Weghorst
Re: Weghorst
Agree, thought he was terrific. Some really good movement, particularly for the goal.
Re: Weghorst
He was dead on his feet at the finish, which isn’t surprising, given the shift he put in today.

Again he plays a huge part is creating the goal, and although he might not score many he's showing his undoubted class at vital moments.

Excellent today
Re: Weghorst
I must have been at a different game, apart from the ball he crossed for the goal I really don’t see anything in him at all, he can hardly run, he wins sod all in the air. After watching Burnley for over 60 years I have to say he’s one of the worst number 9s we’ve ever had.

Re: Weghorst
Have to say that except for a really well-worked goal, I thought the front three (Vout, Vyds and Jay) were all pretty poor today. Not one of them could make the ball stick, and though there was no shortage of effort, the number of times they gave the ball away was embarrassing.

He was fantastic in the second half, and has a bit of class about him. Lovely assist, and very nearly a similar one for Lennon.

Re: Weghorst
He certainly has his uses and can be awkward ,reads the game well, though he’s incredibly slow and seems unable to shoot while running without a heavy 2nd touch , poor in the air too for a giant . That said he’s up for it and plays for Burnley and has my total backing .

For someone so slow he does amazingly well covering in defence and closing down the opposition all over the pitch. Poorer in the air than you’d expect but compensated by having a good touch on the deck

An odd player in some ways as he’s pretty poor in the air and his physicality isn’t really that great, but his footwork and awareness really is outstanding. With these attributes, you really do wonder what on earth the scouts were communicating to Dyche, but now we’re playing it on the deck a bit more, he’s looking much more of an asset. Hard worker too. Thought he was v good today.

Anyone see him collapse to the floor at the final whistle??
He ran himself in to the ground. Top effort Wout.

Re: Weghorst
I didn’t think it was one of his better displays from an offensive perspective, barring the assist which he did well with.
He wasn’t helped by our midfield display, particularly in the first half, needing to be more focussed on their defensive duties.
Although they perhaps didn’t create the opportunities that their play deserved, Wolves certainly played the ball around very well. I’d love someone like Moutinho in our midfield.
Where Weghorst did do really well was with his work rate and defensive support. One of my biggest criticisms of Wood was that when not scoring goals, he tended to be anonymous for long periods. Weghorst may not have been at his best at his favoured end of the pitch, but he didn’t half out a shift in for the team.

He is a real curates egg of a player. Tremendous work rate and link up play but a poor header of the ball and no confidence in front of goal. Hopefully a goal or two will change that.

Re: Weghorst
I think what many forget is that Wolves have only shipped more away than City and Chelsea (and not many more). Less than a goal a game. That means strikers get suffocated. We saw that today with Dendonker and Moutinho playing very deep and a back three defending quite narrow. The space was down the channels before their wing backs tracked back, and lo and behold that was how we scored.
I thought Wout did very well in that context. We are playing to his strengths now and goals will come when he adapts to the defensive speed and solidity of this league which is way tougher than the Bundesliga.

Re: Weghorst
There were a few I could have named !
Ron Futcher had a fine career, even at 34 his touch, hold up play and distribution were a class above what we'd seen for a while .... but when you're that slow that you're nicknamed " Rocket " in the 4th tier in 1990, the thought of him transported " Star Trek " style into the 2022 Premier League doesn't bear thinking about ....

Re: Weghorst
If someone who has watched Burnley for 60 years can't understand what he brings to the team it's because he's not doing what number 9s were asked to do 60 years ago. Football has moved on a bit since then! I think he's held to a certain standard and expectation in line with his height, but you need to look at what he does with his feet because that's where he's best, and if you ignore that and expect him to play as a physically aggressive battering ram you're missing out on what he can give us. In the brain-dead generic idea of English football of yesteryear so many players his height tended to be the final man in any passage of play and that was about the extent of their involvement in the game, but he's as useful to us as a No.10, and it's great to see we're playing to that strength of his. As much as I love Dyche I'd dare say WW's quieter games with us were quiet so because he was asked to play in that old fashioned way that doesn't play to his strengths. I think Dyche saw a 6'6" footballer and decided to play to that because it worked in the past with Wood and Vokes.

Re: Weghorst
Didn’t think he was great today. But he seemed over the moon with the assist, which was very well picked out, and that shows the character of the guy - he’s a team player. Goals will come as we learn to play to his strengths, but he’s been a great addition to the team.
Re: Weghorst
He was ok today
He s different to Chris wood
He s certainly not class
At times quite a few he s for what he cost shocking
But he somehow despite his first touch assisted or major winning goal
He gives everything as they all have in the last 3 games
I love football again
Seems like a eternity since Norwich

Re: Weghorst
He probably didn't have his best game yesterday, but he popped up with a match winning assist, and that's what matters, this lad influences games in the key moments.
Will he score loads, no probably not, but he will certainly lay on goals for others, and we just look a better footballing outfit with him, in a way we didn't with Wood up front, of course it helps when we play the ball on the deck as this plays to his strengths.

Re: Weghorst
He wasn't playing that way as such though. Look at heatmaps if you don't believe me, Jay was pushed up into the Wood role and Wout playing the Jay/Barnes deeper holdup and link role. It just wasn't working as effectively because Jay isn't great in that role, and Wout is better with his feet than chest and chest than head, and our more direct play meant more aerial balls(which Jay wasn't as good as Wood at, or Wout as good as Jay at). It's the buildup play to him that's changed not his playstyle and we did that buildup with Cork in back in February, just reverted soon after (possibly also because Pieters got injured and Cornet got a knock).Spiral wrote: ↑Sun Apr 24, 2022 11:05 pmIf someone who has watched Burnley for 60 years can't understand what he brings to the team it's because he's not doing what number 9s were asked to do 60 years ago. We'd supposedly been watching him for a while and I can believe that, if he was being envisioned as a Barnes/Jay upgrade, but we'd never have signed him in January without Wood leaving- even Pace confirmed this- so even if he was on our shortlist I doubt the original plan was to bring him in in the manner that we did. I think Wout alongside Wood with our old playstyle could have been very effective, but obviously didn't happen for many reasons, primarily money I'd guess.

Re: Weghorst
Factually speaking, Wood scored 49 goals in a 149 games. A return of 3.4, which is an impressive achievement.
In 2017, he scored 10 in 24 at a rate of 2.4 goals per game to help the club achieve a seventh placed finish.
The best return a Burnley Forward has achieved in the modern era.
