First half, I agree with Kompany that we could have put the game to bed, Vitinho had a great chance that I think Maatsen would have buried. Benson shot over the bar when he could have rolled it to Jay Rod who was in a glorious position.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 14, 2022 7:40 amDominated - We dominated possession but never really looked like winning.
Yes a very poor Preston team, they will be in the bottom half this season as all they can do is defend.
Lucky to be in the top 10 is probably a little extreme but it’s not exactly out there. Who knows where we could finish, the championship is shocking this year. We could very well finish top 6 or bottom half depending on a few factors.
It’s about expectations though RV not every fan is happy with a transitional year and to be fair he has a right to be disappointed. Without the numerous happy clappers jumping down his throat because he said something remotely negative.
Look at KRBFCs post, what exactly did he get wrong on there for the usual suspects to start jumping on it.
I don’t see how you can say a team that’s only conceded once in 8 (before our game) is very poor. They were just outside the play offs. I don’t know where they will finish as it’s a long way to go.
KR’s comment that Sheff Utd are running away with it seems a bit silly when they are only 5 points clear of 3rd with 37 games left. Again, there’s a lot of hyperbole used by certain posters, you are the master of it (such as saying Watford are levels above us a few weeks ago, when now they actually look significantly worse, last night they had fans arguing with their players and booing the team off).

It’s difficult to argue with KRBFC on that point. There is a clear gap at the top of the table, there is no other gap like that other than right at the bottom of the table. They have won the most games, lost the least amount of games, scored the most goals, conceded the second least. On paper Sheffield are starting to run away with it.

There is a clear 4 point gap at the top after 9 games.
They are running away with it. If they continue like that for the season they will have a 20 point gap on 2nd place.

Nobody is running away with any league with only a 4 point gap after only 9 games.
Re: Rubbish
They are a good team who will undoubtedly be top 4, I actually had them top 2 before the season started so it’s no surprise. But even still, a 4 point gap with 111 points to play for is not running away with it.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 14, 2022 7:59 amThere is a clear 4 point gap at the top after 9 games.

2. After tonight, when everyone is on 9 games, the gap could quite easily 1 point between 1st and 2nd. And 2 points between 1st and 3rd.

Posting a thread titled ‘rubbish’ where we dominated the game but were left frustrated is not ‘fairly reasonable’, it’s sensationalist nonsense and being called out as such.

Re: Rubbish
It's not rubbish obviously some of the football has been as good as I've seen on Turf for years but we have played 6 teams in the bottom half of the division and are greatly reliant on Cork and Jay Rod.
Wigan is the only really impressive result we have achieved - everyone is beating Huddersfield and Millwall are a meh side. And we haven't played anyone in the top 6.
Bristol City will be a good test.

The worrying thing for me is we’re struggling to break down any side that is defensively well organised.
No complaints from me though as we’re only a few games into a three year project.

Re: Rubbish
Disagree entirely with the OP. Frustrating yes but rubbish far from it. It was quite obvious that the team hasn't gelled yet and this was a perfect example of talented players not entirely sure of their team mates intentions. I was very pleased with the late introduction of Maatsen and Zaroury on the left, who seemed to be on one anothers wavelength and opened up Preston on a couple of occasions. Patience is required.

I'm happy enough with what we're doing, we're going to be a mid-table side for a while so might as well enjoy it. A few of the new lads look decent, if not spectacular and the new style has a certain novelty value.
Although I did say earlier in the season - and again in that second half - you do get moments of doubt where you think 'is this a case of the Emperor's new clothes' because if I didn't know better, I'd think this was really boring.

Re: Rubbish
That's the problem many of our supporters simply expected us to romp back to the PL, so despite having enjoyed a decent enough start it's deemed not good enough by those who thought we'd do a Fulham.
It seems to have completely sailed over some posters heads that we've embarked on a total squad overhaul, and also are learning a completely different style to what we mainly employed during Dyche's tenure.
As for Sheff Utd running away with the league, it's 9 games into a 46 game season, and the Championship is a marathon not a sprint, worth reminding some folks West Brom were flying high at the top of the table at this stage last season, and they didn't even threaten the play-off's come the business end of the campaign.

I am in the camp that I think we are looking at a playoff - 10th position finish this season. We will play some good stuff but lacking quality in key areas.

Even if we were going to "do a Fulham", at this stage last season Fulham had 17 points (3 more than us) and were 4th. Fingers crossed, gentlemen, the season may not be over yet!

If Sheffield United draw at Preston on Saturday, while Norwich win their two home games, Sheffield United wouldn't be top. Would that mean they were still running away with it but from second place?

Surely that is progress, you have had us down for a relegation scrap, then bottom half of the table (despite not wanting to have a bet), then mid table to now 6th - 10th. Few more games you might just have just in the top 2. How are Hull getting on they are one of the sides who will be right up there too aren't they ?

In one or twos eyes on here yes of course they will
Re: Rubbish
Its a new team and they have to learn how to play with each other in the managers preferred sysytem. It will take some time. Some of the new players - Twine for example - haven't even played yet. What this season, so far, has shown to me is that the the gap between this division and the EPL is ENORMOUS. I would fear for this team if we were to get promoted, particularly given the number of loanees and that better players are old stagers with Premier league experience. Referring to the latter point its why I can't understand why Lowton is not playing.

Re: Rubbish
Most rational posters have identified that we have failed to sign a dominant centre half and a poacher type striker.
This deficiency shows in our vulnerability at corners and set pieces, plus our inability to convert chances.
I think Vince has too many choices and towards the end of October we will see a settled side that deal with the physicality of the other teams in the league

I agree a dominant CB and goal poacher short at the moment.
Re: Rubbish
We've scored 15 goals from 14.5 xG. Our problem isn't converting chances, it's creating them - a poacher type striker wouldn't have solved that as there has to be something for them to get on the end of.brexit wrote: ↑Wed Sep 14, 2022 9:35 amMost rational posters have identified that we have failed to sign a dominant centre half and a poacher type striker.

For me, our issue is poor selection of final ball. You look at how City, for example, scored their goals against us when we played a low block it was often cutbacks from inside the box, along the ground. We got into those positions a few times last night and played the ball off the ground which is both harder to convert and easier for the goalkeeper to deal with. That we're getting into those positions is good as that's more than half the battle, we just have to hope with time on the training ground we can start making better choices with the final ball and runs/positioning in the box.
Re: Rubbish
Completely agree. Maatsen, as bright as he was when he came on, particularly at attacking spaces in behind, wasted a few decent opportunities late on with chipped balls into the keeper. If he whips them in hard and low they are much more difficult to defend.Mattster wrote: ↑Wed Sep 14, 2022 9:53 amWe've scored 15 goals from 14.5 xG. Brownhill could have scored 4 goals himself that night - he hit the bar and their keeper had a great game.
Watford had one shot on target all night and scored from it.
Your default position is negativity which you are of course entitled to. But if you are going to pick out individual games to try and prove your point at least try and pick one where we were second best - like West Brom.
And maybe don’t make yourself look even sillier by saying that a team who we were were at the very minimum equal to on the night and who currently sit below us in the table look “levels” (not just one level) above us.

No way were we rubbish. This is a new team with quite a few young players who are experiencing Championship football for the first time. A local derby where we looked to be more positive than the home team and yes, at times it was a bit frustrating as there seemed to be no urgency. The team is still in its infancy and Preston are a stubborn team - it’s a long season and we will have better days. Keep the faith !

Re: Rubbish
2 points off second despite dropping lots of easy points.
1 defeat in 9 - keep that up and we would loose 5 all season (same as when we won it)
We’ve played 2 of last seasons play off teams, a local derby away, title favourites favourites away.
Still think we either need a goalscoring CF or a Uber creative 10. For all the possession we had second half, I thought they looked more dangerous in the 3 times they went in our box.
Ultimately we just need to stop conceding crap goals, that will come.
Thought the football yesterday was a joy to watch at times, I’m happy not going up if we get to watch that every week to be honest.
Strong foundations, a firm identity, it’s easy on the eye, exciting players - roll on Saturday.

Re: Rubbish
Now come on RV Watford are a mere 32 points behind us, they might still catch us yet,

This is why I try and take a balanced viewpoint whether we win, lose, or draw. and most of the meltdowns came from those annoying draws in the early days of Vinny's reign, but even though it was irksome we still only lost once, funnily enough at Watford, however we battered them 2nd half that night, and it was only some bad luck and Foster having a blinder that prevented us from running out comfortable winners.
It's worth recalling that this is Kompany's 1st season managing in England, and he'd overseen a large overhaul in personnel, it was never going to click from day 1, and those calling for patience and seeing what he was building were ultimately bang on the money.
