The National Anthem -were you singing
Thought the minutes silence was impeccable and the “ new” anthem sung with gusto ( ok the CF were about 5 secs inexplicably ahead ) While god save the King doesn’t yet have the patriotic fervour of GSTQ ,it was for me ( and the club ) a superb powerful and classy gesture to HMQEII.

Spine tingling. There’s a lot of generations on this board but I doubt any of us will see a moment like that again.

Re: The National Anthem -were you singing
As an atheist, am I supposed to sing the national anthem? I don't think god exists, so why am I singing about god saving someone? Not a very inclusive anthem.

I didn’t. Not that I’ve got anything against anyone who did but I just don’t agree with it. Obviously joined in the silence though.

The guy singing it clearly got mixed up halfway through as he sang “ send HER victorious “. Practice, practice, practice.

Would you sing bat out of hell? Angels ? Heaven knows I'm miserable now, Spirit in the Sky, knocking on heavens door etc etc ?
It's the symbolism of the anthem.

Likewise stood in silent respect. Not a great fan of the sort of jingoistic stuff Biily Bragg once termed "John Bull-S**t" but was happy to show respect for the late Queen. Found it mildly amusing when the singer did a last minute swerve and sang "Send Her..m Victorious"

Once again the grammarists are out.But in this case, criticising my use of practice, is clearly incorrect.

Re: The National Anthem -were you singing
Nope
Stood in silent respect and thought of loved ones.
Never sang the national anthem in my life and whilst I am not a great fan of jingoistic stuff and some of the things the British flag represents when it comes to this particularly occasion and mourning the loss of The Queen and everything she has done I can fully understand why a lot of people would want to sing the anthem.

I think it is absolutely absurd to stand in a football stadium singing ritualistic songs and engaging in jingoistic support of a socio-geographic concept constructed by boundaries on a map.
Doh......!

I sang the National Anthem gustily as did my choir when we were practising at choir practice last Wednesday.Claretitus wrote: ↑Sat Sep 17, 2022 8:24 pmThe guy singing it clearly got mixed up halfway through as he sang “ send HER victorious “. Practice, practice, practice.
However, I also made the same mistake as the singer re. HER instead of HIM !!

Re: The National Anthem -were you singing
Yes I was singing. Mrs FF chose not to sing, as she isn’t a royalist. Each to their own. The CFS seemed to struggle with the slower pace of the song though

Re: The National Anthem -were you singing
As I’m a republican and an atheist, I didn’t sing it and never will.

Minutes silence followed by National Anthem followed by minutes applause on 70 minutes. Way too much imo.

Hopefully the club issue banning orders for the fans who decided to persistently stand for the duration of the minute’s applause.

I now have mixed feelings re the national anthem. Not being English, for the most part it is still a symbol of historical oppression, but as the King is a Claret, his being victorious in that context is laudable.
