Bardsley

Post by claretwardy88 » Wed Jul 06, 2022 8:55 am

Phil on talk sport most of this morning. Talking about how he felt undervalued with not been told he wasn't being retained until late on. Speaks highly of the club but it does seem odd.

In the club's defence, surely they were waiting for the new manager situation to be all sealed before they made a final decision on the players they were planning on letting go?

Similar to Dale Stephens then, and communication doesn't seem great from the club does it.

I thought we might have kept Bardsley on in a coaching role, but I guess Kompany wants to bring in his own staff.

As well as which division we would be in which unusually went down to the last day.

When a player is after a pay rise they hide behind the "I leave all that to my agent" stance perhaps they should ask their agent to do some work when it comes to being released or a new deal

I assumed he was going to retire this summer and I've had that assumption since last summer....

I certainly never expected him to stay once we signed Roberts and still had Lowton.

What's wrong with some of these players?

Probably. It wasn’t exactly unusual under the previous regime to extend contracts of the creaky knees. It’s why we ended up in the position we were in.

Of course, he knew he's 37 but that's not the point.

He said he enjoyed the club - got on well with the players/owners but there was a lack of professionalism. Not clear whether just related to this issue or otherwise.

He didn't seek to criticise the club - he was played the Dale Stephens interview.

Gabby Agbonlahor pointed out out that players are often accused of a lack of loyalty and clearly fans are not much better.

A simple telephone call would have stopped players going onto the national media and criticising the club and the owners.

And given there was potentially 7 or 8 of them it must have struck someone there was a potential for bad PR.

The op says Phil felt under valued due to being told late on, so he was told?

I take this as the club needed to know more about which league and under what management before informing these players?

We can't really argue against that.

Of course if they weren't informed then I would agree, a bit of common courtesy should of been afforded.

Totally agree. He did not start a single PL game last season, drawn a good salary for 5 years and aged 37. Its disappointing to go public.Lets see how in demand he is from other clubs as a player. It must have hurt his wife that she could not announce on twitter that her dear Phil had secured another contract

Didn't Mrs Bardsley tweet Phil's farewells very soon after the final game?

I wonder whether one or two of the 30+ year olds were hoping to "slip under the radar" and pick up a new contract while the club was busy appointing a new manager?

I can only imagine that there were either some crossed wires where the club thought it had been agreed with Sean that the older players not playing games would leave and assumed he’d passed it on, or more likely a delay in making the decisions because we didn’t know what league we’d be in or have a manager confirmed - it’s pretty obvious that we’d have a completely different wage budget in the event of relegation.

To be honest, I find it odd that such experienced players can’t evaluate and understand the circumstances, such that they don’t get offended or feel undervalued. Or just ask their agents to reach out and start dialogue with the club so they know their stance? That is surely their job and what they get paid to do.

I don't get this. The players had signed contracts. They knew the end dates in those contracts. They also knew how old they would be at the end of their contract when they signed their contracts. It's all sorted when those contracts were signed. No need for the club to say anything.

There is no need, you are right. Maybe the fact that the club has said something, has been proactive in communicating to the players, is part of why the togetherness and feel around the club was so strong? Maybe it doesn't matter any more, as we're just doing what every other club does.

On the 23rd May, a few days after the Newcastle game, Tanya Bardsley confirmed it was their last day at the club and thanked everyone on her Instagram. Phil is now saying he wasn’t aware he was being released until the retained list came out (weeks later) and it got posted in their WhatsApp group? Doesn’t make sense.

Disagree. I think it's good for the club to communicate in these circumstances. There's nothing lost in doing so and it demonstrates good values and togetherness which has underpinned the club's successes. Not a massive
deal in the grand scheme of things though.

The guy who would communicate with the players is the manager/coach. Sean Dyche left at the beginning of April. Mike Jackson led the team for the last few games on a temp basis. The club was in the process of appointing a new manager. Tarks, who'd captained the team for the last few games had announced he was leaving when his contract ended. Ben Mee, club captain, was no doubt busy looking for his next Premier League club (have we heard anything on this, btw?). Nick Pope has gone to NUFC. And, I'm guessing that all the remaining players were off on holiday - or international games - the morning after the last game.

I thought that CEO's / Directors of football were the people who discussed contracts, not managers. 2 players have now said they are disappointed with the communications, and you're still unwilling to accept maybe something wasn't done right? For the last 10 years, the club has done things more right than the vast majority of other clubs in the country.... in all areas. Now, we're hearing of people involved, thinking things aren't being done right, and in my opinion, it's rightly being seen as concerning by some.

Agreed, but I think the issue is also people on here misrepresenting what former players said, or what they clearly intended to say to make cheap points.

These players employ agents to sort contracts for them and get them these big paydays so I don't really see it as a club problem especially when so much is up in the air regarding league status and management team, it's more a failure of their agents in not finding out if a new contract will be offered and if not finding the player a contract elsewhere. instead of saying the club didnt or were slow in letting them know they wouldnt be getting a new deal at 35+yrs of age maybe they should be asking questions of their agent as to why they haven't sorted it out.

Hold on, his missus said they were leaving not long after the season ended? I remember because everybody was criticising the club then too. Does Phil not talk to his wife? Or his agent? Or anybody. What I think is TalkSport have got an 'angle' after Stephens bleating the other day and they're getting some mileage out of it. It's all a bit of a nonsense.

TalkSport are great at this. Sensationalist headlines and people jump on it without having any ability to see through it and ask questions. I’m already seeing it on socials ‘this is terrible by the club’ and of course by the usuals on here.

He may have been offered a short term contract under the previous management but chose instead to join Rooney at Derby as a player/coach.. with our change of management and the Derby opportunity up in smoke, maybe he's left without options and feels a tadge bitter.
I don't buy all this only finding out when the retained list was announced when agents and spouses knew ages ago.

It was strongly rumoured that he would be joining his mate Rooney at Derby, now that’s gone t1ts up , he is searching for another club. So appears like he is after the publicity . Shame I really liked everything about him as a player.

As I said the issue is the constant misrepresenting of what former players said or making unjustified comments on a public forum.

He was played Dale Stephens clip and was not a tad bitter - he was complimentary about the club AND THE OWNERS but expressed surprise that after 5 years there was no communication from the club at the end.

The only people being disingenuous are on this forum!

Pete - how do you explain his wife knowing he was leaving on the 23rd May and making a public post about it, only for him to claim he only knew about it through a WhatsApp group when the retained list came out?

Not surprised Bardsley is complimentary about the club. I doubt if any other PL club, including those recently relegated, would have extended his fourth or fifth year of his contract. And as for his last season, circa £1.5m for someone aged 37 who did not start a PL game ain't too bad. Lets get the club to send him a personally AP signed post card if that makes him feel better
