I've always liked Roberts, but Vitinhio on current form does seem to be an upgrade.

Not being on the bench suggests to me Roberts was injured.

IMO his not “feeling too good” was a convenient way of avoiding playing against his home town ( a lifelong supporter I’m told).

He is a diehard Swansea fan but I highly doubt a professional would ever do something like that.

You wouldnt think he'd do anything to risk his place in the team with the World Cup so close...

Our style of play seems to have changed since the Coventry game.

Brownhill seems more on the left, Cullen more on the right, Tella on the right instead of left or central left, and of course Vitinho instead of Roberts.

Overall Roberts has been OKish but not in the same mold as our new players. I don't see him back in the team.

I'm also not convinced Brownhill has the quality to stay in the side if there are better alternatives. Yes he has energy but his abilities seem limited.

Cullen was at right back instead of left back, allowing Vitinho to bomb forward. Not sure why Roberts wasn't afforded the same luxury, maybe Roberts is deemed less threatening further forward than Maatsen.

I agree, and has been said by many, Roberts has never been the player we expected.

His crossing from deep has been one of the main disappointments, that’s a strong point of Lowton , but he rarely sets up his body position in a way to get a good cross from there. I would imagine Matt would be preferred if he had more future transfer potential and on a longer contract.

Roberts is 6 out of 10 for everything for me. Lawton and Vertinho are better

Let's hope his stock rises in the world cup and we can move him on...

Noticeable on Wednesday that Cullen was dropping into the right back slot a lot when we were in possession.

First half we played the much anticipated 4-2-2-2 that VK used last season at Anderlecht. Tella and Jay Rod were playing together up top, Cullen (as you say) dropped into RCB in the build up and this pushed Roberts higher and wider (looked more comfortable). Brownhill played in the right half space. Second half it changed though with Tella playing wider again.

He’s bobbins, and I wish he wasn’t at this club.

So many of our goals we concede are because of him and his poor positioning or a poorly executed skill

He’s not in our first choice eleven, he will be dropped again when Beyer/Maatsen are fit.

He’s fine as backup, but absolutely no more than that.

There’s some posters who seem to be incapable of seeing the fault in anything he does. His header for the second was woeful.

Not a chance. It's down to the defenders.
Incidentally, and regardless of any defensive issues, Roberts was instrumental in Benson's goal.

His header wasn't the best but the goal should still have been prevented after that. Roberts played a vital role in the equaliser. He spent ages shouting for the ball in space and when it finally came, he quickly got it wide to Benson and ran into the area for the cross. It was his attempted header that fooled the keeper.

He's a sound player is Roberts.

This. All day long. That ball comes anywhere near the six yard box and it’s the keepers ball to catch unchallenged. Sometimes, you just need the keeper to step up and take control. When it’s in an empty six yard box, I’d DEMAND my keeper takes control. Muric treats that football like it’s radioactive at times.

I like him but appreciate he is not the finished product. No one on here can convince me that Maatsen and Vitinho are better defenders than Roberts . He does not shirk a challenge. Vitinho has greater skills but will never win a 50-50.The only consistent defender we have is THB who for me produces an 8 out of 10 on nearly all game, sometimes more.Beyer looks good but has only played a handful of games. WE need to get off Roberts's back. After all he is going to the World Cup in a few weeks and there is a reason he is there

He is a serviceable championship right back..but to suggest he is anything more is as bad as all the criticism he gets...

We could go Matsen / Vertino or Taylor / Vertino or even Lowton with Matsen / Vertinho / Taylor at LB before there is any need to play CR...

I say he is 1 of 4 remaining sellable assets we have left...I said last week hope he has a good World Cup and goes ..

6yard box but the far corner of it, possibly a bit further away. keeper doesn't go there in a crowd of players. The defenders should see it safe.

Vitinho is fine defensively at his actual position - right back.

Did some exceptional defensive work to keep us in the game away at Coventry

The problem for me is the system, not Roberts.

When teams break on us and we have 3 at the back, Taylor goes to the man on the ball, THB covers the near post, and Roberts covers the middle of the goal. We have no one, at the back post. Roberts was up against 3 for their second goal, and they had the jump on him because he was back pedalling.
The first was the same, THB went missing instead of the full back, and we end up with a scenario of nobody covering the back post, really poor.
I said after Brum, we have talented players, but they have a lot to learn. We need a leader at the back who organises the defence, points out the dangers, and barks instructions to his teammates.

But neither player was putting him under pressure for the header. It was weak, and it should be much better when he’s not being challenged for it. He’s cost us at least 3 goals this season - he’s simply not good enough.

Regardless of whether the header was good or bad the point was he headed it. He shouldn’t have to but the keeper was static and the 2 central defenders had gone awol, so despite back pedalling he managed to get something on it - good solid defending.

If you need to find someone to blame for the goal - look elsewhere.

I cannot believe people are criticising roberts for that 2nd goal. Completely ignoring the non entity of the ‘challenge’ by THB, Vitinho nowhere to be seen for the cross, THB taking up the LCB role instead of Taylor and the lack of closing down for the shot to the goal.

I think we need a league table:
2 points for the guilty party every time we concede,
1 point back for a goal assist to us,
2 for a goal scorer.

I am sure some posters will be able to fill it in retrospectively

Regardless of whether the header was good or bad the point was he headed it. He shouldn’t have to but the keeper was static and the 2 central defenders had gone awol, so despite back pedalling he managed to get something on it - good solid defending.

If you need to find someone to blame for the goal - look elsewhere.
Good solid defending? You set the bar very low.

I'd expect kids to make a better effort at that header and most would.

I'd apportion blame equally between him, JBG and Muric tbh.
