Sadly, they don’t. It’s yet another example of the me me me rat-race society has become; “how dare anyone stop me enjoying 90mins on a Friday evening, it’s disgraceful”. Such people have no sense of occasion outside of a football ground and, to a certain point, I pity them and, more especially, their kids.

I was replying to a poster who called it "seismic" disagreeing with that particular adjective. Then I explained why. It doesn't really matter, but use of such hyperbole, which is very common these days maybe skews people's judgements of what is or isn't proportionate.
Re: All Matches Off
You're a clarets fan that I'm having a polite debate with so I classed you as a friend. Happy for that not to be the case non-friend.BennyD wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 2:41 pmTbh, I’m not your friend because, according to you, I don’t know you. To me, what your personal views are is irrelevant. I couldn’t care less that, to you, it’s an irrelevant event. The least you can do, if you can’t/don’t want to show respect, is go about your business quietly rather than banging a drum/debating your republican views during the period of national mourning. Sadly, this smacks of Brexit where the silent majority has to endure the howled anguish of the vocal minority. As my dear old Mum used to say, if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
Why should I be quiet about something I disagree with if I'm doing it respectfully?
Your mum's advice whilst a nice soundbite, does somewhat prevent constructive discussion. You have nothing nice to say about me - my views are irrelevant and you couldn't care less apparently, but you're still kindly informing me of that fact. And that's fine - if you don't have anything nice to say, still say it then I can see exactly where you're coming from

Out of interest if we rejoined the EU tomorrow, which of your Brexit benefits would you most miss? Would it be the blue passport or the small crown etched on the bottom of your pint glass? Or maybe something else entirely that has slipped my mind. Do let me know non-friend

I think seismic meaning ‘huge’ is a reasonable word to be honest.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 2:47 pmI was replying to a poster who called it "seismic" disagreeing with that particular adjective. It's a big event, no doubt about it. But it was yesterday and its done with until the funeral. In between, we're all at work, life is still going on. There was no good reason to cancel all football this weekend. Anyway, they have, c'est la vie. Plenty of other cool stuff to do.

Re: All Matches Off
Why can’t you be quiet about something you don’t agree with? Is it the sense of entitlement you feel you have when the majority do something you don’t see the point of? If football was allowed, would this discussion be taking place? Would the Royalists/those n favour of the Royal family be bellyaching about sport being allowed? Almost certainly not. Btw, sound bite sounds a bit ‘Blairish’ which, therefore, considerably undermines the point you are trying to make. Fyi, the thing I would miss most would be the independence from the piggery in Brussels and Strasbourg. Anyway, I’ve had enough conversation with you today so I’ll bid you a good weekend. Enjoy.

P.S. would genuinely love to unpick what that piggery actually means. It runs the risk of sounding like one of those pesky soundbites from the Mail or Express. Oink!

Re: All Matches Off
It's not "irrelevant" but to say it's "seismic" is somewhat ridiculous when we all realise the monarch's position is pretty much a symbolic one with little to no actual indfluence on our daily lives. I think the Queen did an excellent and honourable job but completely fail to see the point of cancelling , fairly randomly, some parts of our national life in order to somehow "pay respect". As it is I'll just stay in, or maybe nip down the pub, tonight feeling irritated that the match I was looking forward to has been cancelled whereas if I was on the Turf I could join in the collective expression of a minutes silence.BennyD wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 2:41 pmTbh, I’m not your friend because, according to you, I don’t know you. That's all we're discussing here ...whether cancelling games is appropriate or necessary and it's a perfectly valid viewpoint to oppose the decision particularly when other sports (Both codes of rugby for example) are carrying on.
As for your "silent majority" comment regarding Brexit that's utterly ludicrous as the (slender and almost certainly now non-existent) majority were anything but silent with their rantings about Brussels, immigrants and the benefits to the NHS.

That was an answer to a question. So, if you are going to have a pop, please keep it in context. Thanks.
Re: All Matches Off
I think that as other sports are resuming after a pause - golf/racing etc, then It's likely that football will resume after the weekend too? So i would envisage midweek games will go ahead and thereafter except any that clash with the date of the funeral when that is announced.

Apologies. It was never my intention to drag a rabid remainer into the discussion. This is not the time nor place to hack back into that particular open sore. I was making a point not starting a debate within a debate. Apologies again. Have a lovely weekend.

Surely it is a seismic event, how many other events would have caused football to shut down?TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 2:47 pmI was replying to a poster who called it "seismic" disagreeing with that particular adjective. I'm off to the pub tonight. I hope that doesn't offend anyone. I do have a "sense of occasion", whatever that might mean but have no interest in the nonsensical virtue signalling/cancelling mentality that seems to have taken hold. I feared it might.BennyD wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 2:46 pmSadly, they don’t. I presume you think people who are going to watch other sports this weekend are being selfish if you think football supporters are?BennyD wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 2:46 pmSadly, they don’t. Re: All Matches Off
The sequence of events to follow the death of the Monarch have been long in the planning with the codename "Operation London Bridge". It is being widely reported that the funeral will take place on Monday 19 September, although seemingly no decision as to whether a Bank Holiday will be declared. Judging by the large numbers of people that descended upon London for the funerals of The Queen Mother and Princess Diana the size of the crowds could be seismic regardless of the event. The vast majority of people will not have witnessed the funeral of the reigning Monarch in their lifetime and vast numbers of visitors from overseas and the Commonwealth are expected to attend. If Monday is the confirmed date then, hopefully, the football fixtures next weekend will go ahead, although games in and around London could be at risk of cancellation due to crowd numbers and policing issues etc.

Have read some of posts on here, can`t be bothered ploughing through them all
Just one serious and simplistic question
It would appear every other sport is carrying moreorless on as usual ie
Cricket
Rugby union
Rugby league
Golf
Horse racing
etc
Why is footy, starting with our game tonight, NOT being played?

An obvious answer, the obvious reply then is why have the governing body decided to postpone matches when it appears to be ONLY football and no other sport or industry is affected??Middle-agedClaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 6:55 pmBecause the governing body of the game has decided to postpone matches.

one day of the test - the football authorities have cancelled one game day yes or no ? The two games
today were part of Saturday’s game day yes or no ?
As an aside if you’re that disturbed by it why not ask the authorities who have made the decision ?

If there was any sport I would have a degree of sympathy for cancelling events as a mark of respect it would be horse racing.
The Queen was extremely close to many owners, trainers and jockeys for several decades and her extremely detailed knowledge of horse racing is well known in the sport.
At the other extreme she cared and knew very little about football…..as have very few of the Royal Family down the years (William being the exception and one of the only royals I can remember who has shown any interest in the game)

Re: All Matches Off
A few positives from all the games being canned this weekend.
1) Everyone is being treated fairly, so no prospect of a fixture backlog for any club, as happened to us in particular last season due to the sheer number of postponements.
2) We'll remain in the PO zone for a few more days at least.
3) Gives VK more time to integrate the squad, plus Twine time to get up to speed with some bounce games, before he plays in the u23's to build up his match fitness.
4) It is still the cricket season, so if you are at a loose end you can at least go and watch that, or listen to TMS is I'll probably be doing.
5) And lastly we'll also stay above Rovers for a few days minimum.
Small mercies I know.
