are done now. Said the same to my Mum earlier. I’m not upset about going down. I can handle that. I’m upset at the awful football we are serving up and the fact I have to watch another 8 games of it. I wish we could end the season now & put me out of my misery.
Inept is a perfect adjective Tony.

3 games played against the 2 bottom clubs, failing to score in any of them picking up just 2 points, is a clear sign that we are unable to win the key games that really matter to guarantee safety.

We know we've got a lack of quality due to finances but very upsetting to see the lack of fight from the players today and on other occasions this season against our rivals. It's always been a hallmark of our makeup under Dyche but I've used the word bottlers after more than one game this season which I've never even contemplated before this season.
We all know about the chronic underinvestment prior to ALK arriving and the, shall we way, questionable recruitment after they arrived; but the lack of character shown by our players this season has been alarming. I'm not sure what's gone wrong in that respect.

Fair report, CT. They scored twice and in between we missed a sitter. What a difference five days makes? I don't believe they thought that they could survive 'the drop' but I firmly believe they thought they could beat us. Therein lies a major obstacle. Away from home we are what my dad used to say 'a soft touch'. Teams like that are fodder in competitive leagues. In his earlier days Sean Dyche built up a huge rapport with the supporters but currently that is disintegrating at an alarming rate right before our eyes. The end of an era? I firmly believe that to be the case now and so many different people at the club being singled out as main subjects for the supporter's vitriol.

Re: REPORT: Inept performance ends in defeat at Norwich
It is not the fact that we are going down that annoys me, it is the way we are going down that does it.
The players are mentally on the beach. They don’t care, and I don’t for one second think Dyche and his team care.
A Dyche team used to mean maximum effort but them days are long gone. We are going down with a whimper.
It is obvious that a lot of the squad don’t want to be at the club and are counting down the games until they can leave.
Norwich are a side we will be battling with next season, and I don’t think we will be finishing anywhere near them next season. They showed that they have players who despite being bottom they wanted to win the game and wanted to fight. All our players showed was that they wanted to be on a beach in southern Spain.

Re: REPORT: Inept performance ends in defeat at Norwich
A very fair report I felt for the players like Nick ,Tarks and Nathan Collins who a least put in a shift
How many times do we have to play lofted passes rather than into feet and passing then running into space .Sean knows what works and why Welsh international Roberts isn't played wide right ahead of Matt Lowton to give us an attacking option
Good as he has been Aaron Lennon can't managed two games in a week anymore.
Also this should be Ash Westwoods last start in a while,he was awful. We needed to play to feet to Wout so he could use his undoubted ability to beat an opponent. The two donkeys at the back Gibson and Handley won't have an easier game this season.Three players putting in a shift and eight passengers gets you nothing
A major tactical shift is needed for our next vital game. The glass isn't half empty yet but its wobbling

I definitely agree regarding Cornet's glaring miss. Struggling as we might have been, if he scores I'd have backed us to go on and win.

And to be petty, why not play in Claret.
Norwich played their exact same kit at Turf Moor so it's not a question of clashing.
Money of course!

Watford and Norwich at home too, key games where we were really really under par, did we manage a shot on target in either? I don't recall one.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Apr 10, 2022 10:03 pmApart from Wednesday against Everton, every time we've gone into what you would call a really key game - and I'm thinking Newcastle, Leeds, Brentford away, we've lost them and that's what's happened again today.

As poor as it was, I agree that had Cornet scored we would probably have gone on to win. I equally felt that had the clash of heads not occurred then Jay would have buried the header and a similar outcome would have transpired.

Agree re the clash of heads which laid 3 players out. Jay looked tied on to head home, but Maxwell jumped and effectively got in the way by crashing into their defender.eastanglianclaret wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 8:18 amAs poor as it was, I agree that had Cornet scored we would probably have gone on to win. Indeed since Ben went off vs Leicester the team have conceded at least two goals in those six games meaning they have to score three to win which they only managed vs Everton. The Enclosure wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 12:27 amWe really have missed Ben Mee's leadership in the last few matches.
But they have been poor up front as well with no goals in any of the other five games. A simply disastrous run of form just at the wrong time.

Burnley have failed to score goals throughout the season which is why they are currently the lowest scoring team in the PL bar bottom club Norwich.
We have also failed to win the key "6 pointers" against fellow relegation candidates. Leeds United are considered by many on here to be in danger of being dragged into a relegation dogfight but when it came to the key games against Burnley, Norwich and Watford they despatched them without too much fuss.

Spot on Kenton the last time Norwich went down Burnley took maximum points off the bottom three with an aggregate score of 12 - 0 that was just two seasons ago.

Re: REPORT: Inept performance ends in defeat at Norwich
As one Norwich fan said to me afterwards in the train station. They're still going down without a shadow of a doubt, but the drowning man just dragged someone else down with him!
And he singled out Westwood as being a very poor midfielder who either plays the easy pass backwards or at best sideways or simply lumps hopeful balls forward and he said on what he'd seen he'd never even get in the Norwich team. I couldn't argue tbf, as I myself couldn't understand why Cork wasn't playing or had a least been brought on at some stage.

Re: REPORT: Inept performance ends in defeat at Norwich
To me, many of the players looked tired/flat-footed and we missed out on soooooo many second balls because of it! I don't think for a minute that this team isn't fit, but they do look jaded.
I'd say we were second best, but I don't think we were even that good - third in a two horse race!!

Re: REPORT: Inept performance ends in defeat at Norwich
I do believe you make an excellent point re the second balls. We used to get away with being somewhat direct (hoofball?) because we were great at winning the second ball and we almost turned it into an art form. It was a real cornerstone of our success, whether people agree with it or feel it's good to watch or not . It's been noticeable all season and certainly yesterday that we're not winning any second balls these days that's when the long ball game falls down and gets exposed. It relies totally on winning the second ball and we've stopped for some reason.Dougall wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 10:29 amTo me, many of the players looked tired/flat-footed and we missed out on soooooo many second balls because of it! Re: REPORT: Inept performance ends in defeat at Norwich
None of our central midfielders even gets in the squad at any other Premier League side, never mind in the starting XI week after week. Its been obvious for the past couple of seasons where the problems in our team lie and the only steps taken to address this are to lose Hendrick (out of our hands I know) and sign Dale Stephens. The world and his wife knew how that one would pan out and to be honest has gone even worse than the most pessimistic of supporters would have forecast. And that takes some doing. It speaks volumes of the absolute state of the midfield when Jack Cork is seen as the answer to our problems. The reality is that there isn't an answer within the club and it requires and has done for some time a step change in recruitment and tactics.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 10:25 amAs one Norwich fan said to me afterwards in the train station. The only time we had a real quality central midfielder (Defour) we finished 7th.

Yesterday summed up our whole sorry season, simply not tuning up in the key games, and that's the main reason we'll be playing in the Championship next season, Norwich will almost certainly join us at that level, but of the 2 clubs they look best placed to mount a credible promotion challenge.

Yep! and he's never been replaced, hence why we lack composure in the centre of the park, and when Norwich are running rings around our midfield the alarm bells should be ringing loudly.

Re: REPORT: Inept performance ends in defeat at Norwich
We all know the issues with midfield, so do the club, it's sad that they haven't managed to find a decent midfielder, but I do believe the club have tried. In a perfect world we would have bought one 3 years ago, in the real world we get out bid, they are out of our budget or they prefer a different avenue. I think ALK would have found one this summer, they are more willing to look outside the box, and use other tools, sadly it will now be from the Championship.

Re: REPORT: Inept performance ends in defeat at Norwich
I am pretty chilled about it as we have been down for months. It is a bit frustrating g that we have got to where we are now but we have had six seasons at the top table and this had to happen sometime. We hit our ceiling in 17/18 and although we have subsequently we finished 10th that was in a very odd season. It is really difficult to maintain momentum when all you are doing year after year is trying to stay up. Sadly the new owners have brought nothing to the table, other than a sort of naive cluelessness. I must admit I found Pace’s interview around the turn of the year when he said he was not fazed by relegation truly odd. Others have observed that the difference in philosophy between Dyche and the owners has left us being neither owt nor summat. One thing you are guaranteed following the Clarets is highs and lows, let’s hope that we quickly navigate the coming lows.

What's that based on?? He's done that once (admittedly it's a great move against Utd) but teams just sit tight on him and out muscle him now - it's into his feet quite a bit and that doesn't work eitherWoodleyclaret wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 4:43 amAlso this should be Ash Westwoods last start in a while,he was awful. We needed to play to feet to Wout so he could use his undoubted ability to beat an opponent.

An emotional and good report. THe stat that I heard yesterday that stuck with me, was that this season we have only been outside the bottom three for 28 hours. It coincided with a ridicule aimed at SD who earlier in the week had said Everton had forgotton how to win. They have 8 wins compared to our 4.

Yesterday was a really poor performance, a real after the Lord Mayor’s show type affair. In the past we have been able to find something when really up against it so there is a chance we can find it again. Really need to win 4 games with a few draws and hope it’s enough. Biggest challenge we’ve had tbh.

I was at a wedding all day yesterday so haven't seen the game,or the highlights just the mangers interview and one from Brownhill.
In those they suggested we created plenty again and just didn't put them away as usual? Have to say though from reading the comments on here that certainly doesn't seem to be the case..
Looked a good one to miss I'm afraid .

Re: REPORT: Inept performance ends in defeat at Norwich
You are correct, but comments like SD's which were a "first" for him on these lines have a tendancy to be milked by the media when things go wrong. Apparently Lampard rang Dyche about the comments the day after-he is obviously feeling very smug right now after the weekends results, and could of course use it to focus the Everton team knowing we are 4 points behind, and that they could now relegate Burnley
