Quite a few poor performances. Nothing like the last few matches. How Barnes still gets game time is beyond me. Roberts and Maatsen poor too along with Cork. The ref was hopeless and he needs to be made to watch that again. Wallace very good for them

Why on earth is Roberta using his right foot to clear that cross instead of his left???

I honestly think Vitinho is the best option at left back , quite a few tonight not at the races but that's football we've no devine right to think we'll walk the league. I think it would have been a travesty if we'd have actually come away with all 3 points. Missed opportunities from both teams so a draw is a fair result ..........suck it up n move on .

Re: West Brom v Burnley Match Thread
Very poor all round but Roberts was the worst. Saying that he wasn’t the worst person on the pitch…that honour goes to the officials. How that isn’t a pen I don’t know, that challenge on JBG was a leg breaker and he didn’t even get a free kick and how the f**k did he get 8 minutes!! I was expecting 5 or 6 but how the hell did he get 8
Re: West Brom v Burnley Match Thread
Clearly knackered for most of that 2nd half, couldn't string 2 passes together and we were happy to just see it out and counter with fresh legs; it would have worked if Roberts had cleared a ball away!! A real shame as it's more points dropped but 7 points out of 9 from 3 games in 6 days, can't complain really, can we?

The other positive is we need games like this to grow, you learn far more from games like this than winning 5-1 at Wigan, and there was a lot to learn.
It was a poor performance tonight but we’re still way ahead of where I thought we would be at this stage and still with a load of players to come into the team.
Onwards and upwards.

Re: West Brom v Burnley Match Thread
We were quite fortunate to get a point, they just couldn’t finish. To say we are supposed to be a possession team we gave the ball far too often throughout the match, Cork looked knackered in the second half. Although THB and Taylor played well I still we need more height and power at the back. As the season goes on I’m a little concerned we may not have the physicality across the team to handle a long tough season. Having said I am happy with the point.

To be fair I wouldn’t say they just ‘launched it in the box’ they were incredibly good with the ball and played some nice stuff.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 02, 2022 10:14 pmNah, that's just West Brom being West Brom. They always launch it into the box, that's why they bought Wallace.
If they had a good striker they would be right up there

Don’t know where 8 mins came from and gutted we conceded so late in the game. But a point is a point and as said above we weren’t at our best. I thought WBA played well but we always looked dangerous on the break. This is a young team and it is learning all the time. This may well prove to be a very good point come the end of the season.
UTC and safe journey home.

Impressed with them again tonight like against Watford. Their fans seem to think they turn up against better teams but poor against weaker ones, they are also fuming the board messed up some transfers yesterday.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 02, 2022 10:20 pmTo be fair I wouldn’t say they just ‘launched it in the box’ they were incredibly good with the ball and played some nice stuff.

I wonder if Cork had been rested before the game how many of us would have questioned it because of the huge influence he had against Wigan and Millwall?Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 02, 2022 10:12 pmCalmed down, as others said a point before kick off was a good point.

Can’t believe some of the overreactions, we’ve completely rebuilt the team, changed our style of play. We knew it would take time to gel. We’ve lost one in our first eight games, a better start than many would have thought possible. Ok it stings a bit losing so late on. If as some think we played so badly, we should be happy with the point and move on to the next game.

It's a massive learning curve which we are taking on board, WBA just gave us our stiffest test yet just when we thought we were gelling.
I'm happy with that performance tonight. Some brilliant bits of skill and movement, some poor moments including the ref.
It's a point away from home against a top side. It feels like a defeat but there's more pluses than minus.

Shame we couldn’t finish them off. I thought that despite their dominance, we restricted clear cut chances in the second half.

Don't disagree, I thought he would have rested Jay for the same reason, and Vitinho, although both did well. Considering the size of the squad I'm surprised we haven't made more changes to the starting XI's.
Re: West Brom v Burnley Match Thread
Kompany called it as it was. Sloppy, fatigued and it is a good point. Said WBA were better than us.

Yeah, said some fatigue amongst the players.
Learning exercise I think, he should have rested Cork tonight and perhaps one or two others.

Re: West Brom v Burnley Match Thread
I think it's the manner in which we conceded the equaliser so late on, but I'm actually quite encouraged that we weren't at best tonight, yet still dug out a decent away point, and we were seconds from taking all 3. The reality is if we're to gain promotion we will have to pick results up when not at our best.Bigvince wrote: ↑Fri Sep 02, 2022 10:23 pmCan’t believe some of the overreactions, we’ve completely rebuilt the team, changed our style of play. Of course if we'd held on for the final few seconds some posters would be going OTT in the opposite direction, and claiming we're going to storm to the title.
8 games in and we're showing far better than I expected this early in the season, and we will definitely be in the nix judging by our results and performances thus far.
Re: West Brom v Burnley Match Thread
Agreed. Cork was more wasteful than most. I think he will learn a lot from this, and it came a day or two too soon for our latest signings to feature.SkiptonClaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 02, 2022 10:31 pmYeah, said some fatigue amongst the players.

Re: West Brom v Burnley Match Thread
We didn't play particularly well and unlike some of the other extremely "physical" teams we've already encountered in this division, West Brom can also play a bit, but when it gets to a minute left you really should win the game. Poor from Roberts who was poor all game imo and although the ref was appalling, especially in the second half, we only have ourselves to blame for not taking the chances which came our way to put the game to bed and for not defending the lead better.

Beyer to replace Roberts, anyone? Ball play CB who has played RB. In this new system we play the LB pushes up the wing and the RB always seem to stay back to make a back 3 with Cullen either sitting just in front or more to the left

If West Brom equalise in 60min and we get a point we say it’s a good result, 97 min is a sickner but on another day West Brom win 4-1 and on another day we score a second and get a second pen, they even themselves out through the season

Re: West Brom v Burnley Match Thread
Unfortunately, only Barnes to replace Jay and we all know that ain't an option atm. Hopefully, we can work on a few different tactical setups over the next few weeks in case Jay can't play, for whatever reason, so we have some different options; we have enough forward options it seems!!Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 02, 2022 10:29 pmDon't disagree, I thought he would have rested Jay for the same reason, and Vitinho, although both did well. It was noticeable when Tella was subbed.. we seemed to lose that quick counter attack threat and gave WBA the confidence to push forward.. disappointing to lose the points so late but a decent point over the 90 mins.. surprised how many times we conceded possession so cheaply and in dangerous areas and we looked lethargic but a point's a point.

Lucky to get a point really. Albion had so much passion and energy for the whole 98 minutes. We looked absolutely tired and shattered after 60 mins. A lot of hoofball again….need to cool it down, step on the ball and make passes work. Albion well deserved their point.

Re: West Brom v Burnley Match Thread
WBA deserved a point in the end, but we played probably the worst we have all season and still didn't lose against a supposedly top end team in the league. We were unbelievably lucky not to concede first half, but we did enough close the game out and missed some golden chances. Ref was also desperate to ensure we didn't get the 3 points. I'm a Vintinho fan but if you're playing him, do not play him on the wing. Onto the next and up the sh@gging clarets.

Roberts didn’t have the best game but I think the mistake for the equaliser was because he wasn’t expecting the ball to get to him and was adjusting for it. Keeper comes and goes back and you could probably expect 1 if the CHs to get a head on it

Not sure about this. Churlinov caught them a couple of times on the counter. I think we just dropped very very deep. The concern was the lack of composure when we won the ball in the last ten minutes. We just pumped it anywhere and inevitably it came straight back at us.Woonderbah wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 12:29 amIt was noticeable when Tella was subbed.. we seemed to lose that quick counter attack threat and gave WBA the confidence to push forward.. disappointing to lose the points so late but a decent point over the 90 mins.. surprised how many times we conceded possession so cheaply and in dangerous areas and we looked lethargic but a point's a point.
I think the commentator also mentioned VK showing his frustration at that. We should have tried to move the ball out instead of panicking. Another lesson I think we will learn.

Maatsen is never in this world a defender, he doesn't read the game fast enough to defend, he's always behind the play and trying to chase the winger, his place in the team is in the wing position.
Get the new lad Beyer in at CB and push Taylor out left.
On the game last night I feel we were lucky not to lose that by 2 or 3 but also feel robbed by a draw brought on by crap officials and the unbelievable 8 minutes of extra time, we played bad against one of the better teams we'll face in this league yet still managed a draw away from home, the future looks good this season under Kompany when some of the teething problems are sorted out

It's the last minute equaliser that sickens however if that hadn't happened we would have been papering over the cracks.

Papering over the cracks really, we've lost 1 in 8, including some tricky away games, and presently sit 2nd in the league.
Which given we've effectively changed most of last season's squad, plus have a new manager still adjusting to the demands of the Championship isn't too shabby in my view.
Yes we can certainly improve, and we will, but we're doing slightly better than I expected at this early point in the season.
