Burnley crest

Post by ClaretMov » Sat Apr 23, 2022 1:13 pm

Does anybody know why the Crest from 1988 to about 1994 was a different colour in parts, I noticed it today looking at old shirts

It was even a different shape a few times. Also one year just said “Burnley” on the bottom ribbon.

The top one just doesn't look right colourwise, and I notice the hand only has five fingers.

and why we changed 'Pretiumque Et Causa Laboris' to 'legs hearts and minds' (at least in most people's understanding these days) I will never know, we somehow just love to debunk tradition - though as others have said recently it was far from the only one Sean Dyche helped a generation to forget, even given the successes of his era.

interestingly that old and cherished (by some of us at least) motto seems most appropriate for the current ownership and situation - just make sure you translate it properly 'the prize and the cause of our labours'

Pretiumque Et Causa Laboris is nothing to do with the football club. It’s the old county borough motto. It was on our shirts for some years but not after around 1969 other than one season 2009/10 when we had the anniversary shirts for the 1959/60 team.

Probably either (a) just a lack of care or interest in getting it "right" by the people involved at the time - or (b) it was cheaper to embroider it with fewer colours. (I've not looked at the examples to see if that might be the case.)
Either way - back in the 80s/90s, the "club brand" didn't appear to be under any meaningful stewardship - as would be the case at many other clubs in the lower divisions.
If you think about owning a shirt 30-40 years ago, you wouldn't have many points of reference, other than programmes. So the difference wouldn't always be apparent.
Add to that, if somebody who isn't "design-oriented" at the club orders the shirts, and the teamwear/embroidery supplier aren't close to the club identity, errors like this will creep in.

Would fully support going back to the crest in the fourth post here. The current one is awful and the reasons for sticking with it are flimsy. Wouldn't be entirely against a new crest either, if it was based on the one in the fourth post here.

It's a rubbish, rubbish badge and it's a shame it's been the one we've used during all our time in the Prem, unless we stay up and Pace changes it back.

I think as a mark of gratitude to all the people from over the border who's money has kept the club alive the roses should be white.

So do I, or relatively soon. I just hope Pace takes supporters and history into consideration. Ideally we go back to the "old" one, but definitely not one of those circle ones - Man City, Stockport County, Brentford...

I grew up with the one depicted above, but I do like the fact the current badge is fairly similar to the town crest.

As for the suggestion about white roses above...

I hate it because it’s an ugly and messy design. Hope that’s a sufficient explanation for you.

I 'hate' Putin for killing civilians, and I'm 'not keen' on the current/old badge because it's not beautiful and well designed.

I am sure this crest was designed/created in the late 70’s when the club had a competition in the programme with a prize for the winning creation? I am sure Tony will know the origins of it if I am wrong. Prior to this we had a club crest in the 60’s similar to today’s. Although many clubs including big clubs just wore plain shirts no badge late 60’s including Man United, Everton and City.
When the 70’s came we just had the embroidered BFC letters on the shirt and then when we had that awful V strip we had BFC in a circle.
I have got used to our current crest now and think it works well with some away kits, especially white. I would not like us to change it if we were going to go for a nothing type badge like Fulham’s or AFC Bournemouth and several others.

I hope Pace has got more important issues on his mind than tinkering with badges. You can't change the badge every decade. It's about identity. If you keep tinkering with identity, you end up with no identity.

I’m another who thinks the current badge far superior to the old one. I love the link with the 1962 team and as a Yorkie the red rose did grate a bit! I remember Selwyn used to wear his own version with the white rose instead.
