All Matches Off

Post by Hurstwood_Claret » Fri Sep 09, 2022 11:50 am

EFL statement

Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend.

Further information, in respect of how football, Clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty’s reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point.

Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course.

PL Statement
At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.

Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive, said: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.

"As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

"This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation, but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”

Further updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided in due course

It won't be to everyone's satisfaction but in the circumstances the right thing to do.

So thousands of kids, instead of playing football, will now be, er, "mourning" in front of their x boxes

Imagine in years to come.... "Grandad, do you remember when Queen Elizabeth died?" "Yeah, it was ****. We just had to sit around the house because they wouldn't let us do anything else."

OR they remember it more clearly and are able to explain to their own families just how incredible Queen Elizabeth was.

Im pretty sure they can still do a training session if they want to keep active.

Obviously it's not an instruction but it shows how stupid this is.

"You absolutely will not do this thing you enjoy, you will do something else you enjoy instead." Nobody is now going to mourn the queen because they can't play/watch football.

I'm sure that the Royal Family, the Premier League & EFL will be dipping into their pockets to reimburse all the travel and accommodation costs fans have already incurred.

Its not about everyone going somewhere to mourn, it’s about football taking a breath and having a moment of respect (yes a moment, it’s one weekend) for someone who has dedicated their life to the country. Some may choose to mourn, others may not.

I’d probably say because that’s a charity event.

Not sure on other sports but cricket / racing / golf is off today.

At times like this it becomes embarrassing, and depressing, being a Burnley fan. There’s no football for a short period so deal with it. All your manking and moaning won’t change anything, so suck it up and quit whining.

Loss of income? No chance of refunds on expensive train fares etc.?

Easy to say when some people are fairly well off.

It is what it is. Train tickets may well be carried over once a plan has been worked out. Those losing income from the postponed matches will get it back when the games are played. The big picture suggests that showing respect to our longest serving Monarch is more important than a bloody football match.

Football doesn't need a breath, it's not a living thing. Fully in agreement with your last sentence. Fully disagree that we should tell people how they shluld go about either.

They could have played every game with a minutes silence before them this weekend and I would bet that very few people would have seen that as a bad thing. If anything, it would be 100 times more respectful.

Wasn't questioning yours, but if a parents fall back option whenever there is no football is to stick them in front of an xbox then they are a bit s**t

Is that what they do when the season finishes and we have no games for 3 months ? We are missing 1 maybe 2 games which will be replayed at a later date it isn't like we will never play again. I had paid for my train tickets for tonight and was looking forward to a few beers this afternoon before the match, I would also prefer the game to go ahead. I can understand why it isn't and will just do something else with my time instead.

Which is fine

Course, I was on about my kids first grassroots game of the new season which they have all been looking forward to

And, its very hard to reschedule kids games because finding somewhere with lights and getting players, parents and coaches to a midweek rearranged fixture in a league that stretches from Ambleside to Garstang is going to be tough

You know what I mean. Cricket, golf and racing has took a moment too.

I would have supported the weekend games going ahead but I can also completely understand why they aren’t.

Can you imagine the scenes of a one minutes silence at Anfield btw? Only takes that to blow up (good chance, given their history) and the rest of the days more positive scenes are swept aside.

They could have played every game with a minutes silence before them this weekend and I would bet that very few people would have seen that as a bad thing. If anything, it would be 100 times more respectful.
The minute's silence will be at Deepdale on Tuesday, and at Turf Moor on Saturday.

I have to agree, however I feel it's better to try and rise above this pettiness by not giving any opportunity to these people to throw even more disrespect towards our late Queen.

I'm astounded by the selfishness of some of the posters on this message board.

You are ?

When horse racing and cricket were called off, not a mention. Suddenly something happens which changes their plans and the selfishness gushes out. Had we been away to Norwich tomorrow at 3pm and not on TV I wonder just how many of those who are outraged would have been going seen as football seems very high up on the list of importance.

As it is we were at home and on tv so naturally for some nothing should change that.

That’s got nothing to do with why the football has been postponed.

It’s easy to creat a false narrative that those who think this weekend’s football should go ahead are being selfish. Obviously it’s a lot harder to substantiate.

Maybe not, but if I was the PL I’d be concerned about that 100%.

Having the games called off is nonsense enough, but to stop the kids playing too is a joke.

Yep and there's no reason why it couldn't have been tonight at Turf Moor. The nearer to the actual death the better really.
