What, exactly, was expected from him?
Was he expected to be a marauding left back/wing back?
Was he meant to be defensively solid?
Have people's views of him been spoiled after watching full backs like Reece James who had 9 assists last season to Taylor's 3?
Or Robertson who had 10 assists?
There aren't many defenders with more assists than Taylor last season.

He provided the most assists last season out of all of our defenders and was joint top at the club along with Brownhill, Westwood, WW and Vydra.

8th on the dispossessed
4th most chances created, behind McNeil, Brownhill and Westwood.

He often had his best games when the man in front of him was also playing well and last I checked there had been a dip in form of the men in front of him so he had to check his forward runs as a result.

Taylor is a solid performer for us, ratings averaged 6-7 like the rest of the defence and he chipped in with attacking play where he could.

Now the narrative is being switched to how he hasn't developed, isn't good enough etc ...seems a bit harsh when we look at the stats

I just remember us leaking goals down his side constantly, all season long. He was really poor imo, I thought he'd be pushing for an England place, he's miles away from that based on last season.

The defence weren’t poor last season. The MF in front of them are down a level from what we had then and the strike force were on strike, a shambles.

I agree-generally defence very good. Not looked at the stats but not many PL clubs will have been relegated with less GOALS AGAINST than us. When you see Collins was one of our top scorers if you take out Cornet, that tells you everything

I agree. I do think we oddly played better with Pieters because of how his different style changed our shape & approach, but Taylor is clearly a good player who has often had bad luck with injuries when going on a run of form, and one I'd expect to tear up the Championship. Would not want to lose him.

Personally think Chaz is overrated.

Doesn’t stay tight to his man and is another that can’t make simple passes into midfield efficiently or to another centre half because of his one footedness.

At his best he was good for Burnley - glimpses like the cross for the goal at Watford but all in all I wouldn’t be too bothered if he left.

Our defence was far from poor, but that has to be tempered with the fact that Pope was an absolute world beater on occasions and we sacrificed a lot going forward to keep things tight at the back for large parts of the season. I think the defenders we have brought in so far are exciting footballers for decent money, but I would be a lot more comfortable if Ben Mee was still in the squad for some well needed experience at this level, dressing room presence and leadership.

It always seems to get ignored that in the season we finished 7th we were hardly prolific in scoring goals. Arguably one of the lowest ever scoring teams to qualify for Europe.

That season we got very lucky. It was the same as all the other Dyche seasons, tactically style etc just that we were on the end of some very fortunate close victories/draws instead of defeats added to the fact that most teams in the league seemed to be in transition.

Taylor has never really produced the form and skill he showed for Leeds, mainly because we don't play the same style or formation, that Leeds did.
Just like every other player in the squad, VK will hopefully play a style and formation , that allows Charlie to be unfettered, and we'll see the player we thought we'd bought.

agree, Taylor fell asleep so many times but wasn't helped by those in front. His End product the other way leaves a lot to be desired for someone playing at such a high level. That said I would expect him to **** the championship

You are correct that we conceded far too many down that flank, inc. all 3 goals that cost us 5 points in our first two home games. They were not necessarily down to Charlie. Far too often he became the third CB and allowed a MF or Dwight to be the FB. I’ve played holy hell about this on here regularly. The only defender I want to see against a tricky wide man is our FB. Lowton and Taylor are excellent defensively and well off PL quality attacking. It could end up that neither off them start this year but we live in interesting times.

You’re right, Taylor certainly didn’t hit the heights of previous seasons last year. His pace is a superb asset for him and he is rarely beaten on 1v1’s.

However, listening to Coventry fans it sounds like Maatsen is very good going forward but also very suspect when defending. That said, I think regardless of the formation Kompany plays it sounds like he likes his full backs to play very high up and offer the width when attacking. Therefore, this could suit both Taylor and Maatsen.

You conveniently leave out that he was absolute pants in the Premier League, scoring 3 goals in 42 games, and he only scored 15 in the Championship the season before last.

They retained him because nobody wanted him, and hot lucky that he came good last season.
