Newcastle agreed fee for Pope
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
If I was forced to pick one of our best players to leave, it would be Pope. I just hope we haven't had our pants pulled down and given a seeing-to without lube.
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Maybe this Pope sale will help trigger some of the initial signings of Twine, McNally and Wallace (signing on fee).
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Watching the Geordies meltdown on Twitter about Pope is amusing. Such a bipolar lot. About half of them think Pope is rubbish and they can do better (with Henderson of all keepers); the other half think they're stealing the best keeper in history...
The truth is clearly somewhere in between. I wish Pope all the best, just wish he wasn't going there for blood money, but that's not his problem is it.

Best goalkeeper I’ve ever seen for us, same for my Dad who’s watched us since the late 60’s. A sad day, but as said further up, weirdly he is the player I’m most ‘Ok’ to sell (barring good old Wout, obviously).

Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Pope did not distinguish himself at Newcastle in December, a costly mistake coming for a ball and not making/taking it. Nevertheless a good keeper who saved our bacon on several occasions.
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
What was your favourite Pope save? Been a few.
Actually think mine was his recent one at Villa from the Traore header. Had no right to save that!

If a fee has been agreed this quickly, that does rather suggest we've got what we wanted

Again we are far betting at giving players away than signing them
A very sad day ,so much for not needing to sell following relegation

Fingers crossed, but it seems it was also suggested that Newcastle were not messing about and they were quickly prepared to move onto other targets if progress wasn't made quickly.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 5:10 pmIf a fee has been agreed this quickly, that does rather suggest we've got what we wanted

Newcastle fans are suggesting £8-£10 mill for Pope, which feels a little bit on the low side?

They'll just be reading copied reports that gave that figure, which sounded like someone had thrown a couple of darts at a dartboard and came up with 8-10.burnleymik wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 5:16 pmNewcastle fans are suggesting £8-£10 mill for Pope, which feels a little bit on the low side?

Having two years left with the added option I hope this means a big fee. An extra £10m would make a lot of difference to what the club has to spend.
A shame Nick made a crucial error in his final game, that misjudged corner he flicked on that if Collins hadn’t punched would have been headed back across goal. He had a great season, but not against them.

Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I’d already got used to the idea that Pope was leaving. Just hope we got some good cash. We have 2 decent keepers ready to step in so it’s not desperate times.
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Yup me too. If we can rake in 50-60m from Pope, Cornet and Collins I’d say fine. Even if just 20m of that gets re invested and the rest goes towards paying off Collins/Cornet transfer debt and MSD, fine, 20m is a fair bit at this level.
In terms of keepers, I’d imagine VK will want a new ball playing keeper.

VK might feel differently but my preference is one who keeps the ball out of our net, the rest is secondary to me.

It’s a simple game isn’t it - the positions sort of suggest what the role is. Goal keeper being a prime example.
There aren’t that many keepers that truly look comfortable with receiving and passing the ball. For me, playing it out from the back doesn’t necessarily need a great ball playing keeper, it needs someone who can distribute it quickly and accurately - two similar but different things.
Going back to Pope - I wish he was off somewhere other than Newcastle but wish him all the best. Top, top goalkeeper even if he’s not the best at the modern day fancy shite.
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Find it strange (well in truth I don’t, as it’s expected) that arguably the best keeper most of us have ever seen playing for the club, who has saved us countless times making ridiculous saves that he shouldn’t, still has a few minor errors highlighted on here as opposed to simply saying thank you and good luck to an outstanding player for our club.

I think we should do everything in our power to keep Collins ! That handball to one side I can see the emergence of a very special player but of course I could be miles off

My issue is he is still an inexperienced player and looking at who has left the club and the ages of some of the rumoured players coming into to replace them, it is a big ask to expect him to lead others. This is where the loss of Ben Mee is so pivotal.SmudgetheClaret wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 5:37 pmI think we should do everything in our power to keep Collins ! The nearest youngster that I’ve seen performing to such levels, at such a young age for Burnley, was Gary Cahill.
I can see him being better than Tarkowski and playing at the highest level. Time will tell.

Newcastle Evening Chronicle says Pope price around £15 million including a number of add-ons. Said Burnley demanded £40 million initially.

RVclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 12:00 pmHave you considered that Pope wants to stay in the PL and, let’s be honest, absolutely deserves to be there? I think after what he has done for us, we owe him some goodwill on dealing at a lower number than perhaps we’d want. I’ve explained countless times on this thread that this deal was in Newcastle’s favour and every time got shot down.
We owe him nothing his salary covers goodwill and more besides. We should tout him around and get the best possible fee

Been through this many times already. Every other club in the league that may be an option have signed a keeper or close to signing a keeper.

Seems about par. Would be interesting to know that the add ins are. Probably puts him in the top 5 fees paid for British GKs.forzagranata wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 5:47 pmNewcastle Evening Chronicle says Pope price around £15 million including a number of add-ons. Reading all those reports - a fair guess would be 10-12 million fee plus lots of things to be paid if they get into Champions League, win PL, etc etc - a bargain for a keeper that must be rated around 20-25 million.

Boils my **** players who think they are far to good for the championship, they should all have a good look at themselves because they weren’t good enough for the premier league last season or we would still be there.

So the asset stripping theorists were correct after all. Some serious incoming action is needed after a dark day selling our best keeper in years.
