If we are talking of family tales I was told by my mother that Boleyn is the French version of Bullen, my surname.... Anne Boleyn! Her daughter became Elizabeth I (I worked at Queen Elizabeth School at one point). Now I can't claim to be a descendent of royalty because Queen Elizabeth didn't have any children. Of course I could have come from some ******* child of Anne's sister Mary, who was one of Henry VIII's mistresses.

Didn't know your Uncle but new Winston Place who is mentioned in the article, as I grew up on Queens Square in the 60s and used to visit his shop. Winston had a daughter who I still see out and about she must now be in her 80s and was and still is a very attractive Lady

My Dad would always pop into Winston's shop when we were up from Derbyshire in the 60s. He was a really nice man.
I didn't know his Daughter but, met her at my Aunt's funeral about 20 years ago. My mum recognised her.
Nice to hear she's still going strong.

There was and probably still is a picture and potted history of him in the Wetherspoon's in Todmorden Town Centre, along with other Todmorden illumini such as Jon Helliwell from Supertramp, Keith Emerson from ELP, band leader Geoff Love and afew others.

Alice Nutter

Something to be proud of… and a shared relation.

Alice was both an educated Catholic and a business women and multiple property owner. The rumours started about Alice because a chancer thought he could inherit her fortune by marrying her… when she refused he was the first to accuse Alice of being a witch.

She’s buried in Newchurch in Pendle along with (much later) William Darney, who is now virtually forgotten but who was a vital member of the first Methodist hierarchy; and lived for a time with John Maden in Waterfoot where the Wesley’s visited him often. He died in Roughlee, where he had moved a couple of years earlier.

Far too young to meet him sadly as I’m 35! He was my Dad’s Grandad’s Cousin (whatever that makes him to me!). Very interesting to read about, particularly ‘Cockcroft’s Folly’ which was vital in saving lives from exposure to nuclear fumes (filtering on the power station chimneys).

I had heard that after the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that the hypothetical question of ‘what have we done’ was something he was considering to his friends/colleagues and family.

I was on a London tourist bus years ago. There was a running commentary and he made the same mistake - 'this is where Sir John Peel, founder of the police, lived'. Immediately an American in a broad yankee accent said -you mean Sir Robert Peel surely'.
