The Italian Grand Prix has nothing to do with the UK so wouldn't expect them, or any other country to cancel events.claretblue wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 10:02 amfrom BBC Sport website:

That’s how it should be to.
Let individuals make a choice as to whether they are too saddened with grief to attend. That’s what should have happened with sport too.
How can watching somebody hit a golf ball off a tee be disregarded as disrespectful ? Or any more disrespectful than somebody taking there dog for a walk or going fishing ?
One big ego trip for the faceless people making these decisions who are not accountable for explaining the logic behind it.

Re: Game postponed
If it had have gone ahead as planned I would definitely have attended, but equally others may feel differently as is their right of course.
It's a pain especially having made plans weeks in advance involving accommodation and travel, and if the rearranged fixture is a midweek as expected I might not be able to attend that, but there's no point getting too worked up about it, won't change anything will it, so I'm fairly philosophical regarding the postponement, and at least most far flung fans were informed before they set off on their journeys, I do particularly feel for anyone who's travelled from overseas mind you as a couple reportedly have, that must be a bitter pill to swallow having made all that effort to then find the game not happening, not to mention the financial outlay.

Cancelling the Proms is the most ludicrous thing I've heard
It's one of the most patriotic events in the calendar, and the professional musicians could easily have coped if the programme had been adapted a bit in light of events.
It's typical.BBC virtue signalling.
I think it's fair to say our stoical Queen would "not be amused" that such a national event has been cancelled
The National Brass Band Championships are going ahead tomorrow
The Queen was the Patron.

I'm not particularly bothered by the postponement, I can find something else to do on a Friday night if I really wanted to. I don't understand the reasoning, though. What is inherently more respectful about me, instead of going to the football match along with thousands of members of the community, instead spending the night at home watching Cobra Kai?

But I suspect the 20,000 football fans who were going to attend tonight's match will be spending their time doing something equally, if not more trivial. From what I've read on here there doesn't seem to be much whinging, but people questioning the logic of tonight's football match being cancelled when everyone can, for example, just go to the pub. I played football about 2 hours after the news last night, everyone turned up and just got on with it as usual.
The fact of the matter is the EFL was scared of appearing insensitive or disrespectful, and this is virtue signalling and not for the common good. You clearly agree with the decision, but let's not accuse others of whinging because that is equally as childish as calling those who agree with the decision serfs or plebs.
If you don’t agree with cancellations that’s no problem , antipathy for the Queen , also no issue at all . But to claim
Righteous indignation after such an event is just plain silly imo .

Thanks...... Although I can state 100% that no football has ever been cancelled in Lancashire because of policing elsewhere.

I have read that the show will pay its respect by bowing to each other before any contests.
A few will also wear black belts to honour the Queen.
Can’t ask for more than that.

Re: Game postponed
There will be major policing needs throughout London in particular in due course as the former Queen lies in state. Feels very impractical to have major sporting events during this period, and we can’t postpone some fixtures but not others. It’s one of those situations where there is no ideal solution, we just have to roll with it.
p.s. I know 3 points aren’t the biggest consideration right now but I expected NCFC to win tonight, with us still developing as a group. It may be a big bonus to us to defer it to another date.

Re: Game postponed
I completely understand the gravitas of the queen's death, and I'm not downplaying it. I'm also not showing antipathy for the queen, I have the utmost respect for her, despite not agreeing with the monarchical system (which is irrelevant to my view on this point). I just don't see what is achieved by cancelling a football match that is taking place more than 24 hours after her death. Of course I would expect games to be cancelled on the day of her funeral, that is a totally different matter, but what makes cancelling Friday's games and letting Saturday's go ahead respectful?AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 10:56 amWe’re not talking about the passing of an ex player /manager or even a PM , we’re talking about the “ biggest “ death in British and virtually world history of the longest serving monarch in British history and almost since records began in ANY history back to the ancients . I'm using the term 'virtue signalling', because that's exactly what it is. The irony is that this phrase has been bandied about and misused over the last few years, yet the EFL's decision to cancel tonight's game fits the definition to a tee. Banging pans for NHS workers during the Covid pandemic was another example, although these won't sit comfortably with the people who have lazily misused the term in the past.
the action or practice of publicly expressing opinion or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue

Re: Game postponed
I did think about this, and it's another example of how this decision does absolutely nothing to benefit the people. At this time of financial hardship and general malaise relating to a number of societal and economical issues, the decision to cancel a leisure activity programmed for the end of a working week is just nonsensical, and will leave people mentally and financially worse off.daveisaclaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 11:18 amWonder if any consideration was given to stewards, programme sellers, hospitality workers and anyone else who might be relying on getting paid for working tonight? Competitive sport, no.
Competitive grieving, yes.
There could have been a superb coming together and celebration of the Queen at grounds across the country this weekend. Ridiculous decision.

I believe this to be the correct decision.
However, next week's midweek games and next weekend's games should all go ahead. There are no games scheduled for Monday 19 th, which is the likely date for the funeral.

Probably more people obsessed with football than there are obsessed with the queen. Anyway it's not a competition really is it. The vast majority of people will have woken up today and gone "woah, bit mad yesterday with the queen dying" but they'll be carrying on as normal now.
No reason why all the mourners can't mourn and everyone else can crack on.

I'm not speaking for them. I'm saying that most people will be cracking on. The vast majority will have huge respect for the queen and recognise its sad news. But they'll also be at work and getting on with life. There's no bank holiday. The world hasn't stopped. We have the capacity to mourn, be respectful and yet still get on with things at the same time.

Makes us look ridiculous, proper 3rd world dictatorship nonsense. Really poor decision, just from fear of not looking 'respectful' enough. There's no tradition here either, this is very much a modern world phenomenon, never did it for the last monarch.
Probably cancel kid's grassroots too, which is something I'd probably move from 'vexed' to 'furious' about.
