It's no surprise the country's in a pickle when the usual suspects say things like the channel crossings, womens rights etc are minor issues.
I'm shocked Murger
Shocked that you blame the state of the country on channel crossings, and trans people
Shocked I tell you

I'm shocked you think people can't see what's going on for themselves. Whatever doesn't suit your world view gets put down as people reading The mail, listening to Farage etc.
Shocked I tell you.

Of course
You've seen it going on for yourself
Let me guess, you've been doing your own research

The thing that winds me up about the cost of living payment is that people who work, and don’t claim benefits are pushed aside, and people who don’t work and get rent, council tax, gas and electric etc paid for them get it because they somehow need it more! It’s a joke.
Every household, working or not, on benefits or not, gets £400.
The ideal would be that any payment should be means tested so that it targets those who really need it (for example, I don't really need it). However people on benefits have already been means tested so it's easy to target. The issue of course, as I think you are trying to point out, is that many working people aren't well paid or have stretched themselves financially and so will have difficulties.
So we have already seen that people who pay Council Tax got £150 in the spring, or will get it, and every household will get £400 over the course of the winter. Let's see what more help will be forthcoming before getting all riled up.

So I need to be on the south coast to know it's going on?

I suppose my real question is this. Do people who are having their rent, council tax gas and electric paid while claiming UC need a 326 ‘cost of living’ payment more than those that work, try to do the right thing and see their finances stretched to a point where they are struggling to just stand still?

I think you need to have a brain mate
You really think all that is going to happen (and has happened over the past decade) is the fault of *checks notes* trans people and refugees in the channel?

It's hard to keep up with this but it seems that the best way to beat the energy crisis is to burn immigrants and transexuals as fuel. Is that right?

Android sadly (and almost certainly deliberately) derailed the thread I'm afraid

Yes that conclusion could only come from you & 2+2 does equal 5.

Another wannabe mind reader! You have demonstrated your lack of understanding of the subject Lancs, there is no need to add a silly false accusation.
Fact check: It was DA who introduced the topic of culture wars and it was Lancaster Claret who re-introduced it.
And look who seems to be seeking to weaponise trans people again at the top of this page (in response to Murger who did not mention trans people).

There were 5.6 million people on Universal Credit in January 2022:
https://www.gov.uk/government/statistic ... -uc-header
Note how it shot up during the pandemic and hasn't come down.
People on UC can be employed people.
There seem to be 29.7 million employed people, 1.5 million unemployed, and 8.4 million inactive (students, long term sick and others) according to my calculations:
https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlab ... august2022
Do people on UC get their energy bills paid? I don't know.
Of course amongst that 5.6 million on UC there will be people that are playing the system but I suspect most are genuine.

What did I miss - that by "almost certainly" you mean "not"?
Look, Lancs I understand why people are fed up of this now and want to focus on energy. I have explained why I cannot resist calling bs on the issue we have been discussing because it is a subject that is very important to me (mainly the women's rights aspect more so than the more specific stuff we have been discussing which is nevertheless important). You and DA and Greenmile have not accepted my motives and have seemed to claim to know me better than I know myself. Bizarre but so be it. Let's let people have their energy thread back.

I've read that renewable sources of energy charge the same runoous prices as gas sources. How can this be? We were told renewables would be far cheaper. It strikes me that whichever of the civil servants that make these contracts on behalf of the government should change their re- education courses to business studies with particular emphasis on negotiation. Same happened with the Water sell off. Huge profits but no reinvestments in new reservoirs for 31 years. Surely a clause should have been added to the contracts stating that a %age of profits have to be reinvested. And if there were no profits they were out.

I think there needs to a serious discussion and policy decisions (cross party) on our energy needs going forward
One thing is abundantly clear, it is not sensible to rely on energy sources from countries that are willing to use energy supplies as economic blackmail

Which countries that are blackmailing us does the UK rely on?
