Really looking forward to this last ever series of this show tonight,nothing like this on TV anymore,and Martin Clunes is brilliant as the hapless GP..and the Cornwall village of Port Issac is on my Bucket list of places to visit...Wonderfully funny programme

Lovely place is Port Isaac (sorry....Portwenn) - only issue is getting back up the hill to the car after making your way down to the main part of the town! Hell of a steep hill, phew. You can walk up the other side of the town to visit the Doc's house very easily, and walk past Bert's restaurant etc.

Yes - a very weird guilty pleasure of me and my Wife's is Doc Martin. Reminds me of stuff like Heartbeat that I used to watch with my Mum and Dad as a kid, feels very mid-90's.

What's the Rings of Power like? I've read mixed reviews, but I'm wondering how many of those dissing it are LOTR purists? Some people get rather precious (no pun) about it.

No-ones suggesting Clunes is a serious actor...the casts of these things are selected mainly because they can't act. It's a collection of ham actors in a fatuous unfunny rigmarole that folk watch because the scenery is decent and its Sunday evening.

Can't stand it personally....but as I'm currently being dragged around Skopelos by 'er indoors, and being made to gawp mindlessly at locations for some or other brainless film she watched about a dozen years ago, I'd best keep my trap shut.

Yes, the jeeves and wooster role was excellent. I am a particularly fond of the episode with the drones banjo band.

Nice guy apparently, I know someone who was in Cornwall some years ago and was out walking his dog. He got chatting to another dog walker and after a few minutes realised it was Clunes.

Personally I’m really enjoying it. The actors portraying ‘young’ (young in Elvish terms!) Galadriel and Elrond are excellent, it feels very inkeeping with Jackson’s trilogy and clearly has a limitless budget. No issues from me so far, very enjoyable.

Good question by Billy that, think it deserves a thread of it’s own really. I have to wait until October to renew my Prime account, as I can wait a couple of weeks for my 1/2 student discount on annual membership… I’ll be buying lots of books anyway, then.

One question I keep asking myself are fans, fans of the books, films or both.

For film fans I can see why they are struggling… very different feel to the Silmarillion to Lord of the Rings.
In fact the Silmarillion is often dissed by those who think Chris Tolkien did a poor job of transcribing JRR’s notes.

Personally, I think Chris did a fantastic job, when you consider climbing into JRR’s mind was a thankless task; working from years of quick notes that mae the world work for JRR.

Yes, off to Edge Hill in a couple of weeks for 19C studies, and an informal offer for a PhD to follow it at Salford if I want it (when I turned their offer down) which I’m thrilled to get as a starter for ten… can’t wait to get stuck back in, it’s seemed a hell of a long twelve months.

I loved the core books, grew up on them (Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy) but never read any of the supplemental stuff (Silmarillion etc) so had no real context for this series beyond what was alluded to in the original books (and the movies). That should hopefully give some context to my understanding of Middle-Earth and how that has affected my enjoyment of the series etc.

Unsure how people who have really dived into the other bits of the lore (including stuff that this appears to be touching upon so far, I.e, creation of the rings of power, rise of Sauron, Galadriel/Elrond backstory etc) will find it as they’ll have a bit more expectation on it. I’d say if you loved the Jackson adaptations of the original books you’ll absolutely love it.

Jedi, I've just watched the first episode of Rings. All good stuff for a bit of escapism. I'll certainly stick with it. I can't understand why some LOTR fundamentalists get so upset. The books, films, etc are fantasy-fiction, not holy scripture written by Paul the Apostle.

I’ve not started watching it yet but I will. The budget apparently works out at around 14 million dollars an episode and is the most expensive tv series ever made. At the moment I’m trudging through House of the Dragon but it’s only really come to life in the third episode. The first two episodes are a bit hard going.

On topic I have to say I haven’t watched Doc Martin in a long while but I used to enjoy it as a bit of light hearted relief. It’s not fantastic but I can’t say there is anything bad about it. It’s a gentle, mild mannered sort of comedy that just centres around a bad tempered, socially inept doctor who,bizarrely, hates the sight of blood. Not a bad concept, and I like Clunes.
