Some interesting comments from Connor Roberts so far
"I think if you've noticed, I'm playing a slightly different role. I'm enjoying it and all I can do is what the manager and coaches ask - the feedback is positive.
The style is what I am used to before I came to Burnley
When I played for Swansea and Wales I was a wing back, I am being asked to a different role but I am enjoying it.
You see the fans moaning and groaning a little bit because it's something they are not used to.
It is nicer to have the ball and even when results don't go your way you feel a sense of enjoyment and freedom to express yourself and enjoy the play”

How embarrassing that a player comments on fans moaning and groaning for maintaining possession.

Bloody hell, if the same was being asked of him at Swansea, even more reason that he should be performing far better than he is doing.
For me, he needs bit more composure in his play.

He didn’t say that. He said he’s being asked to do a different role to before when he was mainly a wing back (like Maatsen has been for us) something I’ve highlighted many times on here.
Personally think he’s been fine but is clearly learning this new role - room for improvement.

I think fans moaning and groaning are doing so as the early results have not been overly positive, rather than due to a preference for direct/long ball football and pragmatism. Burnley fans have been used to a period of huge success under Sean Dyche, particularly at the level we now find ourselves. It will take many time to adjust from going 23 games unbeaten, losing 10 games in our last 92 at this level and two automatic promotions to a period of possible consolidation. To suggest that moaning and groaning is occurring as fans are not used to/don’t like ‘good’ football is a fallacy. I think if you asked most Burnley fans which season they’ve enjoyed our style in the last two decades, the lions share would pick the 08/09 swashbucklers under Owen Coyle. He may be merely referencing the Muric stuff, which is a different kettle of fish as that is VERY different to anything seen at Turf Moor, undoubtedly.
My own opinion is that the tempo thus far has been far too slow at times when dominating teams which can breed frustration. We’re only five league games in however, and this will surely improve and people need to be understanding of that fact - It goes without saying that ‘moaning’ should not be happening at Turf Moor, vocally.
On the subject of Roberts himself, it’s good that he feels utterly at ease with his position/task but (other than Barnes) he is the player I feel looks most unsuitable for what is being asked of him currently. Lowton may be 33 but after his performance at Shrewsbury, he has put pressure on Roberts to exceed what we’ve seen so far.

I think part of the criticism he has been getting is similar to that Taylor has received - people are used to seeing them both playing as orthodox full-backs and pushing forward down the line.
Now they aren't doing that it can get interpreted as them not performing at the same level - but both are doing very different jobs to last season. Roberts has quite a tricky but important role in the new system and I think he has the skill-set to do it well.

Were we now unbeaten and top of the division, i don't think the vast majority of fans would give a flying one what the football was like.

He actually explains, without going into full details, the tactical side of things quite well when asked. Spoke about Roberts having the natural ability to carry out multiple different roles when required.
Archer sounds to me like it’s a case of waiting to see if Villa allow him out, I take it that will be last minute and possibly reliant on them bringing someone in.

I knew about the goalkeeper long before it got on here but I never considered the work permit issue. I just assumed we'd got through that hoop already.

very very valid points. The only thing I would say about Roberts is we don't see the confidence he plays with when he plays for Wales where very often he is superb, hopefully that'll come when he figures the new role out.

Agreed on Archer - the ball is in Villa's court there clearly.
I just hope we aren't placing all our striker eggs in that basket - but judging by how swiftly we have moved on to other targets this window I would think we won't.

Hopefully, I don't know the exact rules but given he's more of a prospect and (i'm assuming at 19) hasn't played much football I figured it might be tricky ? Then again, teams like City fill their academies with foreigners so there must be a way around it.

You should do a series, much like the 'from the archives' articles you release. Not necessarily very recent ones, but maybe from Stan's era on. I think it'd be really interesting, especially for the ones that never really made it into the public domain.

Personally think he’s been fine but is clearly learning this new role - room for improvement.
I've called him a couple of times, for taking the wingers space and dragging defenders towards them, but as you say it's a learning curve, and the only opinion that really matters is VKs. If he's happy, and it seems he is, then so should we.

All good points regarding if we were unbeaten at the top of the league there would be less derision around the passing around at the back. However, surely people are aware that we are transitioning from a manager who was here for years to one that has a very clear and different view of how he wants to play.
Scenes like part of the Blackpool game hand the initiative to the opposition and actually make you lose your home crowd advantage.
Dyche mentioned his first few months were difficult at Burnley because during his transition their were similar noises from the stands at times.
We all have our part to play by staying supportive of the team for at least the first third of the season. Less than 3 home games in and there are jeers when a young keeper gets the ball and is doing what he has been asked to do is totally ridiculous and self defeating in terms of helping the team you support.

Quite often articles done when not in public domain but less so in recent years. Couple of times this year I thought I had an exclusive only for it to come out just before the player signed.

exactly, I doubt there have been many teams in sport that have been successful without the support of the crowd (not taking into account empty stadiums because of covid)

I'm not sure I'm with him on his explanation of play from the back and the comparison of there being no such thing as a half press, so you're in or you're not
I'm not suggesting the team play to two different styles, that's nonsense, so to that extent he's correct, but within the game judgement should be used as to "put you foot through it" vs play out and risk conceding. His absolute of "as long as there is a net positive in a game from goals created by the GK vs goals conceded then we're OK" - I don't buy that, I just don't think it's that black and white

Really impressed with how VK conducts himself in his pressers. He tries to be as honest with his answers as he can be and he is obviously a very very intelligent man. I think the club is in good hands .
