Spiders beware
Spiders beware
Spiders get thee hence unto the wilderness ...
Walked up for my paper this morning and was getting showered by these bad boys dropping from our village "Horse Chestnut Tree"
The wifes been after some to replace the dried out old ones around the house to disperse the Spider population.

Re: Spiders beware
Is that an old wifes tale or are spiders afraid of conkers? I remember hearing something years ago but dismissed it as nonsenseBosscat wrote: ↑Thu Oct 06, 2022 9:48 amSpiders get thee hence unto the wilderness ...

Depends where you live, in some parts of the town spiders have been known to throw conkers at other spidersBurnley1989 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 06, 2022 9:51 amIs that an old wifes tale or are spiders afraid of conkers? I remember hearing something years ago but dismissed it as nonsense![]()

The wife reckons it does ... Put a few in the corners of each room and rarely see spiders.
And if they don't can challenge the Grand-kids to a Conker Fight this Christmas

Re: Spiders beware
You'd think a spider would be really good at conkers.
Re: Spiders beware
Blimey, how big are your spiders to be able to challenge your Grand kids to a game of conkers??!

Re: Spiders beware
I don’t have a problem with spiders, BC. They catch the flies. What you really need is a cat repellent.
But, if you need more conkers, I have a tree that yields multitudes. You’re welcome to have as many as you can find.

Re: Spiders beware
But spiders don't catch the flies when you want flies catching. I'd be happy with spiders if they were like little SAS Commando types that descended from the light fittings to catch an annoying blue bottle mid flight, but they don't. They lay traps and play the long game.
When its summer and sunny and the back doors open thats when I want my spider allies to attack, not lure a dozy, lumbering fly that's been headbutting my window all day into its little web and proclaim that a victory.

Re: Spiders beware
I saw loads of conkers on the ground while out walking in a wooded area the other day. I haven't a clue where they have come from. I was going to pick some up and take them home for deterring spiders, but I reckon the ones that people sell on eBay are better. So I bought some.

Re: Spiders beware
Everything is better on Ebay the stuff on Depop and Vinted is useless.
Re: Spiders beware
My wife does exactly the same thing BC with the conkers, she only mentioned yesterday we need to go on that walk down where we usually find them falling from the trees. Sounds like my Saturday is taken care of.

Re: Spiders beware
I quit work a while ago and this is one of the ways I’m earning a living now.
Conkers are selling well and a bargain at £9.59 for 50. They’re said to be utterly lethal to spiders so if you want to keep out the creepy crawlies click the link below:

Re: Spiders beware
I would need a tree full. I have just moved into the middle of nowhere and have never seen as many spiders. I get rid of the webs and they are back within 2 minutes. I even found one between the settee and the wall. Winter will be fun when they all decide to move inside.
Re: Spiders beware
Just to add. The wife (found this on a well known site on the web) bought a small bottle of peppermint oil (Tesco’s) put half into a sprayer mixed with around a half litre of water then sprayed round the skirting boards, door frame, windows etc. We’ll see.

Re: Spiders beware
Beddie- I had a few little spiders knocking around the rooms so tried that peppermint spray hack a couple of week ago. I now share the rooms with much larger spiders ( 2 inch) who, just come out and sit in the middle of the carpet staring at me with their 8 eyes.

Re: Spiders beware
I shot one in my living room last winter with a. 177 air rifle.. Only managed to wing him and made a big splinter in the skirting board.
Fortunately the cat was then able to nail him and enjoyed the snack.
