FA starting to get a lot of grief about the grassroots decision, and rightly so. Too late to go back on it now, but someone should be held to account. We'll have highly paid pros playing all sorts of sports in front of big crowds tomorrow while a whole generation of kids sit at home.

I notice that the government have been making it very clear that these aren't their decisions.
I never said government, but I genuinely fail to understand why kids should miss out on an activity they love.

And how does a parent explain this to a young child when all they want to do is run around and have fun with their mates.

I've been out visiting a local museum so I'm not fully up to speed with the latest news, just needed to get away from all this OTT hysteria, and TBH I've kind of switched off due to the incessant coverage.

Of course I understand it's a major historical event, but there is a real danger of overkill by the media outlets in my view.

The “ unelected official “ ( I’m sure you’re a huge fan of elected ones as well ) was your and many millions Queen ,with a lifetime of pristine service , her tenure and passing is unprecedented. Nobody is forcing you to mourn ,it’s 1 weekend without football . Go out for a few beers / sh@g your bird / work out /see a film /meal /gig/xbox:binge watch /whack off to porn all day , there’s a lot of choice .

As for your “ Brexiteers” bit ?? what on earth has Brexit gotta do with the death of the Queen ?
Was only a few months back she was funnelling money to her nonce son for his legal issues.

It was a simple comparison showing how hypocritical folk are about despising one so called set of unelected officials and loving another one

Yes, I know you didn't mention the government. The point I was making that they have been quick to distance themselves from an unpopular decision.

Tbh, if I was the grassroots guys I'd just have a game anyway. Nothing to stop them having a friendly or training or whatever.

Which of course, yet again, shows how silly this all is.

The FA won't sanction any games, including friendlies which means if they choose to play a game their insurance will be null and void. I'm sure that many will buy ityat their risk.

The royals are traditionally patrons of a number of sports - golf, cricket etc.
Isn’t the wife of the future king the patron of rugby league and rugby union ?

Why have these sports not decided to cancel fixtures this weekend ? They must have discussed the merits of doing this and considered what all their member clubs and participants would want to do.

Yeah, it's just a logistic nightmare now they've cancelled refs, pitches etc. Might go for a kick about but can't really do any more than that. Although I have just found out our local cricket club has one home game left, tomorrow. So if it dries up, that'll be us sorted. In a respectful way, obvs.

Is it the size of the event that's causing things to be cancelled or the fact it's a death?

Do big events normally cause things to be cancelled? Unless they are negative.

It's really not worth getting your knickers in a twist about.
Find something else to do for the night and move on ffs

Precisely I was annoyed at the footy being postponed, but there's plenty of other ways to amuse oneself, I'll likely catch up on some movies for example.

At the end of the day it's only a game, and some would do well to remember that.

Doesn’t matter if it’s 1 or 5 games, a kids game or an adults. People are pointing out why this disagree with it.
To try and make out people are getting wound up is a bit weird.

It’s clear the FA, PL and EFL jumped the gun and got it wrong.

As I alluded to some way back on here, holding a football match at this time is disrespectful, but opening Primark for business as usual isn't. Which I kind of find I have an issue with. Not a massive one, but one.

Training games such as today’s are a part of their regular weekly work routine. The staff were at work today like a lot of people.

Friendly matches are not scheduled on what would be game days at all.

The rest of the sporting fixtures seem to be a go but the footy overlords decided to shaft us to maintain whatever perceived public image they think they have

Indeed they are not but it wasn’t a game day as of last night was it ? So why would they not schedule a couple of perfectly normal behind closed doors training games for today when .. like a lot of people .. all of the playing staff were at work ?

They play these games on a regular basis as part of the normal working week .. what else were they supposed
to do today ?

There is a world of difference between a couple of
private training games at Gawthorpe and a public friendly
on the Turf let alone a League fixture

My comment wasn't aimed at everyone, but there are people on here claiming they are being forced to mourn. That their kids health is being put at risk by missing a Saturday morning kick about. That people have moved here from the other side of the world to watch us play Norwich and that the establishment are using this as an excuse to put plebs in their place.

I'm not sure suggesting some people are wound up is the weirdness, all things considered

Has anyone really suggested any of those things ?

People have suggested that :

People can pay their respects (or mourn) without the need to cancel sport.

They do not understand why kids football games would be cancelled.

Their will be some disruption and financial costs to some fans who had made travel arrangements to get to the Norwich game.

Away from here, many respected journalists, ex footballers and supporter groups think the decision to cancel games was wrong, along with many parents who have to explain to their young children why they can't play football this weekend. At least they can watch cricket tomorrow

It's just state-worship. No pleb is actually in mourning, at least not to the extent they can't carry on with their lives. At that point you begin to ponder the ideological usefulness of yoking a nation of people to the ceremonial elevation of a political institution to the status of the lynchpin holding the wheel together. I say without exaggeration, state-worship (which is what this is at its core) is the tactic of fascist states.

I only protest the fact that a mood is imposed on a nation. This thing which is presented as an unimpeachable reality — "a country in mourning" — it is a fiction. I'm not in mourning, I'm of this country, therefore the whole country is not in mourning, only some people in it. It is a narrative, the utility of which lies in how it legitimises a state institution. From this perspective, a week and a half of national mourning, imposed by the very power (and its enablers in government) whose constitutional importance is signified and reified by this imposition on the rest of the country, is little more than political theatre designed to maintain a status quo. I'm not advocating revolutionary politics; I just want to carry on with my life uninterrupted by the death of a monarch foisted on me by accident of birth. I'm unapologetically petty in all this, because I have dignity.

Lad? 😂

Look, I'm as gutted as most that the game was postponed, but I'm not going to carry on replacing my plans with pointing stuff out to people on here for the rest of the night.

Seems like you’re happy replacing your plans by coming on here and making up weird things that nobody has said. Whatever rocks your boat. Thanks, I’ll be popping that bottle open shortly.

I don't want my lad to miss something he really likes doing, and if its for the selfish reason that I'll only be able to do it for a couple more years, then I'm happy to be called selfish

Covid should have taught us all that you make the most out of life while you can, and that when people go, they don't really want the old sackcloth and ashes routine anymore, they what their lives to be remembered with fun and laughter

Almost everything Damo quoted is misrepresented in his comment made prior to him quoting other posters. To argue my point (I won't argue for anyone else), there's a subtle but important difference between a monarchy binding people to its self-important theatre to sustain its own legitimacy in people's minds, and actively using this to "put plebs in their place". Damo represents what I've said as an accusation of maleficence committed by the establishment, but in actual fact I'm arguing that the establishment is putting on a self-serving performance which we're bound up in. I'm not even remotely surprised Damo is misrepresenting what I've said. He, and some others, contributes to these threads at the tonal level of a twitter spat, where rather than recognise the subtlety and nuance to an argument, his relationship with another person's viewpoint exists as an opportunity to 'destroy' the argument. When points are well argued (which I believe my point to be, even if one disagrees), anyone who engages with an argument at the tonal level of a spat is all too happy to misrepresent an argument and attack it from there, because understanding someone's point isn't what interests them: they care only for 'winning' the argument, in their own head, at least.

Have a day off

Only what was reported in numerous news articles
I'm confused.
So 'funnelling money to' means
Have a day off ?

My post was pretty clear.

Pop that cork mate.
Life is too short to spend it worrying about the monarchy and its role in society

I recognise your username and I've noticed that you seem to respond to quite a lot of posts on this forum by alluding to, or outright accusing the poster of being drunk, to the extent I'm starting to wonder if this is a projection. There's no need for that.

Why do you even post on here? What are you getting out of it, yourself? Your say almost nothing worth reading. There are plenty of posts on here defending the decision to postpone football which are worth reading, even if I can't quite fathom why anyone would think that way. But you just sound like you're spoiling for a fight.

Would you care to quote those posts please?
It certainly wasn't me who suggested it earlier on in the thread.

Why do I post on here? That's a good question actually. The football threads are generally pretty good, but these political threads are generally filled with bile and nonsense.
Your previous posts on this thread fall under those categories by the way. And I'll admit, mine too probably.
What is it that brings you here?

The football supporters association
"We believe football is at its finest when bringing people together at times of huge national significance – be those moments of joy or moments of mourning,” said the FSA in a statement. “Our view, which we shared with the football authorities, is that most supporters would have liked to go to games this weekend and pay their respect to the Queen alongside their fellow fans.

“Not everyone will agree, so there was no perfect decision for the football authorities, but many supporters will feel this was an opportunity missed for football to pay its own special tributes."

I’m sure those that want to pay their respects by watching football can give a rendition of God Save the Queen on Tuesday if they so wish

Whilst filming themselves on a mobile phone and posting it on social media. Or you could pay your respects privately.

I'll see your Anfield, and raise you Celtic Park, now whether that should have any bearing on the decision to can the whole fixture card is another matter, but I'd like to think that wasn't even a consideration when they made this call.

The same fans who sing Walkers in a box will be along shortly to say how outraged they are

It shouldn't effect the decision at all because it's highly likely these clubs will sing the song for months if not years anyway
