Has today ruled alot of potential managers out ?

Post by s6t9a2f3f » Sun May 22, 2022 9:31 pm

I presume today hinged on what calibre of manager we could attract ? If we are going to go for a unproven Barton or Duff or ?? then no change. Probably rules out Kompany and Rooney calibre ? Interesting to see how things play out and how quickly it gets sorted.

Not sure why it would rule out Rooney who has just been managing in the championship and has been relegated to League One.

Kompany is different as he’s in the top Belgian league so will be pushing European competition.

Irrespective it’s a massive appointment and whoever comes in needs to shape a full squad and have us competing very quickly.

Yes, and I’d be pleasantly surprised if we’re any nearer to appointing one.

We needed a manager today.

We chanced it for a while but there’s a reason they pull in big bucks.

Massive blow.

Lot of suggestion at Villa last Thursday that it would be Kompany should we stay up.

I’d heard similar and the bookies seemed to follow this.

Think he’d certainly have been a name to attract some players.

Very limited options it would seem!

You just know it'll be the cheapest option so welcome Michael Jackson.

There's a reason he was managing our U23s and had failed spells in charge of lower league teams. The decision to play Collins at RB and Roberts at RW, today, for example, highlights why he's nowhere near cut out for a top job.

Would be horrified if he was given the job on a permanent basis. Absolutely horrified.

I don’t get the acceptance of Kompany link. He’s done nothing at Anderlect and it’s very very inexperienced in management and coaching. Barton and Duff have been written off for experience but arguably they’ve got more than Kompany.

I can accept the "he's done nothing part" if I take it to mean he's not got anyone promoted or anything (the opposite infact with a relegation to his name) but the "and never will" remark is a little bit petty. How do you know he will never do anything? Watford thought Sean Dyche would never do anything, as did a lot of our fans when he first signed.
I see Rooney as a manager who has brought through a large number of young players with his hands tied behind his back in the markets, has played decent football and ultimately kept the side fighting all year despite the massive point deduction.
That ticks a lot of boxes for me.
You then have a reputation in the game we've not had at the club before driving the exposure, something I'm sure the board will be interested in and potentially also a pulling interest for players.

I was told from a decent source that if we stayed up it was looking like Kompany and if we went down then we would get Wilder in.

So looks like we could be aiming at Wilder now.

Profile, character, intelligence, experience, background, record since coming into management (top 3 and cup progression)… he’s the opposite of a Wilder type appointment and would move us forward as a club, whilst acknowledging it would be a gamble.

Season starts 30th July, not a long time to appoint a manager, rebuild a squad and prepare for pre-season, which is likely to start in around 5 weeks. Needs sorting very quickly.

I reckon it’ll be an out of work manager along the lines of Farke, Mowbray or even Solskjaer.

We won’t be paying compensation for anyone.

Kompany is an odd one. He’s not exactly torn up trees in Belgium to warrant being so demanding. I am ambivalent on that, although not sure who I want.

I think id take Farke as someone who plays decent football and knows how to get promoted from the Championship.

As would I now, he has two promotions from this league. The fact he’s not done the job the level higher is a problem for the future (hopefully). He knows this league and certainly plays a different style, which is what people want.

Farke is an interesting one. At Norwich he didn’t have a lot of finance to work with but did have a good championship squad to work with

Jackson won’t get the job. I get the doomsday narrative on here, but we have to assume ALK are going to have a crack at getting back to the top table if only to protect their investment/investors.

I don’t believe the board will see Jackson as the man to entrust with that job. We may well have had a different interim manager had Jackson not pulled off those surprising initial victories. The past 4 games will have certainly ended any hope he had of the permanent gig.

I think Farke or that Knutson chap (who probably won’t come now) would be my preferred options. Or Rooney. I know a lot are against him but he knows this league, plays decent football, would attract young loan players I think and obviously has a big social media following that could help the club. Also seems to work well in adversity, which I’d say is where we are now.

Either way, we need a quick appointment. What is massively worrying for me is how he’s sacked people and then doesn’t replace them - Hart, Rigg, etc - we need this doing swiftly and planning for next season.

I thought it would be Carrick - young, profile, out of work - but that's gone quiet, if there was ever any noise at all.

For two of the reasons above I can totally see the strength in the Kompany and Rooney links.

Now, I think Farke is an interesting one. But I really think Pace wants a name.

Interesting that Watford didn’t go for a name but had to drop down the divisions for their next boss.. change in their recruitment strategy or lack of options (maybe both)

Yep. Only benefit that I can see for anyone wanting to come is they may be able to bring in their ‘own’ players with the previous squad mostly leaving.

Jackson has done an admirable job (although I think he got it badly wrong today) but if he’s our first team manager next season then we’re up **** creek without a paddle.
Is the job he’s done really that admirable? The initial ‘bounce’ seemed to owe more to the players revelling in having a bit more freedom more than anything else. The last two massively important home games, where just one win was really required, we surrendered meekly to two mid-table ‘nothing to play for’ sides with barely a whimper.

Every game of his we’ve been slow out of the blocks and taken about half an hour to get going, in the last two home games that was about half an hour too late, and the damage had been done.

Leeds are an awful side, especially poor under their new guy, but they at least wanted it yesterday. I still can’t believe how lack lustre we were in a game of such importance. And that’s the hardest thing for me to accept. The complete lack of fire from the players yesterday is utterly unfathomable. Jackson has to take most of the responsibility for that.

I really don’t want him to continue in the role, and wouldn’t be bothered if he was relieved of his duties at the club altogether. He got given a golden chance on the big stage to show his ability, but ultimately didn’t, or couldn’t, take it. Thanks, but no thanks.

As for Alan Pace, he took a chance, and he also failed. What he does now is anybody’s guess. Maybe he can fix this, or maybe it isn’t recoverable, and he was ‘all in’ on that gamble. Either way he needs to communicate to the fans, and do it quickly and honestly, because everyone is pretty low on faith at the moment. No more platitudes, we need answers, and we need them now.

I think Mike Jackson got it wrong tactically today but it was the players that simply didn’t turn up when it mattered……something that has been a constant thread throughout this season.

What Mike Jackson did do was he gave us some hope, he took what was seemingly a lost cause and gave us a chance.

Ultimately it wasn’t to be but he’s certainly not the one we should be pointing fingers at this morning.

We now need to get the next man in quickly and let the rebuilding commence. Whilst I’d have preferred us to stay up, regardless of which division we are in this is the first summer I’ve looked forward to in years. We are going to see a lot of change and a new direction. I for one am intrigued to see where it takes us.

I'd have taken Rooney had we stayed up, because in that league we had to 'gamble'. However in the position we now find ourselves we need someone who already has the formula, Farke or Wilder seem like the best options.

I'm not au fait with European football but has he taken the Belgian league by storm. Is it a top league?
It's not, and he hasn't.

Whoever it is, they need to be appointed asap and need the backing of everyone.

My contact at the religious outpost on belvedere rd has had a revelation and John Herdsman will be confirmed as manager by the end of the week.
