He’s a winger, not a striker. Goal contribution (goal or assist) at under 1 in 2 last season. Reports linking him this summer with Schalke, Lyon and Marseille:

https://www.dhnet.be/sports/football/di ... 2GW4ZTY6M/

Admittedly, I’ve never seen him play but at least let’s present some balance rather than KRBFC’s ‘he’s shite and cheap’, or that it’s ‘only Kompany who wants him and therefore crap’ insinuation.
Well hang on a sec, I think both of those are a bit unfair

I'm sceptical that KRBFC has seen him play or knows anything about him, but he's entitled to his opinion on it

My comment on VK was mainly to do with his inexperience of the championship, and that maybe this isn't the sort of player that would be too much of a gamble

Ash is going to bag 20 easily (apparently).
If we're relying on Ash to bag 20 we're doomed to disappointment, I'll be happy if he and Jay hit double figures.

I would have Ash down for 6-8 goals, anyone who expects him to get 20 is going to be spending a lot of this season in shock.

Although not as much as I would be if he notched 20

Barnes will be out of the team when we sign a new striker and I’m hoping Richardson is also utilised ahead of him when he gets match fit. I would be amazed if he gets close to 10 goals.

I actually agree with KRBFC for once, even if he is not very eloquent at describing his views... We do seem to be going for cheaper options which never ends well...

I'm very nervous about our central defence as well, so close to our first game with some players not really featuring in pre-season friendlies and also being very young... I want to see an absolute beat at centre half and/or with a lot more experience than we have already purchased...

I am also not impressed at all with the calibre of pre-season matches we have had... I can see us being very undercooked for the start of the season and it doesn't take very long for players to lose confidence after a few initial defeats.

I’d rather buy 4 decent players than 10 crap players

VK keeps going on about needing a big squad - which I do agree with and it seems that he’s the type to use all five substitutes and have a lot of contributors in the squad…

That being said, it’s no good buying a load of guff. I’ve been less than impressed with some of the players linked and one or two that we’ve signed

With that being said I’ll obviously reserve total judgement till we’ve played a few games

In fairness to Barnes, and yes it was Shrewsbury Town in a friendly - he looked quite good dropping deep and collecting the ball to lay off to runners.

Not saying he’ll botch loads himself like, but he didn’t look lost in Kompany’s system.

If we are selling Cornet, I want a proven ready to go replacement, not some £2m punt on an average Belgian league player because we were too cheapskate to reinvest properly. If that makes me deluded, so be it.

Well as it stands, if we’ve signed CJ/McNally to start then them two - we’ve dipped a division and looking to go back up or at least be in and involved with it and one of them is super super raw and coming from league one and the other has only played a handful of games and this may sound harsh, but looks a bit ‘under developed’ - especially for a centre half /full back.

Totally agree - there’s a bit of a ‘moneyball’ vibe about it thinking we’re gonna unearth gem after gem. Some be in for a shock I think. Hoping it comes off mind.

Thanks for the comments Paul Waine

Just noticed the Foe option - that’s a bonus !

Again, not a contributor but reader of this forum over a long period I thought why not join in but it just turns me off completely when threads descend into nit picking name calling and down right abuse - god knows how Tony and the mods put up with it !

We are all Clarets (some clearly not) let’s discuss and support our team without being childish.

Because he’s played 30 games in league 1 - prior to that was playing in Ireland and by all accounts from Oxford fans he’s very raw but has potential (which is great, just not sure I want that from my starting centre half right now).

Tarky in comparison had played 70 games for Oldham then 70 for Brentford, establishing himself as a top young centre half in the Champ… & he came in to be third choice.

On this point I agree, if Cornet does go, which I expect he will, then we'll need O'Hare or someone of that ilk to come straight in make an instant impact.

O'Hare
A striker who is proven at this level
And a CB with more experience.

Get all 3 of them through the door, and suddenly we'll have the basis of a decent side.

With a 46 game league season plus our cup runs(?) we will need the 5 subs per game. Eventually the cream will rise to the top and we will find our starting X1.

How much were people expecting us to spend?

I keep seeing claims we've gone with cheap options, but we've had a lot go out the door and if fans are expecting a minimum amount spent on each replacement we'd never be able to afford it ..

Well judging by tiger and KRBFC’s list, there’s probably around 30m there.

O’Hare 10m
‘Proven scorer at this level’ 10-15m
Cb with experience 5m

+ bigger agent fees as they are bigger deals

Its going to take time, the "old" Burnley of the last 6-7 years have been ripped apart there's hardly anything left of it and that was a DNA that has worked so successfully for us. Now its new owners, new manager who's never managed in england thus not in championship, new coaches, 8-9 players out, 8-9 players in, new recruitment team, new recruitment approach, new playing style, new tatics, new formation virtually "a new club". On top of that tackling a totally different league for the 1st time in 5-6 years - it will take time.

I’d have Gary Cahill on a free for a season no problem.

Bloke is ultra fit and would be incredible to bring the youth up to speed.

I’d prefer to start him first game as well.

Is Mepham even available and for that fee? Bournemouth only have him, Hill and Kelly as their CB options, so that seems unrealistic?

Southampton have like 3 strikers, doubt they will let Armstrong out at this stage, and if they do he’ll unlikely choose to come to us (Blackburn connections)?

Yes, or Ben Foster.

The ages and likely high wages don’t fit our business model however, rightly or wrongly.

Cahill is a name that came to my mind as well if we want someone to organise our youthful defence, yes he's 36, but on a free, and at a reasonable wage he could be invaluable on and off the pitch.

I fully understand the need to prioritise younger signings, however CB is the one area you'd ideally want an older head.

Could he be tempted back north, I have no idea, but as a short-term option we could do a lot worse in my view.

If we did spend that it’s just the profit we have made in the last window and this window.

But right now I would happy selling cornet and re investing 20m in to the squad on two proven talents.

I agree we have signed some good prospects but we do need to start signing some ready to go players.

What makes you think Cahill would demand high wages, he's presently without a club, and we can offer him regular footy at a decent level, which at this stage of his career not many others will.

If Ben Mee was not offered a deal for the purposes mentioned above cant see why Cahill would be ? Mee was Burnley through and through and unlike Cahill as we speak has found a deal with a Prem club so it cant be because he was still not good enough - even if Mee picked up 1-2 knocks as per last season was good around the club and was in Jacksons set up for those few matches at the end.

both THB and CJER have both played at least a full season in the Championship, they've also been training with some incredible footballers the likes of which we could only dream of seeing in a Burnley shirt. It will take time but we'll be reet. Look at the teams who have recent promotions out of the Championship, all play football on the deck.

Do ultra fit that injuries kept him out at Bournemouth since January. Top, top player but that’s in the past.

I personally think we need at least 1 CB (with experience), 2 x wingers (advanced Midfielders if cornet and McNeil go), 2 strikers.

Strikers are critical at this point. Struggling to see where the goals are going to come from at the moment.
Would agree entirely with this.
Raw defences that haven't played together tend to need experienced heads to help out- McGreal did wonders for Cahill.
We're desperately short on wide men.
Jay and even Barnes should do better in the Championship but there's still precious little to suggest they still have enough left to get us to promotion contention, and even then we'd need extra forwards with a 4222 as we'd have little in the way of options/backup.

Do ultra fit that injuries kept him out at Bournemouth since January. Top, top player but that’s in the past.
Fair comment - still think he’d be great in and around the squad

Oh and Vegas, CJ has played the grand total of one senior game of mens footy

If Ben Mee was not offered a deal for the purposes mentioned above cant see why Cahill would be ? Mee was Burnley through and through and unlike Cahill as we speak has found a deal with a Prem club so it cant be because he was still not good enough - even if Mee picked up 1-2 knocks as per last season was good around the club and was in Jacksons set up for those few matches at the end.
You may well be correct, the Ben Mee situation is mysterious, do we even know if he was offered a contract, either way our central defence looks severely lacking in experience, which may explain why Taylor played there in one of the friendlies.

I was reliably told that Mee was offered a 1 year deal.

Going back to Cahill, there are various figures given for his weekly salary. The highest being £75K per week.

Cheers for the info, explains why Mee decided to try his luck elsewhere, however I can also understand why we only offered him 1 year.

If Cahill was on anything near 75k a week at Bournemouth that just shows how bonkers football has become.

both THB and CJER have both played at least a full season in the Championship,
Not sure where you have seen that about CJER? He played 3 games for City, one as a sub appearance again Newcastle in May, one Champions League appearance in March and started EFL Cup game last September against Wycombe, that is his whole footballing career to date.

Not knocking the lad as who knows he could come good and was thought of well at City, but definitely a raw, inexperienced young player (which could well benefit him, no bad habits, no fear etc).

Just catching up with all transfer rumours.

Does anyone remember the mb in previous transfer windows? I think we were all calling for the club to look to bring in players from various European leagues, because they didn't cost as much. Looks like we are doing that, using Vincent Kompany's knowledge of Belgian league, plus using VK's links and knowledge of his old club, Man City. That all sounds like great business to me.

Re Ben Mee: the club offered him a new contract, but Ben also knew that he could get a better contract and continue his career with a club in the Premier League. Did any of us think he was ready to turn his back on the Premier League and more money that Burnley could afford to offer?

How does Everton signing a defender rule them out of signing Cornet, a winger / forward?

According to Portuguese newspaper Record in its print edition [26 July, pg. 9], the Merseyside club are prepared to cover the 23-year-old’s £680,000-a-week salary as they look to bring the former Wolves man to Goodison Park.

:D :D I reckon they will be screwed by FFP paying that wage

Other sources suggest he's on £680k per year, not £680k per week. :o

Then change Mepham to Gary Cahill on a free transfer. I throw a few names out and you take it quite literally and start arguing tiny variables, just examples.

I am guessing because from reading the local papers they are all saying Everton will be playing with a back 3 and then wing backs, now I assume they are then expecting Cornet to be the left wing back in that formation.

Don't know I'd thats right or wrong, just guessing that is how reporters are viewing it and their chase of Cornet
