No reason to assume either way. Barnes wasn’t the same as Cork, for instance.

It would surprise me. No chance we'd sell him to Newcastle for that.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 1:53 pmThat wouldn’t surprise me tbh. It’s pretty much the going rate for a keeper over 30

Turned 30 literally less than 2 months ago, he's hardly ancient! We sold Tom Heaton who was largely seen as our Number 2 (once Pope was to return to fitness) at 33 years old for £8m to a club that wasn't one of the richest in the world also. Records are there to be broken r.e costs for 'over 30's' players - let's not forget we got £25m for a 31 year old, out of form Chris Wood from...Newcastle United (release clause or not, it happened, they paid it).Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 1:53 pmThat wouldn’t surprise me tbh. We must sell him for a large amount of reasons but I don't think we are going to be pushovers in terms of the transfer amount.

Yes, but the Premier league record for a keeper thirty or over is 16m.jedi_master wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 2:03 pmTurned 30 literally less than 2 months ago, he's hardly ancient! Also Newcastle look to be Popes only hope of a premier league return.
What do you think they are realistically going to bid? I can’t see them doubling the premier league record?

Pace won't give him away, he's a money man
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
The point you’re missing is Newcastle hold all the cards in this deal. They have all the leverage. There is not one other PL club who is in for Pope, so we either sell to them or no one. If we need the funds for the rebuild / pay debts then we are in a weak selling position. That likely means a heavily reduced fee.jedi_master wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 2:03 pmWe must sell him for a large amount of reasons but I don't think we are going to be pushovers in terms of the transfer amount.

Also between now & 1st September a goalie may get injured, that will alter things

They may well start with a low-ball (£10-15m), but I'd be beyond stunned if a club like Newcastle could not be pushed up past £20m, especially if Pope's additional year is in our favour which may well be crucial. I will assume it is rather than isn't.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 2:06 pmYes, but the Premier league record for a keeper thirty or over is 16m.

I think it's an utter irrelevance what the record for an over 30's keeper in the Premier League is historically, it's only a record till it's broken. Pope is at the top of his game, well regarded, and Newcastle United are one of the richest clubs in the world. Whilst we are probably keen to sell to help swell Vincent's coffers (and to get a keeper in who can build from the back, if Hennessey cannot), we don't know how desperate we are to sell following the refinancing/loan deferral's done by Pace also so can probably play chicken a little.

30 years of age and an England international?>
And he's only worth £10 million?

Southampton are paying 12 million for Bazunu, a player with 0 PL apps. Pope should cost at least twice as much.

Well, I'm expecting Pope to go due to the World cup but not for £10mill.
I'm also expecting Cornet to go and Weghurst, that will drop the wage bill.
I would be surprised if nobody makes a cheeky did for McNeil due to his age and games played in the prem.
I do hope we keep Collins, but worried about the so called £25mill release fee, if so will need a new contract soon.
Not sure Cork will sign, if someone fancies his experience

I could see 20m happening but I suspect that would be the absolute max. That would break the record in the prem and make him the second most expensive keeper in history over 30.jedi_master wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 2:16 pmThey may well start with a low-ball (£10-15m), but I'd be beyond stunned if a club like Newcastle could not be pushed up past £20m, especially if Pope's additional year is in our favour which may well be crucial. Tarkowski to Everton looks done. However it’s suggested it may not be announced until the official end of his contract at the end of the month, due to strained relations between the two clubs.

Simon Jones generally decent reporting - just adds a bit more to the Pope story.
Firstly, Newcastle are looking for a keeper deal for a low initial fee, as they need to ensure they fall in line with FFP.
This suggests below 20m to me.
Secondly, it’s believed their coaches feel they can improve Pope’s distribution.

Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Well it says they have been looking at loan options for a start. That suggests they want to spend as little as possible on a keeper. And as for reasons I’ve highlighted earlier, I’d be very surprised if we get over £20m with only one club in.
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
It says loan options OR a low initial fee. The latter doesn't mean a low overall few. Around £20m is probably about right but I was just curious how you thought that article supported such a view, rather than just knowing what your view is. Time will tell I suppose.

Kompany said in his club interview part 1 that he has been allowed to bring some great people with him. I also suspect he will have known who is going and who’s staying prior to agreeing his contract. Not sure who was the interviewer but who’re the it was had no clue about football. Kompany nearly choked when the guy asked if had considered playing again !!!

Id imagine he will be a ball playing cb too given the City upbringing and involvement with Swansea (possession based team).

Just had a quick look at some of the u23/u21s from City from the last couple of years when Kompany was there.
Seems like they nearly all were loaned out to Belgian or Dutch football quite young, presumably to build possession based skills.
